Portugal That being said, I will thumb down any negative comment (if I see any). We are allowed to like different things especially when it comes to music. I love how giddy you get when you speak of Norway in my opinion they will most likely win televote. I love their IG feed, it's absolutely what we needed after the pandemic. You are becoming my nr1 Eurovision youtuber because you're just being honest unlike many others who can be a bit obnoxious at times just to get views. So thanks for that ❤ Almost forgot to mention, this is for me the strongest year since 2016 although maybe not as many songs to have on repeat as from 2016. But this year is amazing, I want to put like 20 songs in my top 10 and I want at least 30 songs in the final 😂

Tom. 2 comments (and I'll probably add more later) 1. Norway...I do think it could win and this is why. This year there are a lot of songs that are jury bait- artistically strong songs sung well. The problem is that those sorts of songs dont have a huge amount of televote appeal and so I think the jury votes will be pretty evenly spread and we will be left with a close race. I think v because there are a lot of similar songs, the televote is going to come through for somebody who captures the imagination of the audience on the night. The two that I think will do that are Spain and Norway. 2. Love your comments about Serbia entirely- and it is amazing. It gets better and better with each viewing. This is why we love eurovision.
@@seansean8980 I agree the Ukraine has a good chance. Italy is handicapped by the ear piercingly screechy chorus: you find it beautiful: it sets me off like nails down a blackboard. A lot of people are going to feel the same.
@@seansean8980 One of the things its easy to forget is that at the end the televote is only partially made up of Eurovision fans: there are a lot of casual viewers on Saturday who tend to go for different songs to the juries and to your average Eurovision fan. They aren’t going to go for a song like Brividi when Chanel is death dropping, Norway is crazy or Ukraine are bravee lads from Ukraine. (My other choice would be Finland - there will be a lot. Of televote love for them.)

I have around 7-8 countries currently challenging to get into the top 10, plus there are songs way down that I think could even jump upwards with amazing staging.

That song is unreal hard to perform. The flat chorus gets it out of my top 3 Georgia 🇬🇪 7 - I don't care if I'm biased, I'm entitled to be biased Iceland 🇮🇸 8 - I just love it, very elvish Estonia 🇪🇪 9 - I've been bred on an Enio Morricone diet and this is just good and effective and he's hot Belgium 🇧🇪 10 - Timberlake always been my guilty pleasure and this is indeed another guilty pleasure. It's very Belgian and I like that they're true to themselves every year. After that there's a mix of Poland 🇵🇱, which just didn't stick the test of time with me but did grab me initially a lot, Moldova 🇲🇩, gypsy music is live music so looking forward to it, Romania 🇷🇴 - loving the manele tones in the Spanish background, Ireland 🇮🇪 decent song which is slept on, Czech Republic which is just victim of coming out too early and Montenegro 🇲🇪 which made the usual mistake of singing a balkans song in English but would have been awesome in the language

@@damirdominkovic I think Sweden will win. They're always pretty close to the top just based on jury votes and this year it seems people are liking it as well so I think it'll win.
@@whereIstood0705 I'm very confident it won't. I'm sure it's not even gonna end up in top5. There's too many ballads and Sweden doesn't stick out. It's a good song but it doesn't have the oomph of Italy or Netherlands. I wouldn't mind if Sweden won but I'm just trying to be realistic.
@@whereIstood0705 I also forgot to mention that Sweden with exception of 2018 and last year came top 10 in televote every other time since they failed to qualify. But people seem to ignore that and just focus on jury vote because Sweden always comes very high with the juries.
Oh my god! Finally someone who agrees with me on Italy! Don't get me wrong, it's a good song. I like it. But how people are putting it in their top 5s is a mystery to me.
Everyone has different tastes I think and if some people "resonated" more with it or identified more with it I don't think we should judge each other like it's my number 1 song this year and I expect people not to see me as a mystery just because I'm more into meaningful ballads than I am for pop/rock. We all have a different ranking so let's not start to compare and like the songs we want!

Is it true the EBU has asked them to remove some of backing track and sing more live? Apparently the "backing vocals" are 85% of the track, and only 15% is sung into the mic? Someone told me that, and was wondering if you could clarify?

