One of the greatest silent film actors - I love to watch Lon Cheney's films simply because he's a master at portraying emotion. You feel every single thing he's going through. A true actor and truly a master in his character portrayal no matter what he's doing.
Lon Chaney s heart wrenching in this role. His subtle wringing water out of his clothing while shivering from exposure, brings the callousness of the towns people into sharp comparison.
The minister looks like Robert Palmer. Another great Lon Chaney Sr. He doesn't play the bad twisted psychotic bad guy in this who reaches his best senses in the end. Boris Karloff said Lon Chaney Sr told him to make every character uniquely his own. Some thing Karloff took to heart. Thank for the upload!
I'm on a huge Lon Chaney Sr. kick. I can't get enough of this fantastic actor, and I wish that there were more of his films restored, scored, and available on Bluray. My favorites, so far, are West of Zanzibar, and The Phantom of the Opera (BFI Bluray version).
oh thank you for upload this movie really got me into Lon Chaney after seeing that TCM documentary on him I do remember watching this movie on PBS station here in LA
the Chinese gentleman was a loyal friend to the minister, and the minister never acknowledged this. you got the sense this story was about the minister and nate snow's angst, and the Chinaman was largely invisible
If it weren't for Lon Chaney, SHADOWS would not be as revered as it is. The plot is contrived, and IS NOT RACIST no matter what all the copycat reviewers have said. However, the title cards are rather racist in their attempt at "Chinese-speak." Rather, this film is more RELIGIONIST in the view that the Christians take against Lon's character of Yen Sin, who has his own beliefs, though these are not really discussed. The heroine comes off second best, with (the original) Harrison Ford next, though the plot does constrain the actors' abilities to shine. Certainly a well-intentioned film, but not emotional enough to evoke greatness. However, compared to most silents, including Chaney's, SHADOWS is important for what it attempted to portray.
+joeblowthehot yeah I remember a story on TCM documentary by Michael F Blake he interview a guy that saw the makeup being put on Lon did all the makeup job for himself and other actors

Really good film, very touching. Lon Chaney really knows how to make a person relate to every role he has every played. Very emotional 💔.
