What I have found, in 30 years of witchcraft, is that that sentiment is bass awkward.
That is to say, one can be incapable (either because of ethical or ritual abeyances, or temperament, or an outside imposition) of doing intentional violence; but one can still be quite capable of healing.
It is, for example, quite easy to help rehydrate someone, or provide them quiet & rest; & it is relatively effortful to turn those towards harm. Not impossible but hard enough that the maxim ought be "if you can heal you can harm" which has a twofold benefit. For one it does away with the exhorting to do harm onto others (regardless of one's position on the ethics of violence, demanding violence be universally practiced is bad) & for second it reminds one that one's actions -no matter how well intentioned- can have unintended & even negative consequences.

Herbalist here! I specialize in tea making (despite hating tea myself as a coffee chugging American). But, herbal teas when prepared correctly with good quality herbs have complex flavors. When in school I learned that herbal teas should be steeped longer than store bought teas. 20mins is the standard for herbal teas, especially if you want their medicinal value.

Apartments with bathtubs are becoming progressively less accessible to low income people in my area.
Not being able to do a "bath ritual" doesn't make one less of a witch. The mountain grannies and backwoods witch ladies used baths for healing but they wouldn't have wasted precious water and herbs for a personal ritual.

Also baths were rarely full body baths. More often you’d sit or stand in a large bassin, with maybe 20cm of water in it.
There were larger baths, but those were public, shared. And perhaps you wouldn’t have do rituals there.
Another option however was natural water, ponds, rain pools, streams. But it’s less accessible and it takes more will I guess. (I love cold streams but not everyone does). But then again it might make the result more powerful, because you had to put a lot of energy in it.

You're right in that some people get obsessed with cinnamon, but as for the “keep the food in the kitchen,“ sentiment you also expressed in a short, I have to disagree. Here in the US, we have long running traditions of hoodoo practice and one of the many “tools” in that toolbox are sprinkling powders. There are traditional mixes, and mixes that a practitioner can create on their own, and while I’ve never heard of any specific thing about blowing cinnamon around, it fits in well with some of what folks do.
Also, food items like honey, eggshells, crabshells, and cornmeal are used in other workings. Remember, not everyone who practices witchcraft is coming from an English perspective. Side note: rosemary, sage and lavender are food too. 😄 Love your channel, keep up the grump!

The thing to remember about the rhyming Parts of Wiccan lore is that it was Made up by a Middle-class class Middle aged woman fueled by copious amounts of red wine. Namely, Doreen Valiente. It isn't Holy Writ (not that Holy Writ is either). She was probably just trying to trump the Golden Rule.
Thinking of infusion, we went through a fad for home made spirit liqueurs. Most relevant were, lavender - which created a sort of inability to motivate - an extreme chill pill. Spice with a lot of *nutmeg* - hallucinogenic. Filter coffee and brandy - dubbed by the local ladies patched motorcycle club as 'rocket fuel' because it makes you very drunk and very awake at the same time. We stopped after the lavender because we were worried someone might end up catatonic.

I don't see why being middle class is relevant to someone's Witchery, and what is wrong about being a middle aged woman? They have experience and usually some wisdom. This is oddly dismissive about a woman who knew and wrote so much about witchcraft, Wicca and other traditions, some quite beautiful poetry - and prose, ritual and otherwise, whether fuelled by red wine or not. It's almost like hearing someone say the Beatles were overrated. I'd rather my initiates read Valiente than some of the other choices. That is, if you put positive energy out, you'll eventually get a roughly equal amount of positive energy back, but not necessarily in the same form. But the next day the emperor's soldiers came through the village, conscripting every able-bodied young man they found. "How lucky for you," the neighbors told the farmer, "that your son can't be drafted and marched away to fight and probably be killed!" But the very next week... You can see where this story is going. I meditate on it every time I believe something is Good or Bad. Right & wrong, in contrast, is something we ourselves understand about our own actions, and our right to judge each other's choices, and others' right to judge ours, is limited.

