A lot of our (scandinavian? european? I'm Swedish myself) bathroom sinks have this problem - it seems to be the standard over here. My hands are constantly bumping into the back of the sink bowl while washing. A longer faucet would solve that, but they just aren't available it seems.
Yeah I thought the same thing. I put in a raise sink in my RV's bathroom and made the mistake of putting the faucet back too far. It works but it splashes water on my mirror all the time and then I got to clean it. They'll figure it out though. I'm sure that once they're out there, if Mads thinks it's an issue he'll fix it.
Ava’s sock drawer and Mad’s activity board-you guys are a perfect match. Also, this is the first cruising blog to mention medications and emergency medical supplies. Well done.
Ireland is opted out of Schengen and has long held ties with the US due to the irish connection so may have a visa waiver that applies for Ava whilst Mads can still stay there under freedom of movement from within the EU. Hello Ava and Mads Thanks for your time today Mads👍 We wish you all the best for the future🇩🇰🇺🇸❤️. Allready waiting for next sunday😁🛠 See you😄, Berit & Ole
Ava truly complements your videos! Love the vanity top and sink you built! Your door frame is excellent! Great job on getting the medicine and first aid box together. The two of you are masters!!!!
To attach the clutch with shorter bolts. Make the bottom piece of wood longer than the clutch. Make the top piece of wood the same size. Ensuring the upper wood is centered with the bottom wood. The bottom piece of wood, drill upward and countersink the bottom side and mount the bottom piece to the upper piece and the clutch so the bolt heads are flush with the bottom. Then put down on the boat deck, and with the outward longer flaps on both sides, bolt down through the deck.
I'm sure lots of folks have told you this, but from today, EU (apart from France) and US citizens can now enter the UK so long as they are fully vaccinated. Really hope that means you can stay together. Oh and Mads, create dust at your PERIL!! We're renovating a house at the moment and we spend MUCH time cleaning!! Greetings from the UK and hope to see you here soon!!

Usually watch you on my big screen TV and there's no way to comment so I had to switch to my phone since I haven't commented on your videos in a while. You've moved far past my level of expertise with epoxy and glass and electronics in pretty much everything else. But just because I haven't commented in a while doesn't mean that every Sunday if I have internet it's sail life day. You're an inspiration !
Nice work guys. Two options for the shelves in the V lockers. Thermo formed plastics you cut and use heat to bend then rivet or glue together. You can make very tight fitting shelves that are very thin so maximize space. Also can cut them so they allow reaching "in front of the transverse vertical parts so there is no hidden spaces. Can use net bags as well to coordinate what is stored so your not having to dump and sort then store all the time.
Getting closer! One recommendation for the meds/supplies: get a vacuum bag sealer that you use for food and make various smaller bags. Bandages, bandaids, etc., tend of oxidize over time and this helps a lot. Also, if the main bag gets doused you will have lots of watertight "go bags" inside. Tip: after sealing the bags, make a little cut in each so you can rip them open without a tool.
So a couple ideas for your organization, in the lockers where wood shelves won't fit, you could do a fabric shelf with it sandwiched between wood strips on either end. Also, for the plastic bins, if you can get it there, some shelf liners would reduce noise and keep them from sliding a bit. Some elastic straps could be utilized hold them in place too. See the link below for the shelf liner
Excellent progress kiddies! Ava, great drawer organizational skills. grab n go... nice. V berth storage could simply be pigeon holes say 7”x 7”, again, grab n go, maybe one of those shoe organizers OR better yet have hubby whip something up in the shop! Probably slap sumpin’ together under 12 hours lol! Thanks guys, love your show, btw the postit movements seem to be rt on schedule.😁

You could add a shelf in those forward lockers if the shelf was a bungie/cargo net that was screwed into the corners. That would give you a second level to work with.
@Senapspiser I like this too. Light weight, simple, easy to install, and cheap. Plus with the time crunch this can be done with little effort for the project.
Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so if for any reason you are not allowed in the UK, you can also reset your Schengen visa by staying in Ireland? Ireland is absolutely beautiful and the people are quite welcoming.
Suggestion for organizing large lockers is plastic contsiners. Label them and put a map of the inventory on the locker door. Because the lockers are odd shapes we use the odd shapes for seasonal clothing. Every inch of storage is valuable, so make sure the containers do not have wasted space.we also keep a master list in the main cabin so we can find stuff easily. Heavy stuff like tools get spread out all over, so you can see why the master list is so helpful. This way the boat trim is helped by spreading out heavy item that you do not use every day.