My non-live top 10 would be different to my live top 10, since some of these, especially the EDM songs like Austria and Czech Republic. Right now, based on the _studio_ versions, here is my top 10: 10) Spain 9) Armenia 8) Georgia 7) Estonia 6) Czech Republic 5) France 4) Poland 3) United Kingdom - Best UK entry in years! Deserves top 5 on the night and I am PROUD of it! 2) Norway - Honestly Televote winner but also has Jury appeal in the production value and has multiple 'Eurovision moments' 1) *Portugal* - Incredibly sad and made me cry twice, the only entry to do this this year and for that, it deserves the number one spot! Maro's grandfather would be proud! However, based on the _live_ versions seen at Israel Calling, Madrid and Barcelona, from what i've seen some of these will be pulled back, others pulled forwards. Armenia and Spain would probably go up a significant number of places whereas Czech Republic would go out of my top 10 and France down a few places. Austria was in my top 10 but for some reason they've been forced out and I think based on their live performances they will be pulled much further back (they'd be lowest top 15). I think Spain and in particular, *Armenia* will end up in my final top 10. Rosa Linn sounds SIGNIFICANTLY better than most of the performers this year live. Georgia doesn't look too good live as well. Stay tuned as our top 10s could ALL change with the live performances, namely the live voices.
My top 5 #5 Australia - it's a strong and powerful ballad that i connect with, what an amazing voice. #4 Sweden - my home country and i really feel for the first time in a really long while we have a real chance to win, i am so satisfied we're finally sending something else than a man singing a pop song. #3 France - really unexpected from France, even to participate in eurovision, i think there's a huge potential to grab lots of televotes. #2 Iceland - the biggest reason why this moved down as my runner-up is the listenability compared to Norway, i don't find it as enjoyable listening to it. The song still is absolutely gorgeous imo, same with the icelandic language, what sets this apart from the other slow songs is the dark and mysterious atmosphere. #1 Norway - pretty much everything you said about Norway in the video: a brilliant entry with lots of qualities and as i said has a better listenability than Iceland, i see this as a very likely televote winner.
All Sweden's songs sound like they are from 10-20 years ago every year. I know they are well produced but they are so dull. I can't believe Heroes and Take me to your heaven were winners.
Subwoolfer has stayed pretty consistent as your number 1 - I love that! As you already know, I'm Norwegian and voted for them and I'm definitely 100% behind our entry this year so they are at the top of my list too. I love that you have Serbia up there as well - that one has grown a lot on me and I think Konstrakta could be a potential surprise winner. I think we are getting a 'shocker' this year where a fan favorite isn't the winner, and Serbia is one of those entries for me that could go down well. Also refreshing to see some others not ranking Sweden at the very top. I really like Cornelia, but the song is very meh for me. Though an authentic performance, for me the song and staging is quite forgettable. I'll be super happy for Sweden if they do win, but I'm not on the hype-train.
I respect that Norway uses full televote in the MGP but I simply can't understand how this could 've won, especially over Elsie's song. I don't even find it bad , i just find it disgraceful how much computer generated sounds it has. Eurovision should have stricter rules related to what "live" performance means. There is basically little to none live singing into this song. God I hate how many people actually like this song uff
@@EurovisionESC They performed live in MGP. Despite what you think - these are two very competent singers and performers. One of them has a voice that is known to sound 'autotuned' 🙂 You don't have to like the song at all, but you're also discrediting with misinformation here just a FYI. Elsie's song was fine. It didn't win because the emotion of the song didn't come across in the live performance, and the staging wasn't engaging at all. She would have gotten lost in Eurovision.... While Subwoolfer has already engaged a lot of people and are likely to win the televote.

