Finally I could ride UK to Sweden *again*! Eurostar, Brompton & tent. Tons of mistakes! but happy!

- I was about to set off on my Brompton and ride to Sweden in spring 2022 when I discovered that my breast cancer was back. Everything was put on hold whilst I was treated for that. Finally in June 2023, more than a year later than planned, I packed my tent and stove onto my Brompton bike, and super excited and happy, and sooo thankful and feeling so fortunate - more than I know how to say - I set off. My husband is Swedish, and the idea was to ride to him.
I made loads of mistakes as you will see. Not important!
This is the first of three films about the ride. Hope you enjoy it!

Dear Susanne, you are a real star and a source of inspiration for many people. Thank you for all your efforts and I hope you don't suffer too much. In other words, that there is a nice and healthy balance between effort and relaxation.
A bike helmet would be a great addition. I took a fall last year and it saved my life. Broke my helmet in 2 places, but not my skull
I concure! I got doored a couple of years back, and did a flip over the handlebars. Landed on the road, broke my elbow 😩but the helmet saved my skull 🙂! Helmets are non-negotiable.

What I have learned from my travels is that when we forget maps and see every time we are lost, we are actually on the path that life sends us on. Its allowing for life to run freely. My best experiences came from that..... so inspirational Susanna!

It felt soooo good to be able to do that trip. I was just saying to Colin who commented on here how I pushed my train ticket back and back, hoping for the best, getting setbacks, moving the ticket and hoping again... This is so great to see! I live with complex mental illness which disables me a lot and cycling has given me back a lot of independence. I want to cycle through France to Rotterdam so this is inspiring!

I think taking a break on a multi day trip can work wonders, sometimes it's good to get away from chasing progress.

Hi Sandy! Aw thank you for the lovely comment. Yeh during these dark wet winter days, I really enjoyed making this very summery film. The soundtrack of cycling in summer was what struck me the most, blackbirds singing in the evenings, and things like that, so lovely! Yes a longer trip is a brilliant thing, I love the feeling, the days stretching ahead, nothing to do but ride and eat and sleep and watch things go by, wonderful. I felt so lucky, dream come true. I really enjoyed this video! And I had to laugh when you got lost in the streets of Amsterdam, because I once got "stuck in a roundabout" when I was there by car. For around two hours, no matter which route we took, we always ended up in that same roundabout, it was unbelievable 😀

Always good to see you cycling and smile even when driving wrong. When 'cycling by numbers' we always try to remember only the last digit of the two. Works well as long as there are no waypoints with the same last digit on a junction. In that case we get off our tandem and reward ourselves with a little break and a look at the map.
Sat watching your video as the rain beats against the windows. You brought summer into the room. Fantastic to see you back. 😊

This summer I rode across Europe as well, and am having trouble remembering just how wonderful it was in this miserable British January weather we're having. Thank you for this wonderful travelogue, I can almost feel the sun shining on my face again and the wind beneath my wheels.

So pleased to see you back on the bike and looking so well. A real boost to my mood as I've been a bit down as my wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She's due an operation in Feb and afterwards she'll be told what they find and what further treatment she'll need. Were ignoring it at the moment and planning bike holidays for 2024.

Aw Colin thank you for writing. I am so sorry to hear this. Bravo you and your wife for focusing on what you enjoy. You are strong to do that. God it so reminds me of me, planning and stuff - I had my Eurostar ticket, and I was literally packing to set off... and then as all the cancer scans and tests and an operation etc etc unfolded, at each setback I kept moving the ticket to Amsterdam back and back... I had maps all over the sofa through it all and was planning things and dreaming kind all the time, well not all of the time cos sometimes I was just sad and afriad and black, not gonna lie, but a lot. When I burst out on my bike just for those little rides I did during chemo near London omg it felt so great. Cycling and being outside made things so much better. I treasure it all so much. Being able to do things. Anyway. I hope you and your wife are having a nice morning and I hope it is sunny where you are and send best wishes to you both xxx

I was just wondering what Susanna is doing...and here you go ;)
I've did the same journey twice, along approx the same route. The Netherlands are a delight, I found the cycle system easy to navigate by writing down the nodes that I had to go thro, notebook and pen, required. I accessed Friesland by the causeway further North, both times, its a classic. Good to hear from you again, cycling is the best therapy for all of lifes horrors.
Glad you liked my country. For people who want to use the causeway in future, it’s been closed to cyclists unfortunately, because of renovations. It will be reopened, so make sure to do your research:)

If you make a light batter mix ,dip elderflower in then just quickly in and out of deep fry pan it is supposed to be nice.

I thought Friesland was beautiful, the whole Netherlands really beautiful actually, and so well set up for people (of all ages!) to enjoy back-to-basics camping, loads of beautiful farm campsites etc. The Lettelbert campsite I stayed at is run by volunteers I think. Next time going to a large supermarket/hardware store like that Gamma place just get a trolley and put the folded Brompton in it to take in with you.

Thanks to you I now know one more nice campingsite in Noord-Holland (I saw where about you were, looked for camping in that region, found it with the photo of the old farm etc.). I'll keep that in mind for when I'll do a cycle trip in that direction.
And some more interesting information for when I'll go in the other direction (Northern Germany en maybe even Denmark)
Oh that was a fantastic campsite, the one near Schildwolde. I loved it. They had a little old barn and a bench where you could sit and have a piece of apple cake, help yourself and pay in an honesty box. And a washing machine. They were very kind lovely people. They put out little twinkly candles along the wall in the evenings. Beautiful

Hi Julie! Ah it is brilliant that jacket, I love it. I got it from Decathlon a few years ago. It It was in their Simond rock climbing range. I got it end of line cheapo about 35 quid. I rode round the Netherlands 10 years ago, your trip brought back beautiful memories. The knooppuntroutes take some getting used to but once you have them sorted then it’s easy navigating. Can’t wait for the German and Danish leg videos.