As someone who is an American and my wife now (then girlfriend)is from Poland, I also wanted to stay past my 90 shengen days. I contacted the polish embassy in Chicago about this issue mainly to inquire about a visa and the visa counselor told me that there is a verbal agreement from I believe 1992 that allows Americans to enter Poland for 90 days then leave the country for 1-2 days and re enter and my 90 day clock restarted. The caveat to this was I must leave Poland and go to a non shengen country directly from Poland and re enter Poland directly, not another shengen country. I did this once, when re entering I got a weird look from immigration, told him what the polish embassy visa counselor told me and even had his business card and they just stamped my passport. This was 2012 and I left to England for a weekend and returned. I did this only once because after that I had a legitimate visa for much longer stay. Something to look into, I know I had the same problem as you guys. Also Gdansk, Gdynia, and Sopot in Poland has a lot of marinas and I’m sure Poland is much cheaper as well.
Vacuum bags, vacuum bags! Fellow livaboard here in the Pacific Northwest and My fiancé has an impossible amount of clothes on our 46 sailboat. The only way to get it all in our storage area is with full length vacuum bags we ordered on Amazom. Also I noticed you had some clothes in some non insulated cabinets in the vee-berth and so be aware of mold! The vacuum bags solve that too. She keeps a few drawers and spaces for the everyday wear items though outside of the bags.
I live in Scotland, and heck even we don't know the rules! Just beware if your not already, that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have different rules when it comes to Covid, because you know, sense! Hope that you get it worked out and can start your trip, together, as planned!
for storage in the one compartment that you couldn't get a shelf installed.. try the "shoebox" sized containers similar to the larger ones you have on the bigger shelf spaces. that location looked like you'd be able to put 3 or 4 across, and maybe 3 or 4 tall....if you find some of the better ones that have latching lids, they'll keep things dry, are clear so you can see some idea of what's in there, and can pull out a couple without really disturbing the others much.....(labels on the end would go a long way too) They're just big enough you can put two pairs of jeans in them, or 3 or 4 tee-shirts, a week's worth of sox or a weeks worth of underwear. bulkier items like a sweatshirt might be single entries, but it deepends on how bulky they are..
Ava, the forward v-birth storage areas… put up shelving to the left and right of the entrance. With a small lip. Could have 4 spaces (2 per side) and a large middle with a tub you pull to access the others!
Love this channel even more, Ava fits right in and things are coming along great…thanks for sharing and will be praying for you two that it all works out…
love the Ikea idea but need to install a fiddle to hold hem in the back and have shelf room out front...love all your DIY jobs and I am also in the middle of a total gut job refit rite now and your videos give me ideas.. thank you guys!
My son is in Denmark right now and travel for him has been easier as he has had both jabs for C-19. Nonetheless - great progress on the boat this week. Tidy drawers etc and that door frame looks great. Agree with a commenter below, make a second red doohickey asap. Its a non standard part and you have that workshop right now. Alternators have a lot of force behind them and getting one of those made on your travels would be a pain the the behind! Thank you for the video.
For Ava's Visa issue I know of an American couple that purchased a boat in Greece and ran in similar visa issues because they couldn't leave due to the pandemic and had to stay in Greece for more than 90 days. Their RUclips channel name is Sailing Blackbird. I believe it is episode 10 in which they talk about their Visa issues as Americans in Europe. Maybe they can help you with Ava's issue. Good Luck!
Great video again. Hope you troubleshoot the visa problem. Mads, would be great if in the "five years restoration project" intro, you could include Ava also, helping you with the osmosis treatment. 😉
Instead of horizontal shelves in the forward lockers, you could make 1-2 vertical spacers and stack better vertically. Also - put the bigger items like pants sweaters and such in the lockers, and small items like t shirts underwear socks etc in the drawers. The bin system in the long term is spot on.
I have been watching your videos for years and love them! Suggestion: I have a great deal of experience with the Ikea bins and I used to use them in my woodworking shop for many years. Long story short: the bins are fine but the lids are eventually going to be a huge source of annoyance for you. I would suggest upgrading the bins to something that has a better lid (like rubbermaid if you can find them in the right size) and save yourself the grief at sea. For labels, I make paper labels on my printer and then run those labels through a laminating machine. The laminated label is then simply placed on the inside of the bin, held in place by the contents. That way, changing the label is as simple as swapping out the loose label, rather than having to peel an adhesive label off the side. It works very well.