Wow great job Tom, you were very articulate about your likes and dislikes or reservations and I am more or less on the same wavelength with you, doesnt it feel gratifying when you share the same opinion with others? (I always find it a bit weird but i guess it’s human nature!). Having said that, my deviations: Germany and San Marino are a bit higher,particularly Germany. To my own dismay i haven’t been that disinterested about Italy for quite a long time and it’s the song itself, if that doesn’t work for me then that’s it. Same for Spain. Sweden, surprisingly enough for me, is quite higher,top 5 i think 🤔. France just doesn’t do it for me, maybe because i was sooo rooting for Soa’s ‘Seule’ in the NF. Now (drums..!) the gap widens with Czechia and Poland, the latter is better but it just doesn’t do anything for me, and finally 🤭😱 Norway is my pet hate this year, i can see the novelty but again, like Sheldon sings, we are not the same. PS Konstrakta is a grower, top 10 maybe, but boy i was so disappointed when it won the NF, maybe because i fell in love with two other songs from Serbia’s NF this year, probably my top 2 of this year’s overall songs (Sara Jo’s Muskarcina and Zoe Kida’s Bejbi, wow, true gems, especially Sara Jo, i think ESC is really missing out on her performance and song 😭). I'm going to comment my updated thoughts cause some random digital media company decided to take down my video. #40 - This is the only song on this years list that is a genuinely miserable listening experience. Who wants this from Eurovision? #39 - I have a bias against never grow up songs. They range for me from "I now hate this singer" to slightly tacky and the only one whose ever hit slightly tacky is Taylor Swift. It's middle aged mom cry bait pure and simple. #38 - This song is snazzy and jazzy but I get what you're saying. I think they could have done with another year and I hope they do come back again even it's not for a few years. #37 - I love this one. Fun , electric and just a great time. It does sound like it could be in a Barbie movie and I've accepted it's unlikely to do well but I hope if nothing else it opens the door for more girl groups at Eurovision. #36 - The singer sells it flawlessly and it's cutting/strong without being melodramatic. This song reportedly was plagued with rewrites and you cannot tell. #35 - For me I can maybe get on board if you're on board with what you're singing and these guys definitely are. But it's a bit of a clunker. #34 - This song lives , dies and bets its mortgage on you loving ABBA. If you told someone with an average knowledge of ABBA's discography that this was an old unreleased song of theirs they'd probably believe you. I don't love ABBA #33 - This is the generic self love song it seems like every artist is required to make at some point. I think Malta is going to be shocked when they don't do well but hopefully it teaches them a lesson. Also I've never heard "I am what I am" in any understandable context. It's always someone justifying their scumbaggery - "you cheated on me" "I am what I am" #32 - I get the vibe that this singer could do better. Like it's cute and decent and pretty. But I get the vibe she could be good. #31 - Going to be brilliant on stage but I do wonder if A) This is too sexual for Eurovision (I know I'm about to be a hypocrite.) and B) If Italy hadn't won in 2021 would this be their entry? I'd put a decent chunk of money on no. #30 - It's grown on me a bit but like you , I don't see the fuss. #29 - This is a shrinker. The performance will be fun but would I listen to this on a regular basis? No. #28 - Ugh I feel bad because the melody is beautiful but the lyrics are clunky and I think its because the writers don't have the best grasp on English (which is understandable English is the toughest language to learn according to many people who've learnt it). And unfortunately it's just noticeable enough to be distracting. #27 - This is so fun. It's catchy and unique and it's funny but it's not too random. Also love how they don't rely on shock humor with the concept but inject their own fun into it. #26 - This song's gone down like a cup of cold sick with the Eurovision community and I don't get it. It's catchy and whatever choreography they do will be excellent. I think this songs rough reception is prove the "YASSSS QUEEN SLAY" genre is dying. #25 - This song should hit harder on stage than it does in that performance. In that performance it hits about as hard as pool noodle. I hope it's better on the day. #24 - This song makes me nervous. If it goes well on stage it will be killer and get a high placement. But I don't know how much is translatable to the stage under Eurovision rules. #23 - If you're not going to go back to Eurovision with a bang this is a great whisper. The subject matter is relatable but not overdone. It's going to be passed over but man that sucks. #22 - Again this one isn't clicking with me like some people but I like the mannerisms she does when she performs it. Adds to the drunk sad girl vibes. #21- It feels a little bit dated compared to the other pop style entries cause of the justin timberlake style but he sells it well. #20 - This is what happens when the weird girl in high school goes onto make music and I really enjoy it. She's in her own world and I think it's a great world. #19 - Yes it's not reinventing the wheel in terms of song content but man she kills the performance and I think it's a strong winner. I hope they bring the water effect on stage but only if it's safe. #18 - This is going to be so stunning on stage. This is the closest I've come to wanting to go to a rave (still don't though lol). #17 - This song is so stunning and beautiful and the phrase Saudade which translates to missing something you can't get back is such a perfect metaphor for grief. #16 - This one's just not my thing. Pure and Simple. #15 - People are sleeping on my girl Brooke. This is such a bop and with the sleepover staging it's going to be so killer on stage. This is a dark horse. #14 - It's pretty but he does this thing (and as a former debate kid it makes me wonder if he is a former debate kid/theatre kid) where he's trying to project as far as possible but he doesn't need to and it makes his voice sound strained. #13 - This one I don't get. It's really melodramatic and the "if I can't have no one else can" of the lyrics is frankly creepy. #12 - This song is so killer and is going to be a stunning opener that everyone's gonna remember forever. Tirana 2023? #11 - I feel like everyone whose saying this could win is peeing on my leg and telling me it's raining. England has the best musical resources in the competition this should not be their ceiling. It's not even the best version of Spaceman in this years competition because that's Armenia's and it's being paid dust. If this wins it's because England made it . #10 - This one's a wacky one to judge. Because there's not much of note here but it's not bad it's just like giving me a plate and asking me to judge it. The good news for Georgia though is I think lots of people feel the same so it can only go up from here. #9 - This is a good bit of EDMish and I love some good EDMish so I'm on board even though I ranked it like #19. #8 - This one makes me sad. Not because the songs sad but because if Aviici had survived this would have been his Eurovision entry and as someone who was 10-16 at the height of his career his music was the soundtrack of my life during those years. RIP Aviici gone too soon. #7 - Really? This ones degraded on me fast (I didn't even like it that much to begin with). It sounds like a telenovela intro and not a particularly interesting one. #6 - This one really tears me in half. Because it's a fun eclectic entry but it's tainted by the fact I'm anxious it's going to be pity voted which A) They deserve to win off their own merit and B) They likely can't afford to host next year and that's not even considering if they'll be in a physical place to host Eurovision. #5 - This one's so pretty. The siren vibes are unique and gorgeous. I am curious what they will do for staging though. #4 - It's the best of the ballads for sure. Also the "who would want to be king" line feels poignant. #3 - It reminds me of that 2016-2018 super vibey low energy pop that was all on the radio and I think if it had competed in 2016 it probably would have won or done really well but we've moved on I think. For that genre it's fairly good though. #2 - This is going to go over 80% of peoples heads (it did on mine at first listen) and that SUCKS EGGS. #1 - Super fun and wacky. It can't win (at least not at a modern Eurovision) but man it'll be a fun ride regardless of how long it lasts.

