One of my great prizes I scored back when I was a kid was a 1974 Onyx Records LP of Bird with an octet from McShann's band in a series of radio transcriptions done for a local station in 1940! On side 2 was a recording done on a paper disc of Bird doing "Cherokee" in 1942. As for Eddie "Rubberlegs", well, just to hear a few sublime moments from Mr. Parker, you had to listen vocals that were...ah, the less said about them the better. And with the same group a session was done with Sarah Vaughan around the same time. You can find this on Amazon for $20 USD www.amazon.com/First-Recordings-Charlie-Parker/dp/B002HQJBQ4
GREAT BAND!
Such a terrific side ... and Charlie's genius was apparent this early.
