If I didn't know who Ren was and this was the first video I'd seen with no insight in his past. I would still be in awe of just the sounds he makes that piano make. The cord change and flickers that kind of make sound visible at 12:00 just kills me.
Music comes from so many places. There's no specific way to write music. There are rules, but once you know those rules, you can break them, because you'll understand why you're breaking them. Sometimes people subconsciously just write something and it works. I've done it with music projects when I took music courses and at home. Nothing as elaborate as Ren, at least nothing written down. My brain has so many ideas, but I as well as others have a difficult time expressing our ideas. Then there are those like Ren who seem to have a way with expressing their musical ideas in such a way, it's just simply beautiful.
There are two main ways to approach composing instrumental music: start with the melody or the chord progression. Music Theory isn't just about reading notation. It's the study of how chords evoke emotions and create a sense of structure within a piece. Understanding theory allows you to intentionally convey the feelings you want your music to express. Music composition, like painting or poetry, involves learning established techniques and traditions. This knowledge gives you the tools to shape your own artistic expression. As a rapper, you already understand how to use rhythm and rhyme to create art. Learning basic music theory can open up new creative possibilities for you. It can enhance your understanding of how music works and allow you to combine your rapping skills with traditional melodic and harmonic elements. Resources like GarageBand, Muse Score, and online classes are great ways to start. RUclips channels like Alex Moukala can also provide practical insights into the composing process. Seriously, friend. With all of your prior experience in production and performance of any type, just start scratching the surface on Music Theory and see where it leads you. It can really open up the doorways of expression. Like it did for Ren.
Just to note, he's doing alternate chords / progressions with his hands and crossovers. That's not basic at all, a lot of people would struggle to do that as your brain naturally fights against those opposite movements.

Many won’t know who Lewis was. When Callum had his tragic accident Lewis also died trying to save him. Here is an extract from the Coroner’s report: ‘ A father whose son drowned in rough seas off Anglesey has praised the "unstinting bravery" of the friend who died trying to save him. Lewis Darroch, from Valley, dived into the water at Cable Bay on 24 August last year when Callum Mackay, also 22, from Llanfairpwll, got into trouble. Mr Darroch was forced to give up but the waves swept him back into the sea. Steven Mackay paid a "huge tribute" and backed a posthumous award. Accidental death inquest verdicts were recorded. Mr Darroch was recovered by helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, while Mr Mackay's body was found a week later. Coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones said: "The decision to go swimming in the conditions that prevailed that day wasn't wise. "Although it wasn't difficult to go in the sea the problem was in getting out and the waves were such they were unable to get out safely. "I think Callum's enthusiasm was too much for him in that he decided he was going swimming. It wasn't a wise decision. "If he wasn't so enthusiastic he might not have jumped in. Callum can be Scottish or Irish but I’m not sure if it’s indigenous to Welsh or if they have their own version of it. In any event both names are Celtic in their roots but the pronunciation if you don’t know can be very tricky.

He was my rock when I needed to vent. I suffer from depression and he always called me everyday just to make sure I was OK. I had no clue he was going through depression also. Callum is pronounced the same as Al as in "You can call me Al!" It is also pronounced by Ren at the end of his Song Su!cide at about 190 seconds in when he is talking about missing going out with the lads.
As a Scot, I am used to the name Callum or Calum which is a popular Scottish boys name. We also have the name Kaylum too pronounced the way you said it. Also McKay is a Scottish surname or family name too. It has it's own tartan. In Scotland McKay is pronounced McKy but in England they pronounce it the same as you. The music is haunting and atmospheric.
Over here in the UK we would pronounce his name as C.AL..LUM as in *Paul Simons* (You can call me AL) but BP it doesent really matter.. thanks for the great reaction...i have just lost a really good friend only a few days ago and this beautiful piece of music really resonates with me...massive respect from Liverpool UK

There are common chord progressions just like there are common word combos in rap. But he is self-taught so there's a few unpredictable choices and that comes from just "feeling" and creating on the spot. His sound design choices are very specific to his taste and that is what makes what he does always special to me.

I lost my Dad a little over a year ago. Everyday I picture leaning over my Dad trying to resuscitate him... It starts out calm, to me when it speeds up reminds me of his comment about how as kids Callum was always up to whatever crazy things they got into then it calms and becomes peaceful as his way of saying good bye.

This song reminds me of music from my favorite pianist. Beautiful. When Netflix had the Moving Art videos they originally included music by pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi (they don't anymore), that's when I discovered how much I loved his music. There's a video on YT where he plays a baby grand piano while floating on a raft in the arctic ocean, near glaciers. It's breathtaking.

There are common chord progressions just like there are common word combos in rap. But he is self-taught so there's a few unpredictable choices and that comes from just "feeling" and creating on the spot. His sound design choices are very specific to his taste and that is what makes what he does always special to me.
Makes me think of the end of an anime show/movies with the characters walking down a path with h cherry blossom leaves falling. Absolutely beautiful. Not saying or comparing it to anything like that. Just has a beautiful vibe.

No lyrics, yet you can feel what he's saying. He's remembering loss, then growing up and the good times. Then the accident, and the grief. It ends with a sort of sad acceptance. That's how the song made me feel at least.

It starts out calm, to me when it speeds up reminds me of his comment about how as kids Callum was always up to whatever crazy things they got into then it calms and becomes peaceful as his way of saying good bye.

When Netflix had the Moving Art videos they originally included music by pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi (they don't anymore), that's when I discovered how much I loved his music. There's a video on YT where he plays a baby grand piano while floating on a raft in the arctic ocean, near glaciers. It's breathtaking.

It's a short 'a' as in happy or bag, not a long 'a' as in call. Hence - Cal-lum. The 'u' is short too and there's a slight emphasis on the first syllable 'Cal'. Hope that helps. :)