@2:00 but... the engine compartment is clean and freshly painted... oh. ISWUDT. @15:10 Invest in some kind of bracket or a place to secure the ladder/engine access panel. Because other wise you will put it any old where that will damage the finish on your panels, and potentially become a hazard if you are troubleshooting the engine while rocking in heavy seas. Assuming you haven't thought of that.... which you probably have.
For the compartments where you can't fit shelves, if you can't fit horizontal dividers, you might want to try vertical dividers. That way you can fill it with things that stack, while still keeping divisions. Also, because the divisions are vertical and don't support weight, you can make them much thinner (so they take up less space).
Phew! Lots to think about. Volvo Penta do a kit for mounting a second alternator on the LHS (starboard) side of the engine. This is for the Mastervolt alternator but it then provides 12v and 24v supplies, you can then have a separate battery for the engine and generator - useful... Covid - in the UK we have a certificate system run under the NHS with the NHS app. Even as visitors you could register on this, other than that I don't see any problem, certainly in England at least. We are very tolerant of these situations, and I've met many different nationalities staying at the marina.
I’ll echo what others have said, ring those wedding bells earlier than expected. You can have a proper wedding with everyone at a later date. Best of luck to you both.
Regarding the issue with the motion of the plastic boxes. I have you considered attaching a lid on the shelf in some way and then just let the box stand in that lid. The boxes and their lids are constructed in such way that they are stackable, so it would certainly work. There is also some dohickeys at IKEA that is used for "locking" the lids in place, which are really good in cases where the boxes are a little overfilled and in which case the lid will just not stay in place 😉
Minute 6:55, you can always cut the shelf in two so it will fit through the door, in order to hold it you just need a perimetrical piece of wood all around and few screws, remember it won't be the strongest shelf of the world, but for clothing or no so heavy stuff would do
Tip for the locker: Split a fitting length of the shelf in half, join them together inside the locker. Considering that it is going to have personal items inside, it won't need to carry any weight.
for that tension arm you built---either make a copy or a template in case that one eventually breaks. Again --to cover all the "What Ifs" in cruising!?--------Mikey, Belfair, Wa, USA
Not exactly sure why you guys want to spend a winter in the UK or Ireland? Absolutely lovely places, don't get me wrong, my wife's from the UK and we've spent quite some time there. Love it. Never been to Ireland but everyone says it's magic. Can't help but think that spending a winter there trying to finish projects will be difficult? Quite wet and not warm😁 Go.to.Gibraltar! You can scoot between Portugal, Gib, Morocco and Spain, beating the 90 day rule and enjoying nice weather. The immigration rules are not likely to change neither in the UK nor Schengen for a long while, whilst the UK and the EU are bickering🙄 good luck to you, and safe sailing!
I would use bungee cords on the plastic baskets on the shelves to hold them in place and cut down on noise when at sea. You could also use metal or wooden rods that you could Fit into slots but would require measuring, more work and more noise.
I learn sooo much BOAT DIY from you! And you are such an inspiring couple! I am doing "Glorious Sanding" today and this was my reward and break! Thank you both!
I know it is probably already finished. But you could save a bunch of time just making a hinged door for that column of drawers in the v-berth. Just open the door and open whichever drawer you want. Solid, clean, simple, and easy to do. Just food for thought.
If I may suggest? Put the medical supplies into a traums bag (cordura camera bag) or a similar grab bag, so it literally be grabbed and taken to the injured, or grabbed and easily tied into the life raft in case of the worst. Or look into the organized medical bags that unzip and lay flat with many compartments all visible at once. Not cheap, but worth the money when you need to find or get things NOW.
If you are travelling to Denmark from England, Northern Ireland or Scotland you will need: A ‘special worthy purpose’ to enter (including to transit) A PCR test 72 hours prior to entry A test on arrival To self-isolate on arrival for 10 days (with the option to test to release after four days)
In V berth cabinets to increase storage above stored items Amazon has "storage nets" of many colors that are about two feet long that hold lots of stuff. By screwing in some cup hooks you can double storage. To keep plastic bins from sliding around use non skid mats under and perhaps a bungee cord across front to keep them in place when the boat is pitching. Doing a great job and the boat looks "VERY SPIFFY"
In our RV we use the "wal-mart" 3-drawer Sterelite brand plastic drawers in the cabinets to expand storage items higher, plus the clear drawers help to see what's inside, plus they have many different sizes to suit your cabinet sizes. They're stackable so you can add or remove layers to suit
disassemble the alternator, if you see the mounts are just that mounts and are really only just caps on the motor. Use the mounts that fit with the alternator you want.