Decades ago when I actually did spells and not energy work, I would take a ritual bath after each spell as my spell wrap up/release. I used herbs wrapped in a cheesecloth and nothing else. Then I would rinse in a shower afterwards (which also rinsed the tub lol). If I did use ritual tea, I'd use the same herbs as I would be bathing in later and would drink it prior to the spellwork. But I agree...not a fan of drinking green lol.
I've never heard of the cinnamon thing. But I HAVE used cinnamon around windows and floorboards (but that was as a natural deterrent for ants, not any kind of ritual thing lol).
Also, I'm not a fan of "rules" lol. The rule of 3/7/10 is ridiculous. That's not how any of this works. And honestly, it is fairly toxic when you think about it. If you suddenly have a streak of bad luck, it leaves you wondering what you've done wrong, etc. I've even seen others blame "bad karma" (which don't get me started on how karma is completely misrepresented) and such for really nasty things happening to people and that's awful. It's not a universal law. The universe runs on balance. Chaos exists to prevent balance from growing stagnant. But good and bad are just matters of perspective...something bad happening to YOU might be something good happening to someone else. It's all a cycle. Trying to live and work in a place of balance is the key. Golden rules are great for morals and ethics but have nothing to do with universal laws.
Really enjoying your perspective. It's lovely to have a fellow grump out there sharing real wisdom.

"Who does that?" Me, honestly, though I'm personally of the opinion that herbal infusions don't count as tea unless there's actual leaves from the tea plant in it. 😂 On the other hand, the (heh) ritual of gathering the herbs together and slowly steeping them before adding honey and stirring to combine acts as much as a slowing down prelude to the relaxing boosted by then drinking the infusion. Those self care books don't go into that bit of it much, though, focusing more on the "potion" portion than the "use the brewing of this to kickstart making yourself slow down to relax".

Crazy thing is, if you spritz your hair with vinegar, it becomes soft and kind of like hair conditioner. You can then wash your hair as usual. I've never seen the sense in dumping various floaty bits into a bath. I do for a bath what you suggested for the shower, wrap herbs in cheese cloth, let it steep while the tub fills. Washing with handmade soaps made with the appropriate scents & herbs solves the issue of dumping oil in the bath. If you want a bubble bath, it's easy enough to turn some of that handmade bar into liquid soap. Add a bit of glycerin for added moisturizing.

I have to tell you that your no nonsense approach is refreshing. I don't believe in the rule three, but I see things this way. I practice for the connection to world it gives me, and moments of joy that I get when nice things happen to me and the world around me that I can affirm that I cause. And no nothing very big - lol. I've also had caused to do the same as you. Very very rarely, since I am mindful when I have done so of consequences to my life. My experience has been that your curse can be cast too wide in it's area of affect. Whether it be a neighborhood family or a full department at the workplace, for example. That's when the ripples hit many and act like a large rock in the pool. You see the ripples return stronger back to you. Overwhelming you like a miasma, or a shadow. In any case that's my thoughts. Loved your talk. This is the second one I've been able catch. I am looking forward to binge watching your earlier vlogs. Cheers and a great New Year to you!

For ritual baths, I either make a tea from the herbs I'm using to pour over myself before soaking, or I use cheesecloth to wrap the herbs and toss that into the tub. It never makes a mess.
As for curses, yes, I've done them. Only two led to very dramatic consequences, one in a similar circumstance to what you mentioned that resulted in a lost business, home, and arrest, the other in a child abuse case that led to arrest and loss of custody. I've never regretted that, and I don't feel like I suffered any sort of backlash or bad luck afterward. I helped people who needed it get justice they were otherwise denied. I can think of few better uses for magic.

I don’t like baths and now I am semi-crippled by the broken leg/ankle which, altho healed, will never be like before. Therefore getting in and out of a bath is life threatening. Even showers are daunting. BTW, Malbec, known as ‘the black wine of the Quercy’ was drunk at the wedding of Henry II and Eleanore of Aquataine! Cheers!

Bath bombs are nice, but I learned when starting out from writers who had to heat and prepare their own bathwater, so brewing an infusion as a pour-over or sponge bath, followed by fresh water and/or some kind of shower seemed the most obvious way to take a cleansing bath. They're also the easiest thing to clean up without breaking the mood before ritual, IMO.
Happiness and contentment are excellent goals to maintain at home, and where you can, really. Enough health and enough wealth that you can take some time to pause and read something you enjoy with a favorite beverage is something i wish for us all.

Few things in modern paganism are more misunderstood than the Wiccan Rede and Rule of Three. Briefly...
tldr 1: Context matters. While the word "wicca" gets applied to all sorts of things, traditional Wiccan concepts are exclusively for and about... *Wiccan initiates*. Not solitaries, not eclectics, not any other type of witch or pagan.
tldr 2: Neither the Rede or 3Fold is emphasized in traditional Wicca, they're not taught to be universal laws (gasp!). That attribution (or accusation) they are was made by everyone else.
tldr 3: *The Threefold does not imply what people think it does.* It is not about the universe heaping rewards or punishment in X-amount on anyone (gasp!). In context, it pertains to the actions of the initiate.
tldr 4: Subsequently, non-initiates either try to abide by or hate on what's really distorted info. And give the Rede & 3Fold far, FAR more attention than is found within the practice they come from.

