The Lotus Omega was tested by many car magazines when it was new in 1990. Since many testers saw 300km/h (186mph) on the speedo, the performance of 283km/h (176mph) wasn't just a theoretical top speed which many supercar manufacturers (no names not to offend their fans) still used to brag with. Some of them were even tuned to around 500hp meaning nothing could match them at the time. Since they are rare elsewhere and look inconspicuous they are truly sleeper cars in every sense of the word.

the Lotus Omega was an absolute beast in its day. Unfortunately, it was also very prone to defects, especially the clutch was a permanent guest at the mechanic's. I once had contact with a Lotus Omega on the main road. At that time I was driving my Kawasaki GPZ900R and in front of me the Opel which I classified as an Omega 3000. When I tried to easily pass him, it catapulted the Omega away. I had to turn the Kawa into the red zone to catch up again and only then did I see that it was the extremely rare Lotus model. At the next traffic light we nodded to each other.
So much happened in those years. GPZ 900 had only 240 kph top speed, so already at 200 it should start to struggle big time. Meanwhile the marginally newer ZX-11R could keep up with the Omega's 283 kph speed (of course humiliating it in Accelation.). Both vehicles are legends for sure. Nothing to match it these days

Loved the lotus carlton, remember it being launched ans saw it at the NEC motor show, they wanted it banning in the UK because the police said it was the only car they could not catch.
Police wanting a car banned for being fast? Absolute BS. There have always been fast cars - the police make do with the fastest they can afford, which is never as fast as a proper sports car. @@pd4165 There is truth to attempt to get it banned in the U.K. They were the gold standard of getaway vehicles back then and the police had nothing at all that could touch them. No matter what the rozzers were using to run them down, as soon as one of these things got a clear run on a motorway in the early hours, ten times out ten, they were gone. It wasn't the police themselves, but the ACPO, which was essentially council of chief police officers, who wanted to ban them from the roads. It was pretty well covered in the press at the time, with at least one major newspaper launching a campaign in support of the ACPO's proposal.

Saw one of these just once, as it left it a little late (or so I thought) coming out in front of me, from the Hethel road, Norfolk, (the home of Lotus) onto the B1113 going southbound. Darkened glass, unmarked black bodywork. I need not have worried; by the time I passed his joining road, he was 300 yards ahead of me, making me appear as though I was stationary. Strange the way these things stay in the memory, when you see an outstanding car.
You'd think by now that this car is so well known to the Police that their manual should state "If you see a car with Lotus Carlton on the back, Don't even try to stop it, because you can't!"
@Kicos Ger Lotus Carlton* (or Vauxhall Lotus Carlton if you will). It's basically a Vauxhall Carlton tuned by Lotus. In rest of the Europe it was known as the Opel Omega and it was a basis for the Australian Holden Commodore.
Contrary to some opinions, I think this time the unmarked police car's driver was very cautious, which is not always the case. Sometimes they are reckless idiots. However, at 0:40 it's obvious they lost him unless they have another unit available in the direction he's traveling, and he's not a total and complete amateur. They had no chance. What is going on at 1:40? Is the police driver not even trying, or are the Swedish cops limited to 200 km/h, as if that's supposed to be somehow safer according to some feminist bureaucrat? I don't know the exact specs of this car, but if it's the newer model even with lowercase "t", the engine produces 173 hp. Top speed should be in excess of 230 km/h.
What a beast of a car that was. We had Senator 3.0 24v and they were pretty quick, but not Lotus quick! I'd have easily kept with him on my bike though.
It left them as if they were standing still. :) The Lotus Omegas was a wolf in sheep wool. Nobody expected that car to pull away and reach over 280 Km/h.