I would suggest you go to the Isle of Man, it never joined the EU and is not effected by Brexit, as a visitor in Athena you can stay for up to 6 months at a time. It is in the middle between England and Ireland and very close to Scotland.
I think you may find for these purposes that time spent in IOM is the same as time spent in the UK as although they have their own immigration service it is highly entwined with the UK one as a dependency.
@@jimporter The Isle of Man is not, and never has been, part of the United Kingdom, nor is it part of the European Union. It is not represented at Westminster or in Brussels. The Island is a self-governing British Crown Dependency - as are Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands - with its own parliament, government and laws. I just want to add that the IOM is a Crown dependency and not a UK or British or English dependency, this basically means that the Queen is head of State (State of the IOM). You can read more here which explains better : commonslibrary.parliament.uk/%EF%BB%BFhow-autonomous-are-the-crown-dependencies/
@@maxnex7676 not quite sure why you wrote that answer. 1) I did not state that the IOM was in the U.K. in fact quite the opposite as I mentioned them separately. 2) I know it is a dependency hence why I said it was a dependency. 3) I also know they have their own government and again why I mentioned that they have their own immigration service. My point was that many of these things are linked because of their status ie IOM is not a recognised country and does not have it’s own embassies but is represented by U.K. embassies. Also from the article you referenced “Although self-governing, the UK Parliament can legislate: “for the Crown Dependencies in the areas of defence, nationality, citizenship, Succession to the Throne, extradition and broadcasting, by implication limiting the competence of the Island jurisdictions in these areas”” so not entirely self determining. The Crown in Crown Dependencies does not mean the Queen, as such although she is the head of state, it is the crown as in the U.K. government . What would have been more useful would have been to point out whether or not the limit on days spent in the territory count as days in the U.K. which was the point of my comment.
Hi Mads, Sorry to say but have another look at your Cabin Top Winch mounting ... your rope (Sheet) angle up to the winch should be 9 to 12 degrees otherwise your rope will bundle up on the winch drum. Cheers
Didn't Sailing Uma get a long visa for the EU for their year+ Norway trip? Maybe reach out to Kika and see what happened there. Of course, they are Canada and Haiti, so YMMV.
Each EU country can outside of the standard Schengen Tourist Visa offer long stay tourist visas, you need to apply for them within your country of residence in the embassy of the country you want to go. Plus the countries requirements of the stay. Very often minimum financial background for the duration of the stay und proof that you have a health insurance for this country of some sort. Norway is part of Schengen but not EU, they may very well offer these long stay tourist visas. Which I personally found out the hard way not many EU country offer easily. Getting such a visa needs time a lot of paper work. Not quickly to get.
@@MrThomast74 Yeah but they are a couple with one being from the home country and the other not. That probably changes things. My brother moved from Canada to the US and being a couple with an American put him under the microscope.
Getting into UK will be easier from tomorrow - 19 July with two vaccinations and may mean no quarantine. See MJ Sailing and Sailing Uma for what happened for them last year. Also check the rules for the Isle of Man which is not in the UK nor ever in the EU. It has its own Parliament and makes its own rules which should be easing from this month end.
they make rubberised shelf liner its made to keep things from shifting . its a mesh with little rubber dots on the intersections/ Its very cheap comes in rolls and in different colors. My dad used it in his motor home to keep things from sliding around while traveling. they may be what you are looking for, for the containers
Regarding shelves in the lockers over the v-birth, have you considered trying "soft shelves"? Attach some kind of rubber band (like the ones used for cars with hooks on) and add one in the front and one in the back on the level of the shelf. As the shelf ot self you can then use some sort of fabric or mesh. You can create a "tube" of it and have the rubber bands go inside of it.

Make the shelf out of Phifertex or the equivalent and it will perhaps allow a bit more airflow and hopefully less mold.

