Full immersion... take your boots off when you enter your base and expect it of all your guests.
We need a chest that just has a hopper under it so all the shoes get moved somewhere else haha
And have boots named house Sandals!!😂😂😂
oh i love that!
that's a fun idea! i think he should do that
And if people refuse, name a pair of boots "sandals" and place them in an item frame near the door. It will channel the wrath of every Asian mother to intimidate them into complying.
I think I'm desensitized because I've been watching Joel for quite a few years now, but I'm just now realizing how insane he must seem to new people. He's already got a good chunk of a town started on only episode 5, all of the buildings having a crazy amount of detail, him being rather rambunctious and kind of crazy around other people with a weird and fun personality, and him blowing up someone's entire base with like 70 TNT to kill him and immediately apologizing and rebuilding it. Like, he's crazy, and I love him for it
Edit: I love seeing all of the people who are new here or catching up on old series- welcome welcome! It's wonderful having you here! And for those of you saying this is normal Hermitcraft behavior- please know I've never watched Hermitcraft or any of these other peoples' videos! I just know Joel! I'm not trying to compare anyone, simply shine light on how hyper our Bean Boy is!
Started watching the life series two years ago, started watching Joel near the limited life period in april. And I... yeah. You're very, very correct. The fact he's 'bordering the edge of mania' is why I watch him.
@@snowberry2433 Similar to you, I first saw him on third life and I believe the first thing I watched of him was either empires season 1 or last life and I was like "this guy is unhinged in the perfect way and also his builds are gorgeous!"
74 TNT!!!

I had the same thought process after seeing that one reddit post
“British Man Gets Xp” is the sequel to “British Man Murders xB” we didn’t know we needed.
Whats next? British man meets XqC???
Still waiting for "British man xD"

To be honest, the torii gate leading to not-a-temple screams cyberpunk dystopian future. That's sort of central to the whole thing is that there is nothing held sacred anymore.
I really like this idea.
but maybe a broken wall around the pristine tori gate like that was the only thing saved from some conflict
@@virusO1OOOOO1reminds me of how a Torii gate survived the nuking of Nagasaki
I LOVE THIS IDEA!! That's such a great idea
omg yeah ! 🔥🔥
Fun fact, the Gate, or the Torii in Japanese, are used as an entrance to Shinto shrines, or just a mystical world, so it really fits to such a marvellous Minecraft base
A
With the Torii as entrance to your town it gives me a bit of this Spirited Away vibes with all the stalls where the parents get transformed at the beginning.
@@christianhohenstein1422 Correct me if I’m wrong, but i don’t think there ever is a Torii gate in spirited away. (Though i kinda got the same vibes)
@@ThatGuyWithCoolSubscribers I think there wasn't but the tunnel the walked trough was basically functioning the same way.

joel's shovel is named "stop reading the name of my tool please" and i would like to say, no joel. i will not.
I'm gonna read it every time, just because it says that.
and you pointed it out so more people will read it, incredible
I noticed that too. First tool name I read just because it was so long. And from then on I judged all his non-named tools :D

Hey Joel! I gave this suggestion to Impulse so I'm here for you too: Wax your signs! Unwaxed signs contribute to a significant amount of lag, so waxing them with honeycomb will help a ton! Ask Tango for some honeycomb; I'm sure he'll be fine with sharing some.
I took 2 years of Japanese in Highschool, and it's a complicated language. Google does a pretty decent job for simple translation but don't rely on it for sentences; they're not always the most accurate.
Boosting in hopes this gets seen
I actually forgot you can wax signs to make them uneditable
Replying for the algorithm so he sees this
@@Flowers_FungiIf you say it's name it eats your comment and negates it. You've shot yourself in the foot.
Boost for Joel and also because I didn't know this was a thing, thank you for sharing!
I love how Joels base is starting to feel like a densely built japanise street with the tight labyrinth style alleyways and buildings that look like they were all made in diffrent times. Others may find it messy or clautrophopic but i really enjoy the cozy feeling it gives me
i need a book with this setting

British man gets XP is my favorite classic film. I’m glad they colorized it
I heard they're making it a live action soon - Joel beans is starring apparently
Agreed, heard a trailers coming out soon for “British man gets XP 19,087”
It’s so much better than the non colorized version.
@@mylittlecircus No way,! I loved "British man gets XP 19,086" so i am definitely going to watch that.