I feel the staging concept now is very kareoke styling. I want them to elevate it A LOT 12 - I would fricking love Tirana at some point, but i dont think its this year. Although at least they shouldnt get drawn 2nd again this year 11 - yea people exaggerate the UK cos theyre trying to be encouraging. Such a thoughtful video. I disagree with many of your top 10, but I do like how you explain how each song impacts you. My top 3 are 1. Czech Republic, 2. Netherlands 3. Belguim. My bottom 3 are 38. Australia, 39 Denmark and 40. San Marino...Also, for what it's worth, I think Switzerlands staging will really change a lot of people's mind when they see it at Turin. Maybe it won't be in your top 10 Tom, but I think you'll change when you see it. I rarely comment, but always watch and enjoy your vids.
Excellent post and we do agree on a lot, but unlike last year where we had the same top 2 now we only share four songs in our top 10 and in different places... Norway, Netherlands, Poland and Cyprus. Brilliant how in the end small things in the "argumentation" work out quite differently in one's personal taste. I've got Serbia, Azerbaijan and Georgia a lot lower than you, and especially Portugal, Italy and Iceland a lot higher, but otherwise we agree on quite a few things.

I love this; such a well-reasoned ranking. If I comment on how wildly it differs from my own ranking, this'll end up being just as long. I just wanted to say Roxen last year was my biggest surprise last year. I didnt connect with it all pre-Rotterdam but her interview with Nikki finally made the penny drop and it all suddenly made so much more sense (even the staging concept) so that I was really disappointed it didnt qualify.
Yea Roxen was my number 2 last year so that was my biggest disappointment as well. I saw her rehearsal though so I knew it was coming. They should have adapted the staging to her capabilities, but it just seemed like there was no room for compromise
Great rundown Tom 😀 Completely concur with you on Italy, Sweden & Norway. I just find Italy a bit dull and the facial contortions are a bit of a turn off. The first time I heard Sweden I thought she was singing a bit out of sync with the backing track and I just havent been unable to ‘unhear’ that. I never tire of watching Subwoolfer, I too am obsessed with it 😀 (ps I hope and think that the UK will do even better than your top 10 ambition - I am one of the UK-ers ready to stomp off in the huff if it doesnt do top 10 at least 😉😂).

Hi Tom, finally the video I've been waiting for. 31st-40th: I'd swap Switzerland and Germany. Slovenia I like because it reminds me of city pop. The rest I agree. 21st-30th: surprised at 30th yes it's in my top 10. I respect that you don't like and don't connect with your no. 38, Tom, but I think it's a bit unfair to use the term "amateur" about this particular song. Yes, I realize you're referring to the stage performance, but musically and composition-wise it's easily one of the most professionally crafted songs which shows unexpectedly high musical intelligence/understanding. But well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and it sits around second/third place in my ranking (which is why I feel the urge to defend it 😁). I completely agree with Italy. In fact its almost the same place as mine. What i dont understand is ur nr1. For me there is not enough singing,not enough showing a vocals in that song to be in top 10,but its fun and unusual,but nothing else.
yea i guess it depends what you enjoy listening to. I guess the vocals arent as important for me personally, im more interesting in the melody and how the song makes me feel.
I'm not in love with Austria either although I like it more than I did. It started off as my worst one. I'm not blown away by Sweden either but I hope and do think they will be rewarded for stepping out of their comfort zone.

well not exactly. at least i actually downloaded it. I would never even consider downloading Switzerland. Plus for me its more than just the song, its also the backstory for the whole entry - the performer, staging, the country's "story" in Eurovision over the last few years and how their entry fits in - the entire feeling that all aspects of the entry gives me I would on reflection maybe move it down 1-2 places. ive realised i like N Mac more than 36th as i had it in my head after editing this. Id prob move San Marino ahead of Italy too
@@ESCTom Yeah N Mac started out an early favourite of mine on the days when there were only about 10 songs. But something happened to knock it from its place of honour. I don’t know if it’s that I’d heard it too much or if I’d been influenced by others opinions about it. It does seem a bit underrated although, I admit that it does suffer from a few corny lyrics in places and is a bit too repetitive. They seem to be its biggest drawbacks.
I appreciate that you put Georgia above Italy, and by a large margin! Made my day 😻 Brividi does nothing for me. And I’m quite digging Circus Mircus. Sadly, Norway does absolutely nothing for me either 😑 I feel cringy about it.