for storage in the one compartment that you couldn't get a shelf installed.. try the "shoebox" sized containers similar to the larger ones you have on the bigger shelf spaces. that location looked like you'd be able to put 3 or 4 across, and maybe 3 or 4 tall....if you find some of the better ones that have latching lids, they'll keep things dry, are clear so you can see some idea of what's in there, and can pull out a couple without really disturbing the others much.....(labels on the end would go a long way too) They're just big enough you can put two pairs of jeans in them, or 3 or 4 tee-shirts, a week's worth of sox or a weeks worth of underwear. bulkier items like a sweatshirt might be single entries, but it deepends on how bulky they are..
Thank you for the video.
wow, what a perfect boat, and partner set up. Smooth sailing.
I would suggest rolling everything - even t-shirts - it makes stuff less floppy and easier to stack especially for the v-berth cabinets 🇨🇦
We use packing cubes in our lockers, we stand them on their side to helps us get more of them in and keep our clothes organized.
Great video!! Ava is very cool, greetings from Brazil
Ava has found the perfect solution to hold the bolts while she tightens the nuts down below . I don't see why Madz always had trouble.
We are very tolerant of these situations, and I've met many different nationalities staying at the marina.
best of luck guys, boat life is great once all the lists are done.
just so ya know it never ends.
lol
For the V-berth storage, you could try tight netting on stainless eyelets to divide the storage space or act as a pseudo-shelf.
Minute 6:55, you can always cut the shelf in two so it will fit through the door, in order to hold it you just need a perimetrical piece of wood all around and few screws, remember it won't be the strongest shelf of the world, but for clothing or no so heavy stuff would do
The alternated has curves… You’re cracking me up
Love the show 👍👍👍
Tip for the locker:
Split a fitting length of the shelf in half, join them together inside the locker.
Considering that it is going to have personal items inside, it won't need to carry any weight.
for that tension arm you built---either make a copy or a template in case that one eventually breaks. Again --to cover all the "What Ifs" in cruising!?--------Mikey, Belfair, Wa, USA
This would make a lot of sense seeing as it's a custom part now.
Or at least keep exact specifications so someone could make it with 3D printer.
yeah especially considering that it's going to be under tension with a big vibratey thing directly connected to it.
@@henrymorgan3982 3D print will never work for that application, no even close...
Quite wet and not warm😁
Go.to.Gibraltar!
We shoved plastic baskets into our V birth lockers. Worked great
I learn sooo much BOAT DIY from you!
Glad to see all your progress!!
Try the soft packing cubes for organizing the clothing. They come in various sizes and colors for organization needs.
Proud of you guys!👍
If you are travelling to Denmark from England, Northern Ireland or Scotland you will need:
A ‘special worthy purpose’ to enter (including to transit)
A PCR test 72 hours prior to entry
A test on arrival
To self-isolate on arrival for 10 days (with the option to test to release after four days)
Another fantastic video! Love you two ❤️
In V berth cabinets to increase storage above stored items Amazon has "storage nets" of many colors that are about two feet long that hold lots of stuff. By screwing in some cup hooks you can double storage. To keep plastic bins from sliding around use non skid mats under and perhaps a bungee cord across front to keep them in place when the boat is pitching. Doing a great job and the boat looks "VERY SPIFFY"
Definitely sympathize with your alternator woes, but I got lucky by flipping the arm over and using a conveniently placed extra threaded bore
Maybe its me, but now we have Ava, the videos seem to go faster. I do enjoy them
Ava's touch👍🏻
Ava, if I recall from Mads’ work on Obelix years ago, he made custom strapping to keep items in their place in storage shelves.
disassemble the alternator, if you see the mounts are just that mounts and are really only just caps on the motor. Use the mounts that fit with the alternator you want.
Love this channel, I think it should be an hour long on tv.
I would suggest you go to the Isle of Man, it never joined the EU and is not effected by Brexit, as a visitor in Athena you can stay for up to 6 months at a time. It is in the middle between England and Ireland and very close to Scotland.
That's a very interesting suggestion.
To add to that, I think MJ sailing was able to get an extended visa. Can't quite remember though but they're US citizens so it might apply for Ava
Hi I am getting excited for you guys, I am not a boater but it all looks fantastic to me.
I think Marty and Doc brought me one day to the future!
So happy to see you both doing well, good luck on the Visa issues. Excellent progress on Athena!
they make rubberised shelf liner its made to keep things from shifting . its a mesh with little rubber dots on the intersections/ Its very cheap comes in rolls and in different colors.