I had an opel omega 1.8 115hp.at 2005 i got it with 200.000km.i kept it for 2 years adding 50000km.the car was bought in 1989.i sold it to a friend until 270.000km,hesold it too.Not one mechanical or electrical problem in 16 years.just one pump relay. All the electronics said Bosch made in germany.amazing car.when it was raining it was apleasure also...quality cars back then(not safer though).
I used to have one of these. I was cruising at 130 kph on a straight stretch of the SS7 between Villa Laterno and Casal di Principe near Naples one day when a Mini came up behind me. An impatient Neapolitan driver was at the wheel flashing his lights at me. I dropped from 6th to 4th and floored it. I saw a Carabinieri enter the highway at Casal, let off the gas, and looked down. 245 kph and the Mini was nowhere in sight.
I remember having a bit of a blast on the M45 in my rare 1974 Firenza HPF which could top 120mph (OK, not fast nowadays) and a Lotus Carlton came past as if I was stationary. He gave me a casual wave as one rare Vauxhall owner to another. Nice bit of road that...
Droop Snoot , yeah I had a tuned up one with high lift cam twin side daft Webber’s over-bored pistons with an overdrive gearbox, certainly quicker than 120mph from memory 🎉
@@paulmartin2429 what was the reg? I owned another in the 80s that fits this description, owner had rolled it and I rescued it from the insurer's scrap pile. It was too much work for me, but I sold it on and it's still around.
@@GRAHAMAUS sorry I can’t remember now long past my memory sell by date! 😛
Omg.. Lotus Carlton/Omega is probably the sickest car of its time. When it was sold, there was no police car that could catch up with it and apparently there still isnt many :O
Ever since this video was new, I stop by at least twice a year for a good laugh :)
Edit: hearting my comment after 6 years, my man!
Edit 2: awww he took my heart away...
why? they got his registration number.
@@geirmyklebust in sweden it is the driver that is at fault and not the owner and owner dont need by law to tell who drove the car and the driver dont got caught so its a loss for the police.
Here 3/31/21 lol.
In early 90 in DTM series, Omega was not competitors for anyone. But in the civilian version as the Lotus Omega, he was a beast.
It’s different cars - road version of dtm omega is evolution 500
Lol fuck pulling over when you're in a car like that
As far as I know the police saw the driver.
Before the recording started they were side by side for a little while and the officer recognized the driver.
They had encounters before and the officer knew who he was on sight.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd... it's gone
but, they got the cars registration number.
But in sweden they need to see the driver to give them a sentence and they didnt see him here atleast not in the video so seeing the plates doesnt matter :)
In theory he is free to go, after a good deal trouble with the police.

instead of running away he should have just said he was an illegal immigrant, that would get you let off in Sweden
The sad thing about this comment is that it is actually true :/

illegal immigrants are not allowed to own and drive car
Hmm yes, i'm sure *illegal* immigrants would pay attention to vehicle licensing laws.
sure, but they cant afford cars
I worked for gm back in the day, our branch had one as a demonstrator for a bit, it was known as Black Death, saw many people get out of that car ill. I never took it out the dealership myself, don’t know if it was fear or respect

i love how this is the first video that comes up when u search lotus omega:d

try 12 hours from sunrise to sunset up north in Alaska towards the end of winter. a couple feet of snow everywhere, highs in the 20's, lows in the single digits. Dead of winter, -40 or -50 sometimes, 4 hours of daylight. Now that's weird. First year I was stunned!

Complete bollocks - it wasn't as fast as many sports cars - and when has anyone tried to ban sports cars?
@@pd4165 yeah but for that Time/Era that was Rapid
There’s a lotus Carlton in Britain that was used used for armed robberies it was known as 40RA the uk police had nothing at the time that could catch the car or robbers it even lost a helicopter on the M6 in a straight line they where never caught the car has never been recovered ( to my knowledge ) it’s a big icon in the uk
@@pd4165 It was the fastest production sedan and could easily reach 300 km/h in 5th gear meanwhile it had a 6 speed corvett gearbox. After engine tuneing you could reach 340 km/h which is something crazy even now.
@@pd4165 Lotus took them to testing at Mugello race track, Ferrari Testdrivers complained about it, well they just couldn't keep up, so they banned the Lotus from driving on the track.
One does not expect to catch up to a Lotus Omega that easily
That legend in the Lotus... Deepest respect...
@ McLarenMercedes: the Italian Police now have Lotus Evoras. Wise choice (though unpatriotic). In this video you can hear the brakes of the Saab complaining as they slow down from 200k to 100k...
WOW REALLY 9K QUALITY!!!!
🤡
Back in 92 I went to buy a part from a Vx dealer in the UK and he input the part number incorrectly and priced just one front brake disc for this crazy car. It was £940!
I had this video in its lower quality back in the day and knew it was 100% genuine. I have been at the Lotus factory and seen them fly off the start line on the test track. They are like sh1t off a shovel. 3.5 litre twin Garrett turbos on a lightened subframe with Lotus suspension. It held the record as the fastest 5 seat production car for some time. Top speed of 175mph. But some went over that 😜. Amazing car !! Thanks for posting the HQ vid
Dude this was the second fastest streetlegal Sedan at it's time (283Km/h) right after Alpina B10 Biturbo (291Km/h). Based on the german Opel Omega with 3L inline six engine, Lotus modified it to 3.6L with Biturbo which gained 377hp. In GB they sold it under the Name Lotus Carlton afaik.
Correct.
Now imagine how relatively easy it would have been to make it a bit lighter, tune it up a bit. It could go Hypercar speeds. Legendary car.
if this video is high quality, 480p then i don't want to know what's low quality...
Do you notice when this video was posted? It was old by then. 480p was the highest RUclips supported back then. 140p was still around you know...
+Piktor99
Dude don't comfuse it with the HD 720 or 1080p
HQ is this 480 p ..But yet again in those pixels we can have good or bad quality it depends from the prototype video's quality !!
+Piktor99 :) This video is probably older than you, sir and at least 10 years older than RUclips.

