      I learned them as BRAVE and Semi BRAVE instead of Semi Breave or BREVE and Minim (the rest all the same), but in MIDI programming I use the American ways as they are more related with direct quantize value. Thank you for the learning.

      @@MusicMattersGB Thank you! I`m looking forward to learn a lot. Although i read, "knowledge destroys love" by J. Krishnamuri. In the sense of, you observe a tree and when you give the tree a name, the thought of the name disturbs the moment you observe the tree. while you listening to any kind of music, do you think all the time "oh there he did this and there he left this." ? Or do you enjoy the music without thinking ? Let the music work your brain.

    Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge with us, Mr. You're brilliant, sir. I was inspired by "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saëns", and therefore I want to take violin classes in near future (I am 20 by the way, I don't think to become professional, but for just getting new hobby and getting into music world, I want to learn playing violin). Therefore, I thought to start with basic music theory before commence to attend in violin class.(Because I don't have any musical background, I just want to create idea on my brain about "What is the music? "). And to conclude, I would say, your videos are so instructive and helpful to me. Thanks again and again.

    Another way to read the Semibreve and minim rests: Think of them being two boxes you can stack atop each other, but you can only see the highest in the stack.

    The way I learned to distinguish whole rests from half rests is that the whole rest is full, got heavy, and then fell off the line to hang.

  • @awallace630
    @awallace630 2 года назад

    the way I have always remembered which is the semibreve rest and which is the minim is to imagine the stave as a water line and to think that the 'heavier' 4 beat brick would be below the water line, and the 'lighter' 2 beat brick would float on the surface of the water. got to remember that they are on different staves still, though :)

    Hahahaha, I just realized how straightforward our names are in French. The notes are called, in order you presented them: une ronde (a round), une blanche (a white), une noire (a black), une croche (a crooked, or maybe it’s from un crochet which is a hook) and une double (a double). I think it’s quite funny.

    Sometimes I like to take slight cheats. For example, the start of Fur Elise on piano, I tell myself to do FIVE semitones (between E and Eflat) before descending. I'll count them in my head so I don't have to look at each individual note.

      I can think if more. If I see G7 written, I tell myself "normal G7" as I discovered it first. If I see "Gmaj7", I tell myself "G with that semitonal thing going on" meaning the G and F#. 😄

    My mother taught piano lessons for many years. In the U.S. we refer to a memory aid as a "pony". The ones she taught her students included the "whole" rest "looks like" a hole in the ground and the half rest "looks like" a hat.
    I don't know about other parts of the world but, here in the United States, one of the most common "mistakes" in music is for people to not give the "rests" their proper value. Thus, if the last measure of a musical phrase in 4/4 time includes a dotted half note and a quarter rest, some people will play (or sing) the three-beat note and then give the quarter rest half of its allotted value - so the measure gets only 3-1/2 beats before they begin to play (or sing) the first note of the next phrase.
    I sometimes wonder aloud how such people can manage to walk. Would they trip themselves if they tried to walk the way they "count" the beats in a song?

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB  Год назад

      I agree about rests. It’s a common issue

    • @rogermetzger7335
      @rogermetzger7335 Год назад

      @@MusicMattersGB It has occured to me that some people might be under the impression that being the first person to sing (or play) the first note of a musical phrase constitutes "leading the music". Just a theory. No basis in evidence.

    very clear and good explanation, these videos are well done with a straight structure.
    the only thing I noticed the pause of the crotchet, there are different means to write them...here in Italy in old theory books are written like a double "quaver pause", which means something like a "Z" , rather than an inverted quaver pause.

      Hi. Have a look at our online Theory course at www.mmcourses.co.uk/p/music-theory-grades-1-to-8
      This covers everything you list. It’s explained step by step written down so you can see how to put it together and played with the piano keys lighting up on the screen so you can hear it all and see the notes. We have other courses too eg on Counterpoint. The multi-dimensional approach we take makes it better than trying to grasp theory from a book. Enjoy!