Hello Annie! I found your channel a few days ago and I've been catching up with your videos. You are a breath of fresh air and I feel inspired to revitalise my practices. I've been in touch with my spirituality ever since childhood but only felt drawn to witchcraft 3 years ago through one of my best friends, who has been practising for quite some time. Neither of us is a "joiner". I've met a few self proclaimed priestesses and, frankly, have been unimpressed! I don't care for rules or hierarchy. So my friend and I celebrate and work together or individually. I have a lot to learn and, in you, I may have found a good teacher. Like you I'm drawn to Gaia, our Earth Mother. I could open up massively to you but I don't want to ramble on. So there are 2 things I want to say and then I'll bugger off! The first is to ask if you're an Aries? Agree with you, thank you for putting voice to it re pretty much everything. PS. bathbombs with bits of herbage get put in a mesh bag, herbal baths get the same thing as an herbal shower with the teabag approach. I'm not a fan of cleaning the tub after a good soak so I generally stick with some epsom salts, and a few scented candles and a cuppa tea or cocoa or adult beverage to sip while I soak. If I use oils, I will grab the dawn dish soap spray the tub down, get dried off and then rinse the tub with some very hot water through the handheld shower head. The dish soap removes the oils no scrubbing necessary.

I made a terrible mistake with someone;offering friendship and help. The end result was I wound up impoverished and crippled, but at least saving my home and land. OTOH the one who betrayed and injured me has been sitting in jail for over 2 years and if he is convicted at the upcoming trial, he will go to prison for the rest of his life. Alas, my ‘gut’ seems quite unreliable & even my dog liked this person. I made a ‘rookie mistake’ with the charts, and at my level and age, the penalty was huge. Now I am a nearly total recluse, surviving out here which takes a lot of time and effort, which at least keeps me active. Is this an example of the Rule? I think looking at one’s chart helps to understand how and in what circumstances that Rule may apply.

Hello. Thank you for sharing your insight, much appreciated. The unfortunate aspect of believing in "you get what you give" in whatever form it is touted is that then when a person experiences hardship or injustice it can be dismissed as if they had done something to bring it on themselves, while conversely equating success and well being with being a worthy, deserving person. I hear this type of rhetoric in conservative religious, self congratulatory voices. I agree with you in that this really doesn't hold up to scrutiny, it's more like a blame and shame game disguised as morality.... Just a thought .... 🦉

I do enjoy your videos. I too am a Yorkshire tea witch! I work with lots of herbs, but unless there is a specifically a reason for a 'tea', ie medicinal, I'll go for a packaged herbal every time. I've been doing ritual showers for over 30 years. Much easier. The Rede... It's a lovely tool for people who don't understand cause and effect. One can hope they learn balance. You're right, most religions have some form of 'Golden Rule'. As for anyone who's got a sensible attitude we learn to balance our lives. Sometimes you need to know both sides of the equation, curse/heal or good/bad. The real lesson is learning from life's experiences. If you're suffering, why, and how can you fix it? If life is joyful, be happy, and spread it to others. A better rule for me has always been to be true to myself.

The flipside is also that doing good things does not always lead to a threefold return either. Within the framework of wicca and the context of everything else that is part of that package, it makes sense for those following that path, but it only applies to those following that path, and on top of that, only the things they use magic to acomplish. Anything outside of that, it doesn't apply.

I knew a lady (not wiccan) who made lots of different herbal blends. One thing she often did was to add peppermint to her teas, because it would cover up the taste of some of the good-for-you-but-not-so-tasty herbs (valerian!). Star anise and ginger does the same.
Fun fact about herbal teas: Many of them were invented by American colonial women to replace real tea (which was being excessively taxed). They were called "liberty teas."
Re lavender flower...I add some to my Earl Grey. All the benefits of the black tea, with some nice lavender aromatherapy!

Cause and effect is a thing
    All actions have consequences
The whole trouble with the threefold law is people being entirely too literal minded about it, along with a hefty dose of people who want to act any which way without experiencing (or at least not acknowledging that they're experiencing) the natural and logical consequences of their actions.
The actual point and meaning of the threefold law is that when you plant a seed--expect that seed to grow. The seed of an Oak tree doesn't seem like much when it's first planted--but after a hundred years it is quite a sight to see. It takes time--you don't noticed the impact of it all at once--but that seed will reach it's logical destination.
The same principle applies to magick--and frankly, every aspect of life.
This is something I managed to understand in my first year of study. The fact that there is still controversy over something this basic, and this obvious is as disappointing as it is frustrating.
I've only seen a few of your videos, but I thought better of your understanding than this. What a pity.