It is actually SUPER HIGH quality - compared to the same footage but watched on a 14" CRT screen and 240p effective resolution :)

How many Volvos did you see?
Did I just see a police car pass another car into oncoming traffic at the crest of a hill at 2:21 just barely missing on coming cars? This cop is driving more reckless than the Lotus!

Police wanting a car banned for being fast?
Absolute BS.
There have always been fast cars - the police make do with the fastest they can afford, which is never as fast as a proper sports car.
There was talk in the press that the LC was a bad idea, but the press also campaigned against Cobras in the 60s.
@@pd4165 the LC 250 brought an end to the 250cc L plate laws coz it was so mental, lol i was a 350lc man. No its true the police did want the lotus carlton banning and some MP's brought the matter up in the house of parliment. I was around when it made the headlines.
@@pd4165 There is truth to attempt to get it banned in the U.K. They were the gold standard of getaway vehicles back then and the police had nothing at all that could touch them. Cross county policing wasn't what it is these days, police helicopters were few and far between and CCTV cameras along the main routes were only just starting to appear.

1990 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.2 seconds and achieve 0-100-0 mph in less than 17 seconds (straight out of Wiki). Its a 30 year old saloon. That's incredible. My 2017 Golf R "may" just beat it of the blocks but it would quickly smash it.
The Lotus Carlton still is a serious car. Which I could afford one
you can watch three things forever, how the fire burns, how the water flows, how the lotus omega leaves the cops

What are they driving , a yugo ?
What Yugo that you know of reaches 120+ mph?
Saab 9-3 2.0T
If they drive a 9-3 2.0T why do they even try?
The Lotus' guy (or girl?) would have plenty of time to go off road and hide :-)
Looked like they were chasing a ghost Lotus . puff ! and it disappears.
its not any "ghost", they got his registration number.
You'd think by now that this car is so well known to the Police that their manual should state "If you see a car with Lotus Carlton on the back, Don't even try to stop it, because you can't!"
go omega !!!
I love the old Lotus Omega!
Absolutely smoked them! Amazing.

Yeah but the acceleration is horrible and this road is not exactly safe to do top speed runs.
Maybe they didn’t fancy travelling at 140mph. A puncture at that speed would be fatal.
3.6 377 bhp against 150 bhp
its not a race, just highlighting the pace of the omega against an average car.
not even average... the saab is a quite good car the ''average'' may be a 120hp car... that saab should have 173bhp if i think right
Wymiatacz Plays its about average these days, sorry.. back then it was above average. still is slightly but not much.

High quality in 1994
Actually these did 190mph. You had to redline in 5th for a second then shift to 6th and it turned off the limiter. Look it up.
there is no limiter. 6th gear is too long and it will only slow down. to get v-max in these you just leave it in 5th and you will see about 300kph.
It left them as if they were standing still. :)
The Lotus Omegas was a wolf in sheep wool. Nobody expected that car to pull away and reach over 280 Km/h.
