When they read the names of locals that were Vietnam dead, no one really cared about his name being read. Then she was crying under the stands. This version and the original by the Chicks are both great.
One of my favorite songs by the great Bruce Robison.
saw an ad recently saying Cody's playing in my town next May. way i understand it, his name was listed as one of the dead, then he does the twist in meaning like a lot of country songs, when he sings "solderi's coming home this time he means his body is coming home, like in a coffin
As others pointed out the (formerly Dixie) Chicks made this song famous, but my favorite version of this great song is actually songwriter Bruce Robison's. Bruce is certainly not as technically gifted a singer as Cody or Natalie Maines, but his version has a rawness quality that makes it striking in my opinion.
I also like the Chicks' hit version, which is, in fact, probably my favorite track from their catalogue. It was actually a performance of this song which sparked the infamous controversy that had them fall out with country radio.
As far as I'm concerned "Travelin' soldier" stands next to Glen Campbell's classic "Galveston" among great country songs about war.

My understanding of the song is that he died but he sent a letter saying he was about to be sent home...and she received it afterwards. That's how I always interpreted the ending

Thank you Jacob for this great version of this song.Cody certainly did it justice. It was written and originally recorded by American country music artist Bruce Robison in 1996 and again, in rewritten form, in 1999. It was later recorded by Ty England on his 1999 album, Highways & Dance Halls. The first rendition to be issued as a single was by Dixie Chicks in December 2002, from their album Home. In their version there's no doubt about it - the soldier's name is on the list that is read out. But only the girl, who is there, recognizes his name. She mourns for him as stated in the line "One name read and nobody really cared but a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair." Thanks Don for the insightful reaction!

This used to be the one song from The Dixie Chicks I still allowed in my playlist. Luckily though, Aaron Lewis cut it on one of his Country albums. It's well done and features a female singer, but it's also updated for a soldier stationed in Afghanistan rather than Vietnam. So now The Dixie Chicks are completely banned from my playlist.
And yes, I know they changed their name, but I don't give a damn. I refuse to be forced to follow along with people's idiocy. They were the Dixie Chicks when they were popular, and when they cut this song. I also still refer to Lady Antebellum as such, and will always refer to the Washington Redskins as The Redskins. And don't even try to get me to care about pronouns.
I normally prefer male singers, but I have to admit I prefer the Chicks version of this better... but it could just be I'm preconditioned to it.