1. Norway...I do think it could win and this is why. This year there are a lot of songs that are jury bait- artistically strong songs sung well. The problem is that those sorts of songs dont have a huge amount of televote appeal and so I think the jury votes will be pretty evenly spread and we will be left with a close race. I think v because there are a lot of similar songs, the televote is going to come through for somebody who captures the imagination of the audience on the night. The two that I think will do that are Spain and Norway.
2. Love your comments about Serbia entirely- and it is amazing. It gets better and better with each viewing. This is why we love eurovision.
Agree with your comments however there are only two countries that can win this : the Ukraine or Italy.

@@seansean8980 One of the things its easy to forget is that at the end the televote is only partially made up of Eurovision fans: there are a lot of casual viewers on Saturday who tend to go for different songs to the juries and to your average Eurovision fan. They aren’t going to go for a song like Brividi when Chanel is death dropping, Norway is crazy or Ukraine are bravee lads from Ukraine. (My other choice would be Finland - there will be a lot. Of televote love for them.)

Yea this season has a lot of strong stuff. I have around 7-8 countries currently challenging to get into the top 10, plus there are songs way down that I think could even jump upwards with amazing staging.

After that there's a mix of Poland 🇵🇱, which just didn't stick the test of time with me but did grab me initially a lot, Moldova 🇲🇩, gypsy music is live music so looking forward to it, Romania 🇷🇴 - loving the manele tones in the Spanish background, Ireland 🇮🇪 decent song which is slept on, Czech Republic which is just victim of coming out too early and Montenegro 🇲🇪 which made the usual mistake of singing a balkans song in English but would have been awesome in the language

@@whereIstood0705 I'm very confident it won't. I'm sure it's not even gonna end up in top5. There's too many ballads and Sweden doesn't stick out. It's a good song but it doesn't have the oomph of Italy or Netherlands. I wouldn't mind if Sweden won but I'm just trying to be realistic.
@@whereIstood0705 I also forgot to mention that Sweden with exception of 2018 and last year came top 10 in televote every other time since they failed to qualify. But people seem to ignore that and just focus on jury vote because Sweden always comes very high with the juries.
Oh my god! Finally someone who agrees with me on Italy! Don't get me wrong, it's a good song. I like it. But how people are putting it in their top 5s is a mystery to me.
Everyone has different tastes I think and if some people "resonated" more with it or identified more with it I don't think we should judge each other like it's my number 1 song this year and I expect people not to see me as a mystery just because I'm more into meaningful ballads than I am for pop/rock. We all have a different ranking so let's not start to compare and like the songs we want!

2) Norway - Honestly Televote winner but also has Jury appeal in the production value and has multiple 'Eurovision moments'
1) *Portugal* - Incredibly sad and made me cry twice, the only entry to do this this year and for that, it deserves the number one spot! Maro's grandfather would be proud!
However, based on the _live_ versions seen at Israel Calling, Madrid and Barcelona, from what i've seen some of these will be pulled back, others pulled forwards. Armenia and Spain would probably go up a significant number of places whereas Czech Republic would go out of my top 10 and France down a few places. Austria was in my top 10 but for some reason they've been forced out and I think based on their live performances they will be pulled much further back (they'd be lowest top 15). I think Spain and in particular, *Armenia* will end up in my final top 10. Rosa Linn sounds SIGNIFICANTLY better than most of the performers this year live. Georgia doesn't look too good live as well. Stay tuned as our top 10s could ALL change with the live performances, namely the live voices.

#5 Australia - it's a strong and powerful ballad that i connect with, what an amazing voice.
#4 Sweden - my home country and i really feel for the first time in a really long while we have a real chance to win, i am so satisfied we're finally sending something else than a man singing a pop song.
#3 France - really unexpected from France, even to participate in eurovision, i think there's a huge potential to grab lots of televotes.
#2 Iceland - the biggest reason why this moved down as my runner-up is the listenability compared to Norway, i don't find it as enjoyable listening to it. The song still is absolutely gorgeous imo, same with the icelandic language, what sets this apart from the other slow songs is the dark and mysterious atmosphere.
#1 Norway - pretty much everything you said about Norway in the video: a brilliant entry with lots of qualities and as i said has a better listenability than Iceland, i see this as a very likely televote winner.
All Sweden's songs sound like they are from 10-20 years ago every year. I know they are well produced but they are so dull. I can't believe Heroes and Take me to your heaven were winners.

