hearing mitski describe the song as sort of a "patriarchal voice" in your head is so interesting, kind of feels similar to the themes in Real Men from Lush. this is one of my fav songs off the album, and i love that she specified its not really about a "bad man" but moreso embodying the real toxic mindset. love these videos sm!
I hope she's not worried about these videos being too long for our sake, bc I'm sure the majority of us could literally watch a 4hr documentary about this album and still want more
easily one of my favs because of the dog and outdoor sounds. its so unique and special to me. i really feel the care and emotion that went into creating this song.
The use of dog sounds reminded me a lot of Fiona Apple on her last album "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" which has some dog barking sounds in a couple of tracks.
Oh my God when I first listened to this song I found myself crying and I couldn't really understand exactly why. Since it was my first listen I hadn't grasped much of the intention behind the lyrics and music yet, but it was so impactful lyrically and sonically. The explanation behind the song and the patriarchal voice in one's head tied everything together so ingeniously. The way the storytelling, the choral singers, bug sounds, barking, and that final false cry all comes together is so so beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us, Mitski ❤
this song (one of my faves) transitions perfectly with Hard times by Ethel Cain and I'm UNWELL. The dogs in the end are such an amazing idea and this whole explenatory video is as well.
I love the dog sounds and the night ambience, it brings me back to the line "I'll meet judgement by the hounds". The whole song had me floored as a man myself
i absolutely adore the choir in “im your man”, it really brings the whole song together, and i find it so moving!!! choral pieces always make my heart swell and you wrote it so beautifully, and knowing it’s significance only makes it more impactful. the dogs barking and the ambient outdoor sounds are so sick too, it was such a cool experience listening for the first time, especially with the toad scream at the end!!! definitely one of my favourites off the album, this was so interesting to watch! :’)
seriously, i love all of the songs from mitski. she inspired me to get into poetry. i am obsessed with these behind the songs videos! -also this song is so relatable! i really do feel like i have a man in my head!!
Throughout my years, I have felt I have had an inner matriarch within me instead, telling me she is my woman. Truly wonderful, Mitski. To me, it just sounds natural. A genuine integration of the process of the shadow. The big and small, the male and female aspects. The anima and animus. To me, this was too short! One does not have to excuse oneself when you explain your inner world. I could sit for hours talking about the creative process and transformation in art or creations. Also, one can never have too much tea.
I love this song from you so much. It's one of the few songs that always makes me cry when I hear it. Specifically when the barking dogs come in. My read on it personally (I know this isn't correct obviously) is it's about a person in a relationship who inevitably hurts the other person, knows they hurt the other person, is so hopelessly sorry that they hurt the other person, and knows that one day they're either going to abandon the other person in one final act of betrayal, or the other person is going to snap and tear them apart. And when that latter one happens, they won't fight back or resist because they know they deserve it. When the dogs come barking, I picture two different things at once. The first is the person leaving and the dogs barking desperately for the person to come back and not abandon them. The second is the dogs all turning on this person and mauling them, completely tearing them apart against the backdrop of a setting sun. I kind of picture the whole thing as a Western setting too. I interpret the dogs as getting either more and more desperate as the barking goes on, or as them getting more and more frenzied. And the choir comes across to me as the melancholic howling of the dogs, singing like angels on earth in their hurt and sense of betrayal. (The "you're an angel I'm a dog" and "you believe me like a god" lines make that connection stronger for me) Like I say, I know this is incorrect, but the song touches my heart and this is what it conjures for me. I don't know why I felt the need to express all of this, but I guess I just in a nutshell wanna say, thank you for making something that's so touching and sad to me. My interpretation may not be correct, but it really does mean quite a bit to me anyway. Enough that I went and started a short story inspired by it.
i always feel seen in mitski’s music. and how she describes this man in her head puts into words what i go through. thank you mitski. also the videos are NEVER too long. i wish they were longer.
I love these pre-concert-lecture style videos so much. I hope you will do one for "The Deal," which might be the best song on your stellar album; it may be the best thing you have ever written. I was awestruck the first time I heard it. Thank you for sharing your art!
"I'm Your Man" is definitely one of my favourite tracks on the album (although I love all of the songs, of course!) I really relate to the masculine voice in the back of your head too, I think it was a nice idea to give that voice a song:) also, I love that she gave a shout-out to the Folwer frog!!
why is this so relatable. my mind is so damaged whenever i think of the most wholesome or innocent thing or do it this voice or thought in my head of a man or just the society of men is yelling something disgusting over me or ruining that innocent thing and i can never complete what i’ve done because i know men are really like that.
I want to cry in your arms so bad, like idk how to say it without sounding weird but part of me wants to break down in your arms because you’d understand why it hurts, and why sometimes a hug heals so much
This is my favourite song on the album, it felt like a religious experience. Glad to know that mitski agrees that the dog barks and night sounds (and the scream at the end omg) are the best part!! What a phenomenal song I adore it
This song resonated with me so deeply, and when you said that the animal sound at the end is a type of toad, my heart dropped- frogs and toads are my favorite animals
this song is pure artistic genius also i love how she decided to take this approach of "let's approach this toxic part of ourselves with curiosity" with roots in buddhism bc that's basically the same approach that internal family systems therapy, which is shown to be effective, takes to integrating and healing all parts of ourselves even the ones that hurt ourselves
Man, I really could listen to her explain for hours and hours. The public domain aspect of the sounds makes me chuckle, they sound amazing and I did figure it was a frog, but it was a TOAD! This track really does give off "hiding in a shed with a loaded gun and my darling while a mob is tracking me down in the South" vibes. I'm often torn about CONSUMING mitski rather than just appreciating that she's on Earth with me at the same time, but that appreciation obviously leaves a craving. Thanks to the crew and her manager for making this all possible, y'all are amazing.
@@Hannah-ck4wv Good also. Thanks for asking ! It a pleasure meeting you here , sorry if I am invading your privacy! You’re very stunning and gorgeous I do like to be friends with you on facebook if you mind ?
it's so cool to know what went on behind this song, it's probably my favorite one on the album! I remember when I heard the choir on my first listen and i literally got chills
Wow Mitski. You were finally coming back on tour and in Los Angeles. I waited for your presale and didn’t get any tickets then again this morning I set an alarm and was there before the que started waited over an hour to purchase your tickets and I still didn’t get any 😭😭 I’m so freaking disappointed and sad. Can you please stop being so popular so I could actually have a chance at seeing you live?? Thank you!!!
i think most ballads you hear own that acoustic guitar song and thats completly fine too, but is does take guts to be like 'yeah im gonna add a full choir and frog sounds because it sounds good to me'. reminds me of the decision to add people talking loudly to "thats our lamp". even if there is no coherent explanation as to why, it gives the song another layer that makes me imagine a scene in my head. your songs, especially in this album, really do have something cinema- like to them and i love it sm
Thank you for sharing this, it's really interesting. I think my favourite part of this song are the dog barks and the outdoor sounds too. I don't know about the screeming toad, I guess I'll have to listen to it again. 😅 Love you Mitski, really, thanks for sharing this kind of videos and making amazing music. ❤
