In my 20's I was overseas in the service so after I was finally out my wife threw me a 30th birthday surprise party. It was indeed a "I made it" type of moment. You have a great perspective.

Foreign families do not tend to produce children with better work ethics because they 'hit their kids', that is an unfortunate stereotype -- although it might be anecdotally true. It's because the parents themselves tend to have better work ethics, since foreign families tend to be of lower socioeconomic class. Which also means the children are often forced to help work when they're old enough to do so.
Right, my parents never hit me, they just guilted me in multiple languages leaving me with a need to make them happy at the cost of my own happiness. No bigs.
If you're over 30 and you are of immigrant parents and/or lower socioeconomic classes, if you were either getting hit by your parents or knew kids that were. Our parents generation was the one that was phasing those practices out, so there were many that still practiced it
