RIP Donald Sutherland.
1970, Bob Altman with a small budget makes a movie from a novelette. Result, returns a bloody fortune from it. Genius!!!!!!!
Roger Altman made only $75,000 for directing M*A*S*H. He wanted the “stupidest lyrics ever” for the song so he asked his 14 year old son to write them, who did it in five minutes. His son has made over $2 million over the years from royalties because the song was later used for both the movie and the TV series theme, even though the TV theme didn’t use the lyrics until the final episode.
@@kevinL5425I heard somewhere that a lot of tv theme tunes came with lyrics because even if the filmmaker didn’t use them the extra royalties still had to be paid.
The 70s for cinema was rich. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Clockwork Orange, Godfather I & II, Patton, Apocolypse, Deer Hunter, the In Laws, Rocky, ....
Yup... that's very true. What has happened to "cinema?"
Star Wars
Rocky and Bullwinkle maybe.
…And Justice for All
Dog Day Afternoon
Serpico
The Exorcist
The Omen
Marathon Man
All the President’s Men
Kramer vs. Kramer
Chinatown
Five Easy Pieces
Network
etcetera
Look what there is now:

RIP Donald Sutherland (July 17, 1935 - June 20, 2024), Aged 88
So sad, Sally Kellerman has passed at 84. She was great!
Love this film. Donald Sutherland RIP
Fun fact: this was the first mainstream movie EVER to use an f-bomb. Crazy when you think that this was 1971.
More like '69 or '70!
1970.
I thought it was "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
It was April of 1970 when I took the daughter of the Miami Dolphins owner, Joe Robbie, to see this groundbreaking film. The heavy amount of sexual content had me hoping I could at least get to 2nd base with Debbie. Alas, there was more action in the movie than any experienced by yours truly. Over a half-century later, what seemed cool then was very condescending to those who took war seriously. Also, boomers remember when "Made in Japan" meant piece of crap. By the end of the decade, that had changed. Electronics and autos from Japan started to corner a significant chunk of their markets. By the end of the 1980s, Japan had reached their high point. Then overvalued Japanese real estate and competition from first, Korea, then China by the 1990s would keep the country from dominating any market sector. Anyway, the movie now looks dated, its treatment of women almost misogynistic, and the hip smugness of the main characters elitist. On the other hand, the TV show was truly great, particularly during the Maclean Stevenson era.
1970
When MASH was re-released in the theaters in the 70s, my mom told my sister and me (both under 17 yo), "Come on, you're going to the movie." Bought the tickets for us (being Rated R), handed them to us and went home. (Did the same with "Blazing Saddles"). Needless to say, we loved it! Sis was already a huge fan of the TV show. What a cool mom!
BTW, René Auberjonois was asked if he wanted to play Father Mulcahey in the new TV show, but he declined because he didn't think it was going to go anywhere. Prolly wanted to go DOH! when it became a big hit.
RIP, Donald -- you'll always be the true Hawkeye Pierce to me, finestkind!
The amount of actors who left or were played by different actors shows MASH ended up being a bit of a actors graveyard, still running in 1983 even the army never overstayed their welcome that much.😂
RIP Donald
"Animal House" was the "M.A.S.H." of the late 1970s.
Both featuring Donald Sutherland!
@_pascalwittwer Good point. Ii hadn't thought of that.
Respect to all the veterans on this Memorial Day weekend 2024. 💐🌷🗽✌️
I think at least one scene from the trailer wasn't in the final movie. I'd love to see what the cut scenes and outtakes looked like.
This stuff definitely never would've aired on the TV show XD
"Hotlips you incredible nincompoop, it's the end of the quarter"
LOL...what a classic movie
Might be one of the top funny moments in this film and it’s not rated R
@Ihitthings3 it's been re rated to R
Happy 50th Anniversary. It's been fifty years since this movie was first released.
My favourite Donald Sutherland film...
Elliott Gould with the umbrella made me pee my pants when I was a kid
Why does the "buy or rent" info say that this film was made in '66 when it was made in 1970?
The OG Dark Comedy movie
Here's a tidbit of unfortunate related info. The filming of the tv show were the foothills where Kobi's chopper went down.
One of my favourites by Altman.
