- I decided to go early this year to look for elk at the Slippery Ann Viewing Area on the C. M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in North Central Montana. This was as early in the season as I have ever gone. Typically I wait until the last week or so of September, but this year I went over the Labor Day Weekend. I was hoping by going early maybe I could beat some of the crowds, but I was wrong. There were already a lot of people out looking as well. I was hoping to go early so maybe I could get some clean audio without all of the typical background noise from the crowds and people driving and everything. But as you can hear, that was not the case. So I decided to not bother trying to clean up the audio at all and just letting it be what it is. I guess this illustrates a more realistic feel for how it is to visit. If you do go visit in person, I hope you do keep in mind that people are there to enjoy nature, so it would be courteous to keep your voices down and your driving back and forth on the road to a minimum. Besides the elk, there was a big group of turkeys that were fun to watch as well.

Gods great gift to all of us
beautiful amazing place where it is 🇺🇸
I don't see very many male elk there. Are you allowed to kill the wild turkey and have them for Thanksgiving dinner?
Ray, this is normal herd dynamics for rutting elk. The larger bulls chase off all of the smaller and younger bulls so they are not a threat to their harem of cows. This particular stretch of the river is closed to hunting, but there are areas near by you can hunt for turkeys. If you are on the refuge you cannot use lead shot however.