Subwoolfer has stayed pretty consistent as your number 1 - I love that! As you already know, I'm Norwegian and voted for them and I'm definitely 100% behind our entry this year so they are at the top of my list too. I love that you have Serbia up there as well - that one has grown a lot on me and I think Konstrakta could be a potential surprise winner. I think we are getting a 'shocker' this year where a fan favorite isn't the winner, and Serbia is one of those entries for me that could go down well.
Also refreshing to see some others not ranking Sweden at the very top. I really like Cornelia, but the song is very meh for me. Though an authentic performance, for me the song and staging is quite forgettable. I'll be super happy for Sweden if they do win, but I'm not on the hype-train.
I respect that Norway uses full televote in the MGP but I simply can't understand how this could 've won, especially over Elsie's song. I don't even find it bad , i just find it disgraceful how much computer generated sounds it has. Eurovision should have stricter rules related to what "live" performance means. There is basically little to none live singing into this song. God I hate how many people actually like this song uff
@@EurovisionESC They performed live in MGP. Despite what you think - these are two very competent singers and performers. One of them has a voice that is known to sound 'autotuned' 🙂 You don't have to like the song at all, but you're also discrediting with misinformation here just a FYI.
Elsie's song was fine. It didn't win because the emotion of the song didn't come across in the live performance, and the staging wasn't engaging at all. She would have gotten lost in Eurovision.... While Subwoolfer has already engaged a lot of people and are likely to win the televote.
The funniest part is that Tom is massively biased towards Sweden usually 😂 he'd forgive them murder

Wow great job Tom, you were very articulate about your likes and dislikes or reservations and I am more or less on the same wavelength with you, doesnt it feel gratifying when you share the same opinion with others? (I always find it a bit weird but i guess it’s human nature!). Having said that, my deviations: Germany and San Marino are a bit higher,particularly Germany. To my own dismay i haven’t been that disinterested about Italy for quite a long time and it’s the song itself, if that doesn’t work for me then that’s it. Same for Spain. Sweden, surprisingly enough for me, is quite higher,top 5 i think 🤔. France just doesn’t do it for me, maybe because i was sooo rooting for Soa’s ‘Seule’ in the NF. Now (drums..!) the gap widens with Czechia and Poland, the latter is better but it just doesn’t do anything for me, and finally 🤭😱 Norway is my pet hate this year, i can see the novelty but again, like Sheldon sings, we are not the same. PS Konstrakta is a grower, top 10 maybe, but boy i was so disappointed when it won the NF, maybe because i fell in love with two other songs from Serbia’s NF this year, probably my top 2 of this year’s overall songs (Sara Jo’s Muskarcina and Zoe Kida’s Bejbi, wow, true gems, especially Sara Jo, i think ESC is really missing out on her performance and song 😭). #40 - This is the only song on this years list that is a genuinely miserable listening experience. Who wants this from Eurovision?
#39 - I have a bias against never grow up songs. They range for me from "I now hate this singer" to slightly tacky and the only one whose ever hit slightly tacky is Taylor Swift. It's middle aged mom cry bait pure and simple.
#38 - This song is snazzy and jazzy but I get what you're saying. I think they could have done with another year and I hope they do come back again even it's not for a few years.
#37 - I love this one. Fun , electric and just a great time. It does sound like it could be in a Barbie movie and I've accepted it's unlikely to do well but I hope if nothing else it opens the door for more girl groups at Eurovision.
#36 - The singer sells it flawlessly and it's cutting/strong without being melodramatic. This song reportedly was plagued with rewrites and you cannot tell.
#35 - For me I can maybe get on board if you're on board with what you're singing and these guys definitely are. But it's a bit of a clunker.
#34 - This song lives , dies and bets its mortgage on you loving ABBA. If you told someone with an average knowledge of ABBA's discography that this was an old unreleased song of theirs they'd probably believe you. I don't love ABBA
#33 - This is the generic self love song it seems like every artist is required to make at some point. I think Malta is going to be shocked when they don't do well but hopefully it teaches them a lesson. Also I've never heard "I am what I am" in any understandable context. It's always someone justifying their scumbaggery - "you cheated on me" "I am what I am"
#32 - I get the vibe that this singer could do better. Like it's cute and decent and pretty. But I get the vibe she could be good.
#31 - Going to be brilliant on stage but I do wonder if A) This is too sexual for Eurovision (I know I'm about to be a hypocrite.) and B) If Italy hadn't won in 2021 would this be their entry? I'd put a decent chunk of money on no.
#30 - It's grown on me a bit but like you , I don't see the fuss.
#29 - This is a shrinker. The performance will be fun but would I listen to this on a regular basis? No.
#28 - Ugh I feel bad because the melody is beautiful but the lyrics are clunky and I think its because the writers don't have the best grasp on English (which is understandable English is the toughest language to learn according to many people who've learnt it). And unfortunately it's just noticeable enough to be distracting.
#27 - This is so fun. It's catchy and unique and it's funny but it's not too random. Also love how they don't rely on shock humor with the concept but inject their own fun into it.
#26 - This song's gone down like a cup of cold sick with the Eurovision community and I don't get it. It's catchy and whatever choreography they do will be excellent. I think this songs rough reception is prove the "YASSSS QUEEN SLAY" genre is dying.
#25 - This song should hit harder on stage than it does in that performance. In that performance it hits about as hard as pool noodle. I hope it's better on the day.
#24 - This song makes me nervous. If it goes well on stage it will be killer and get a high placement. But I don't know how much is translatable to the stage under Eurovision rules.
#23 - If you're not going to go back to Eurovision with a bang this is a great whisper. The subject matter is relatable but not overdone. It's going to be passed over but man that sucks.
#22 - Again this one isn't clicking with me like some people but I like the mannerisms she does when she performs it. Adds to the drunk sad girl vibes.
#21- It feels a little bit dated compared to the other pop style entries cause of the justin timberlake style but he sells it well.
#20 - This is what happens when the weird girl in high school goes onto make music and I really enjoy it. She's in her own world and I think it's a great world.
#19 - Yes it's not reinventing the wheel in terms of song content but man she kills the performance and I think it's a strong winner. I hope they bring the water effect on stage but only if it's safe.
#18 - This is going to be so stunning on stage. This is the closest I've come to wanting to go to a rave (still don't though lol).
#17 - This song is so stunning and beautiful and the phrase Saudade which translates to missing something you can't get back is such a perfect metaphor for grief.
#16 - This one's just not my thing. Pure and Simple.
#15 - People are sleeping on my girl Brooke. This is such a bop and with the sleepover staging it's going to be so killer on stage. This is a dark horse.
#14 - It's pretty but he does this thing (and as a former debate kid it makes me wonder if he is a former debate kid/theatre kid) where he's trying to project as far as possible but he doesn't need to and it makes his voice sound strained.
#13 - This one I don't get. It's really melodramatic and the "if I can't have no one else can" of the lyrics is frankly creepy.
#12 - This song is so killer and is going to be a stunning opener that everyone's gonna remember forever. Tirana 2023?
#11 - I feel like everyone whose saying this could win is peeing on my leg and telling me it's raining. England has the best musical resources in the competition this should not be their ceiling. It's not even the best version of Spaceman in this years competition because that's Armenia's and it's being paid dust. If this wins it's because England made it .
#10 - This one's a wacky one to judge. Because there's not much of note here but it's not bad it's just like giving me a plate and asking me to judge it. The good news for Georgia though is I think lots of people feel the same so it can only go up from here.
#9 - This is a good bit of EDMish and I love some good EDMish so I'm on board even though I ranked it like #19.
#8 - This one makes me sad. Not because the songs sad but because if Aviici had survived this would have been his Eurovision entry and as someone who was 10-16 at the height of his career his music was the soundtrack of my life during those years. RIP Aviici gone too soon.
#7 - Really? This ones degraded on me fast (I didn't even like it that much to begin with). It sounds like a telenovela intro and not a particularly interesting one.
#6 - This one really tears me in half. Because it's a fun eclectic entry but it's tainted by the fact I'm anxious it's going to be pity voted which A) They deserve to win off their own merit and B) They likely can't afford to host next year and that's not even considering if they'll be in a physical place to host Eurovision.
#5 - This one's so pretty. The siren vibes are unique and gorgeous. I am curious what they will do for staging though.
#4 - It's the best of the ballads for sure. Also the "who would want to be king" line feels poignant.
#3 - It reminds me of that 2016-2018 super vibey low energy pop that was all on the radio and I think if it had competed in 2016 it probably would have won or done really well but we've moved on I think. For that genre it's fairly good though.
#2 - This is going to go over 80% of peoples heads (it did on mine at first listen) and that SUCKS EGGS.