RIP billy Hutchinson 1942 2022
Watched the show reruns in 00s and I love it, this is the first time I have seen any part of the movie - though I was well aware that the movie had quite a different tone and messaging compared to the show. But truly wild that this movie spawned what the TV show became. Though you do see a bit more of it in the first season.
RIP Sally Kellerman
A CLASSIC. when movies Where made with spirit of entertaiment WELL done, excelente humor and wonderful Actores RIP DONALD SUTHERLAND ❤️
Even back then they couldnt resist showing the half of the damn movie in a trailer.
This movie looks it Could easily be turned into a movie about a group of obnoxious teenagers who are stuck at a summer camp or something
1:10 Isn’t he the guy who played as Ross’ dad?
Yes, that is indeed Elliot Gould. Father Mulcahy is played by the same guy who played Odo on DS9 and Clayton on Benson.
@@blackjac5000 The late Rene Auberjonois. He was also McCabe and Mrs. Miller, another Robert Altman film.
Although the movie was set in Korea, it was really about the Vietnam War.
To be fair, the book it's based on was a fictionalized account of a real Korean War MASH doctor's experiences.
@@blackjac5000 Very true. I have read it. Often a director or screenwriter will deviate or build on the original work.
@@blackjac5000 Who hated the adaptation. The author wasn't anti-war
The TV show never lived up to the movie. tamed by the censors I suppose, and the sanctimony of Alan Alda.
As with The Odd Couple, the TV version was better
some of same scenes, same lines were used in the TV series...."this isn't a hospital, it's an insane asylum"
This movie has something to offend every idiot sub-type. I love it!
Suicide is painless
awesome cast
Now we know how she got the name 'Hot Lips'! 🔥💋
I love m*a*s*h.
sally r.i.p. ... the war is against life which is our enemy !!!!!!!
WHERE CAN I WATCH THIS!?!?!?!
Amazon prime video for $15. You can also buy the tv series too. Each season is $20.
@@MpaYn That is wayyy too much.
Good movie
Hotlips you incredible nincompoop .. its the end of the quarter... Lmfao
Then you look at movies today and wonder where did it all go wrong!?!?
Disney owns this now. PFFFFFTTTT!!!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡😡
That makes Klinger a Disney princess
You can't be serious.
@@TheUltimateCrash1990 Afraid I am. They own what used to be called 20 Century Fox studios, now it’s called 20th Century Studios.
@@TheUltimateCrash1990 And that SUCKS!!!!!
Užas od filma! Žali Bože izgubljenog vremena!
Google translate
The horror of the movie! God regrets the lost time!

Explains exactly why me being born in 81 always wanted to commit suicide listening to the intro of the show!! I still hate it to this day!!! They purposely made a suicide song for the intro of the movie saying it's painless!!!
sally kellerman is an interesting person. otherwise, i preferred to watch the tv version with Alan alda.
thefilm that balances trash with smash..
black comedy gets grins but not Oscar..
LARRY AND CHRISTOPHER CATHOLICS ULEWITZ
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Atrocious movie. One of the worst ever made. Critics who raved about it are evil.
l agree, its boring and the way Frank is portrayed playing a christian man is appalling but thats part of their agenda. Its has nothing on catch 22
@@idak12 Christian guys like that are a dime a dozen.
Too bad posterity disagrees with you.
@@idak12 The Priest is a good Christian, Frank is a bad one.
I TOTALLY disagree...This Movie was 1 of a Kind & the Critics who Raved about this were "Spot on"!! The TV series was OK BUT this Flick was Ahead of its TIME!!!! ****
This movie is horrible
In what way? By exposing the reality behind the horrors of war?
hater spotted
Gary Burghoff Came From This Movie As Radar O' Reilly To TV Show Only One Cast From Movie He Was Actually Cast First Believe It Or Not Was Wise Choice For TV Show
Bad movie
All the jokes in this movie fall flat without a laugh track
i rented disc one of the tv series and it includes a version w/o the laugh track and I liked it better.
I got all epps of the TV show without the laugh track. if you can't tell where to laugh without a prompt its not funny to begin with.
RIP Donald Sutherland.
I’m ex army and it’s not romantic as people say. I got medals for my “sins “but didn’t want them. Younger friends died and I was training hard for longer than my nco’s
This movie was very boring. Jokes are very outdated and the movie relies om the jokes.
Maybe learn how to spell 'billybob' first, before u critique movies, ehh..Professor?? ":^)