Another aspect that literalists are oblivious to: "threefold" pertaining to the ways one's thoughts & deeds can significantly impact themselves in mind, body & spirit.

like many others watching you, i connect to what you speak about at a deep level, perhaps as a woman of a similar age, drawn to nature and the conundrums of life, (20ish year relationship with 2 kids/friends who shape us). i think we are caught up in the beliefs of 'good' and 'bad', but they're equal forces of energy (+ and -), and i've learned, from the global plan, to appreciate 'evil', they're doing the work that makes us break free of the paradigm. and agree about avoiding sanderson on account of his immense popularity, altho his story-telling abilities are the stuff of many how-to-write-great-fiction vids (altho with some grammar issues? but those don't matter if the story is great!) as is your ability, Mistress Grumpy! love from canada, and appreciate the recommendation of york gold!!!

The rule of three is poetic expression of a natural occurance. You tend to get back from the universe whatever energy you're sending out. The law of attraction is another such poetic expression, of the same natural occurance. The universe provides confirmation of our intent, which we can often see reflected back to us.
Instant karma is sometimes observed, as a matter of fact. It's not really pleasant to behold. The threefold rule seems more powerful as a personal code rather than a projection onto others, although I have found it useful in protection from outside influence. On the flip side, people can count blessings to any number or magnitude that resonates with them, doesn't have to be three for it to work for them. Each person is the center of their own universe in that regard.
The Golden Rule - not quite right, but seemingly well intentioned. I would say, Do unto yourself as you would have done to yourself, and Do unto others as THEY would have you do to them. If they don't happen to like the same things as you, then the Golden Rule isn't helping anyone get along. Even with this modified rule, we're required to understand and trust others in order for it to work out, but better than just projecting our own standards onto everyone else.

Rofl 😂 an oil bath almost busted my entire backside the next shower day 😂 I also stopped up my tub with flower buds once so now so use mesh satchels and place my herbs in that and let them soak. You could even make a “tea” and allow the tannins to release then just pour it in the tub, less aesthetic but WAY better clean up!

I'm an herbal tea from the bag kind of person. I'm currently going through boxes of Honey Lemon Ginseng tea like it's going out of style. In the summer I'll probably go back to lemon balm, bee balm, spearmint, and other stuff in the garden, but for now I get to pretend I'm someone from my Chinese martial arts novels while I drink my smelly hot water from the microwave, and that's fun. Occasionally I've done tea as an offering, but haven't for a while.
I meditate in the shower sometimes. I feel personally very connected to water and it relaxes me. I'd prefer a natural body of water, but I don't have that, so I'll take the shower. I don't use bath bombs or salts, but occasionally I'll get a bundle of eucalyptus and tie it to the shower spout for a nice fresh scent. Kind of a tangent here, but last February I got to pick rosemary from my father's house during my visit to Arizona, but I didn't have anything to grind it with, and only used about half of it in a broth just this past week.
PS I have a scarf that looks REALLY similar to that! Might even be the same one, I can't tell :o I got a big streak of red wax on it and have been trying to get it out with a blowdryer, lol.

Re: 3-fold return: Well done, Grumpy. Never heard it put so eloquently. Tho i s'pose it means three times the "good" we put out doesn't necessarily come back to us either, alas!

  • @eledatowle8767

I find that when we put out intent for certain aspects of life, like a certain lifestyle that will bring us contentment, and the universe starts to set that path up for us.... If we resist by holding tightly to something that no longer serves us (job, relationship, etc), the universe keeps upping the nudges to get us to move. If we continue to refuse, those become slaps. Once we move, even if it's painful and fearful in the beginning, looking back from the wisdom of the future, we see that the change was pivotal to allowing the universe to help us along the path we desired, resulting in us getting to a much better place. To be clear, this is NOT saying that "all bad things are good." This doesn't apply to deaths or illnesses, simply to us clinging to outdated parts of our life when making a change is required for us to progress. I'm so glad you and Mr Grumpy Old Crone were given the opportunity to build a life together that brings happiness to you both.

Does anyone remember 'Bath Cubes' that were huge in the 80s, given at almost every female birthday? And also those tiny soaps shaped like fruit, animals etc that could be bought in gift shops? We had a bowl of them in our bathroom.

Man, bath cubes and bath oil beads walked so bath bombs could run, fr.
I used to get a set of floral bath cubes for pretty much every holiday as a kid. We had a small apartment and I get agitated easily, so I made a tiny ritual out of taking a bath with a new bath cube just to get some piece during all the holiday fuss. 😅 I miss them!