Such a thoughtful video. I disagree with many of your top 10, but I do like how you explain how each song impacts you. My top 3 are 1. Czech Republic, 2. Netherlands 3. Belguim. My bottom 3 are 38. Australia, 39 Denmark and 40. San Marino...Also, for what it's worth, I think Switzerlands staging will really change a lot of people's mind when they see it at Turin. Excellent post and we do agree on a lot, but unlike last year where we had the same top 2 now we only share four songs in our top 10 and in different places... Norway, Netherlands, Poland and Cyprus.
Brilliant how in the end small things in the "argumentation" work out quite differently in one's personal taste.
I've got Serbia, Azerbaijan and Georgia a lot lower than you, and especially Portugal, Italy and Iceland a lot higher, but otherwise we agree on quite a few things.
i think its a testament to how varied and strong this year is so there are so many different songs in everyones top 10
Great video Tom - my top 20 at the moment is as follows - 1 Romania, 2 North Macedonia, 3 Poland, 4 France, 5 Estonia, 6 Sweden, 7 Ireland, 8 Netherlands, 9 Austria, 10 Australia, 11 Italy, 12 Albania, 13 Lithuania, 14 Ukraine, 15 Germany, 16 United Kingdom, 17 Serbia, 18 Finland, 19 Greece, 20 Cyprus (Norway is at 25). So far be it from me to criticise anyone's rankings, but just a couple of things are jarring with me in your list - Malta above North Macedonia, or above anybody for that matter; Moldova above Italy; and Spain above Sweden and Romania; but that's what makes the Contest so fun and exciting, we all have different favourites!

