  • PI Planning in SAFe - what it takes and what it means?
Program Increment Planning in SAFe - the Scaled Agile Framework is no small task. I'm back with untangling SAFe's PI Planning.
I sometimes wonder if I am too sarcastic to provide a helpful explanation. That's for you to judge 😉
Whether we like SAFe or not, PI Planning is a fact in many companies, that resemble more corporations than startups. And it is a stressful experience for someone who just go appointed as an RTE - Release Train Engineer and set to facilitate the endeavour.
In five easy steps I explain what PI Planning means for the RTE, the facilitator of the big room planning. I also explain what it means to do it in a remote setting with distributed teams.
I start with the Agenda - PI planning takes usually two days, then we move on to the facilitation, the role for an RTE - Release Train Engineer, the tools to use - go Jira or go Miro? and the PI Objectives.

We use Easy Agile which sits on top of Jira, so if you link dependencies in Jira (or Easy Agile) it is reflected in both. You can capture PI Objectives there (as well as link Jira epics and/or stories for filtering), plus your normal Jira board filters are available. It also has milestones to make things like release deadlines easily visible. It’s not perfect (have to use a separate whiteboard to ROAM risks) but it has been helpful when doing draft and final plan presentations, and during the execution of the PI for the RTE to refer to during SOS meetings.

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing Joe. The tools to do PI Planning differ so much, so something that actually sits on top of JIRA is a blessing! Curious, have you used Jira Plans for that? Is there something Easy Agile has that Plans don't?

I started my countdown timer…How long before companies finally realize they need to go back to Waterfall because ALL their work is budget locked, time locked, scope locked.

I also might be that many companies never left it, just rebranded the roles and events ;-)

Your comment was rudely stated. Do better.
I assume English is not her first language, and there are some audio quality “tweaks” that could be applied to clean up the levels a bit (a very minor point).
