  • Are you ready to plant a food plot? Make sure to wait a bit and watch this food plot timing video, before throwing your seeds, time and money into the ground. The best time to plant a food plot is not during the traditional time to plant a farm field. Obviously farming is not the same as food plotting, but this is hardly more apparent then when it comes to the best time to plant food plots. Timing is everything, and this directly applies to the future success of your food plots for several reasons...

Just subscribed....I’m a dad of three boys under four years old. I have a relatively low income. I’m fortunate enough to own 30 acres of hunting property in wooded, central MN. Your philosophy and approach is extremely relevant and helpful to me! Thanks for being real and understanding most land owners and food plotters do not have big acres, big equipment and big bank accounts. Keep it up Jeff!

Jeff, I saw your information you have been sharing first hand. I was watching the local doe herd moving through my property and was watching what type of vegetation they were eating. I'm starting to understand a little bit more about new growth, hedge rows and " junk trees". They spent a lot of time at the new growth of the honeysuckle and dogwood tree. Thank you for all of your information you share with us.

Perfect timing for this video! I'm already feeling like I've jumped the gun. I tried to hurry my first spray, and I'm sure it wasn't warm and dry enough...and didn't anywhere near the kill I was hoping for. After watching this, I feel like I can calm down, and wait for better, more effective weather, which we're finally starting to get in upstate NY. We were still getting bits of snow as of this week! Thanks Jeff!

Well, you've finally convinced me to not plant 3 of my 4 food plots until late summer starting this year. Although I just planted one plot last week--not for the deer, but for ME. Forage Beans, Sunflowers, and wildlife grain sorghum. I love seeing all the beauty of the plants all summer. Yes, I'll overseed it with a fall blend in late august/early September.

That's great to hear that you saw more Jim...hope that you get him this year ☺️
And that really means a lot that you can appreciate integrity! Seems like so many channels or online content in general surrounds shameless plugs for products...either channels attempting to grow or channels that have already reached a high level. And it shows in their numbers of overall engagement levels...folks don't like it, that's for sure! And neither do I...again, means a lot to me!

Thank you for all the great info. I have a question I hope you can answer. I'm currently clearing about an acre for a food plot. The woods are mixed trees from soft woods, maples, red and white oaks, etc. Im cutting down about a dozen poplars to open up a nice area for my plot. My question is, should I move all the cut tree tops around the perimeter of my plot? I was going to cut up all the wood but there isn't a ton of cover and was thinking of making funnels with all the tree tops to give cover and direct deer travels routes to get to my plot. Or do I just run it all thru a chipper? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jeff

Jeff been watching your channel for a few years now. Since I really started getting into food plotting. I live in Central Illinois. Big ag country. Where I hunt has plenty of food in summer as you’ve said. My plot I have established in clover is in thick timber. And not a lot of sunlight. So my only choice was to frost seed. To get germination before the canopy closed in on me. My question is, what could I try planting during that later part of summer for a fall food source? Since the canopy doesn’t clear off till late October.

Why do you think red clover never comes up as a topic to plant with rye? Seems like a good companion to balance out soil needs and feed deer/Turkey early in the spring. Is it because most of the states he talks about are so far north. I’m in southern Missouri. I assume red clover would get frosted out pretty early up north. Seems like it would be good to toss out when layering rye in southern MO. Was considering doing this year, that’s why I’m asking.