Every veteran hermit besides doc: "I think we should go a bit slower this season"
Joel: "gorgeous Japanese town go brrr"
Yeah but he hasn't built any secret redstone doors yet so he's still got some catching up to do
doc never goes slow, grind, optimize, automate, thrive. but joel is just genuinely insane with his building

doc boots up where he left off on any server
Joel is so British he accidentally made a fish and chip shop

Still feels surreal watching Joel on Hermitcraft. I've been watching both independently for years, to see them collide is fundamentally warping my worldview.
I agree with this comment so much. It gives me so much joy to see him collaborating with other hermits. It’s hard to believe still but it somehow fits so perfectly.
I've been watching HC for a lot longer then Joel but yes I agree
ik, ive been watching him for so long and even though i only started watching hermitcraft a couple years ago its still so weird to see him interact with them all but i love it so much

I’d agree I love this style so much! But I think my favourite build of his was actually the adventure time treehouse from all the way back in Crazycraft 😂
If you haven't named the town yet, you could call it アホー市 (ahōshi). The shi at the end just means city, while the ahō part is identical to the first letters of the katakana word for axolotl, but can also mean idiot/moron.
i think both would fit joel great

I can’t speak for people who actively practice Shinto Faith, I did do research to design a Shinto shrine for a project once though. And the research from doing that project, I learned that shrines and Tori Gates, in general, were markers of where spirits resided, so while Tori gates are yes used for marking where shrines are. It’s also because it’s marking where spirits reside. The scale of a tori is also traditionally, much smaller than what you’ve built here. However, it also makes me think that this shrine is for spirits and for people who are really big and need a doorway to accommodate that space :-)
For those who have read this far, the large amount of information I learned came from the scholar Stuart DB Pickens !
Well, naturally the Tallest Hermit wil need the Tallest Torii gate.
Thank you for sighting your sources as it makes your info that much more reliable
That thing about it being for larger spirits matches both Joel's personality and his schtick as a giant on the empires SMP season 2
Sometimes smaller, but their are some quite large Tori gates.
Although I will admit larger Tori gates are COMMONLY (but not always) built in or near water. While their is almost certainly a spiritual reason for this, its also practical, as a larger tori gate resists floodwaters and stormsurges more.
by the 1:30 minute mark you managed to:
- do the intro
- call the viewers smelly stinky fools
- do a bit asking for people to subscribe
- kill a piglin
- farm XP
- upgrade armor and tools
- plan the construction of a road to get up and down the mountain
... that's intense. And I love it

Joel pro tip: whenever you will try to add Japanese signs of different mobs/things use Minecraft as a translator. Change its language to Japanese and you will find everything you will need. And you won't need to worry about being wrong
im pretty sure some of the minecraft item names use kanji though. it's probably better for him to stick to just katakana like he's been doing since thats easier for a non japanese speaker to wrap their head around. kanji characters have way too many look alikes and alot more chances for him to accidentally spell something he probably shouldnt
wait cuz why are you so smart? /jk
@@gristendoes copy and paste work in Minecraft?
i recommend using papago naver as it is a great translator for asian languages such as korean, chinese and in this case japanese
i think it might be easier if he goes to the minecraft wiki and then to the page of the mob or item and scrolls down to the language selector. most of the pages have a japanese version.
Honestly, Joel just make a shrine to go with the tori gate because we all know you’re gonna start a cult sometime this season 😭
Bring back the donkey religion
Hi Joel, as someone who is Japanese and follows Shinto Buddhism, thank you for incorporating it into your build. All of the Japanese were technically correct, but axolotl in Japan is usuallyウーパールーパー (uupaa ruupaa), which would be funny if you referred your axolotls as your workers/ your Oompa Loompas. The translation you used is also correct, but has a slightly less positive meaning since アホ (aho) means stupid with a negative context. Both fit your humor so go at it 👍
i mean the stupid things keep getting killed off by drowned so..... (jk)
Impulse in ep 4: “I don’t want to make the entity count too high”

Shriekers are per player, so those are not related, but spooky coincidence
You said you were gonna ignore that room...you could trap a food vendor villager in your restaruant and turn that little ignored room into his apartment where you put his bed and such.
Love the progress of the city! Its looking amazing!
Torii gates, means that from beyond that point is the territory of a god. Pretty cool if you consider the fact that joel was a god in empires
man builds a torii gate he wants to be the olipeligo sooooo bad
😂
olipeligo is elite and incomparable
9:45 That IS a close translation for Axolotls in Japanese, but if you want to go full Japanese, I recommend "ウーパールーパー” (Wū-pā-rū-pā) which is how we say Axolotl in Japanese as well. (If you want to directly translate the sound "Axolotl" in Japanese though, I think アクソロトル (A-ku-so-ro-to-ru) is much closer.)
入り口 is right though, it does mean entrance
‘アホロトル’ Was peak humour tho XDDDD
‘アホ’ means something like ‘idiot’ in Japanese, so it feels like the sign or google translate is calling Joel a fool when he doesn’t understand what is written 😅
アホロトル is closer to the original Spanish and Aztec(?) pronunciation (where the letter [x] actually means /x/ and not /ks/), but yeah ウーパールーパー is how people would actually say it in Japanese.
I love that Wuparupa is where Wooper Pokemon got its name too btw. Super cute.
It's a fun word to hear. First hearing this when I watch JP Minecraft streamers breeding uparupa to get a blue variant
Joel having a breakdown every time he tries to enchant will always be my favorite recurring scene 😂
Also had a little laugh when I read the Axolotl sign just cause it’s said ‘aho’ which means idiots, which Joel also loves to use 😂
19:00 I mean, Yoel can just build a shrine and you know... Use it as an excuse to form another cult 😃