Well interesting you mention N Mac cos you see i put those little 5 second clips in for each song and I had the weirdest collection of them stuck in my head after editing this: 🇲🇰🇧🇪🇩🇰🇷🇴 - so the list is changing constantly
re: italy i just really dont like it. i DLed it and everytime it would come on, even subconsciously it would just annoy me and i would skip. I just dont like how it sounds at all. whereas at least Moldova i can get through the whole song
Spain is high cos her performance is spectacular. as a song, I prefer Romania

I love this; such a well-reasoned ranking. If I comment on how wildly it differs from my own ranking, this'll end up being just as long. I just wanted to say Roxen last year was my biggest surprise last year. I didnt connect with it all pre-Rotterdam but her interview with Nikki finally made the penny drop and it all suddenly made so much more sense (even the staging concept) so that I was really disappointed it didnt qualify.
Yea Roxen was my number 2 last year so that was my biggest disappointment as well. I saw her rehearsal though so I knew it was coming. They should have adapted the staging to her capabilities, but it just seemed like there was no room for compromise
Great rundown Tom 😀 Completely concur with you on Italy, Sweden & Norway. I just find Italy a bit dull and the facial contortions are a bit of a turn off. The first time I heard Sweden I thought she was singing a bit out of sync with the backing track and I just havent been unable to ‘unhear’ that. I never tire of watching Subwoolfer, I too am obsessed with it 😀 (ps I hope and think that the UK will do even better than your top 10 ambition - I am one of the UK-ers ready to stomp off in the huff if it doesnt do top 10 at least 😉😂).
im totally in love with Sam, hes fecking brilliant. hes so lovely and positive. I think youll get the top 10, this DOESNT feel like Molly where it was hyped but honestly i thought that song was way overhyped and wasnt actually that good. i think it pretty much got the right placing.
BUT if UK doesnt get top 10, this is still a HUUUUUUUUGE improvement and something to be celebrated

31st-40th: I'd swap Switzerland and Germany. Slovenia I like because it reminds me of city pop. The rest I agree.
21st-30th: surprised at 30th yes it's in my top 10. Romania also in my top 10 lol, Armenia doesn't give me that Eurovision vibe and I don't like ballads so sorry Sweden
11th-20th: Finland, Lithuania and Spain just outside my top 20. I won't download Australia but I'll watch the performance, UK in my top 10 or 5 still can't decide
Top 10: Estonia not my cup of tea but Stefan is a tall glass of water 🤣 Ukraine I absolutely love the flute section, interesting top 2.

I mean that was almost perfection. I would be super happy if she won. I can't stop listening although I barely understand any words. I'm so happy that the Netherlands decided on a song in Dutch, reminded me of why I started loving Eurovision long time ago.
I respect that you don't like and don't connect with your no. 38, Tom, but I think it's a bit unfair to use the term "amateur" about this particular song. Yes, I realize you're referring to the stage performance, but musically and composition-wise it's easily one of the most professionally crafted songs which shows unexpectedly high musical intelligence/understanding. But well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, and it sits around second/third place in my ranking (which is why I feel the urge to defend it 😁). Disagreements aside, thanks for good Eurovision content as always.
Jérémie performed his song on the Voice a few days ago and wow I honestly think he has one of the best vocals this year.

I completely agree with Italy. In fact its almost the same place as mine. What i dont understand is ur nr1. For me there is not enough singing,not enough showing a vocals in that song to be in top 10,but its fun and unusual,but nothing else.
yea i guess it depends what you enjoy listening to. I guess the vocals arent as important for me personally, im more interesting in the melody and how the song makes me feel.
I'm not in love with Austria either although I like it more than I did. It started off as my worst one. I'm not blown away by Sweden either but I hope and do think they will be rewarded for stepping out of their comfort zone.

well not exactly. at least i actually downloaded it. I would never even consider downloading Switzerland. Plus for me its more than just the song, its also the backstory for the whole entry - the performer, staging, the country's "story" in Eurovision over the last few years and how their entry fits in - the entire feeling that all aspects of the entry gives me
I would on reflection maybe move it down 1-2 places. ive realised i like N Mac more than 36th as i had it in my head after editing this. Id prob move San Marino ahead of Italy too
@@ESCTom Yeah N Mac started out an early favourite of mine on the days when there were only about 10 songs.
But something happened to knock it from its place of honour.
I don’t know if it’s that I’d heard it too much or if I’d been influenced by others opinions about it.
It does seem a bit underrated although, I admit that it does suffer from a few corny lyrics in places and is a bit too repetitive.
They seem to be its biggest drawbacks.
I appreciate that you put Georgia above Italy, and by a large margin! Made my day 😻