I love how Joel tries to be respectful to other cultures when he builds in those styles. I know it’s the bare minimum but not all creators make this much of an effort
It’s also a clear example of the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural _appreciation_
I'm confused what you mean by this? how do you NOT be respectful to other cultures?
@RubyPiec your literally on yt go watch a video on cultural appropriation, it'll explain better and more concisely than someone can probably do in one comment
@@leemoo1665 nah, decided to check the Wikipedia page for cultural appropriation (didnt know that term existed) and the first paragraph of Wikipedia explained it perfectly which definitely fits in one comment
@@RubyPiec alright but you coulda used Wikipedia before (the comment above shared the term cultural appropriation so you knew that), bit odd to be like "yeah well you had the ability to fit this information in a comment for me, a random stranger on the internet, why didn't you??"
While that's definitely a transliteration of axolotl in Katakana, they are known as wooper loopers in Japan (which is why the axolotl Pokemon is called Wooper) ウーパールーパー (Uupaa ruupaa) The dashes are how you write a lengthened vowel
Can we just appreciate how Joel edited down probably hours of grinding to a couple of delicious soundbites at 0:50-1:00? Then the wonderfully edited montages just keep coming for almost the entire video.
"Stop reading the name of my tool please" is a brilliant name for a shovel. 😂 (15:13)
That reminds me the "Stray" game where you traverse a cyberpunk-like city with narrow streets and stairs between buildings as a cat. It's interesting.
Also, it's interesting that Tango decided to go steampunk this season, and Joel begins his debut with cyberpunk style. It's really great.
that game's design was actually modeled not after japan, but a real place that used to be in hong kong called "the walled city". it was technically not officially part of hong kong so the area sort of became "a city within a city". it was only a few blocks wide, but had a population density of around 50,000 people. there was no building regulation taking place there so the whole thing became sort of one big interconnected rickety building.
it no longer exists now, as it was demolished in 1994, but there are pictures and video footage of the walled city out there. obviously that wasnt really that long ago so many of the people that lived there are still living, and the stories they tell about that place are really interesting. definitely recommend checking some of those out
@@gristen Oh, thanks, definitely will.
I thought the same thing!
@@gristen wow, I did not know that was the inspiration for Stray. Since it wasn't part of the government, I heard stories that a lot of crimes happen there.
stray is a beautiful game lol- those graphics are chef's kiss plus the silly concept of a few things you can do- like you can interact with certain items that is 100% cat behavior plus just the game on its own. plus- TINFOIL.
I’ve been watching Joel since before the life series and the new viewers being off put by his intensity makes me laugh. Thanks for joining us though! Always great to see new viewers around! :D
Im so obsessed with this little psycho minecraft builder and im so happy hes FINALLY A HERMIT!!
15:30 the absolute timing of Stress dying to a warden as Joel is also in an ancient city-

I think everyone reacting to Joel’s chaotic energy is hilarious. I have been watching Lizzie and Joel for a long time and I remember when he used to be more relaxed and he wasn’t the best at building (not bad just not how he builds now yk?). However because of how long I’ve been watching (7-8 years) I never really clocked the chaotic change too much. So it’s been making me realize how crazy he might seem to new viewers and I think it’s hilarious
I love his personality honestly I'm somewhat more of a new viewer (I watched him occasionally since Last Life, but now watch a lot more since his addition to Hermitcraft). I've always thought his cocky and arrogant sense of humor is hilarious. Like I don't know what it's called but it's like an ironic opposite of self-deprecation and it's my favorite.
Dude I love Joel, his videos are just the perfect blend of chill and crazy and entertaining, awkward but not second hand embarrassment, and the chaos, the chaos is amazing
all might?!?!
@@crazicatx14 I AM HERE
Lol
Ridiculous how quick Joel became my favorite Hermit. Been watching HC for prolly friggen 6 years now and THIS is my kind of crazy, lmao.
I love how Joel just randomly insults ppl for fun but no one takes it seriously and it’s just how he greets ppl and invites them to his vids lol keep it up Joel
Thx for the likes guys this is the most I’ve ever hot
the real smallishbeans fan experience lol
Idea: a sushi restaurant with one of those boat or conveyor systems. I'm not sure how it could work but I wonder if you could put a fish head on a mob in a minecart (idk if it's possible) and have them sunken under a carpet or something. Or have some water with fish heads flowing through it? There are also those cool soba noodle restaurants that use a bunch of slides, but I don't know what could be used as noodles.
the string item texture could work
oooh that would be sick!!! fantastic idea
You can put tiny shrines throughout the area, tucked into gaps and walls even.
I've seen these gates being placed in educational gardens in my city here in the U. S. The gardens are designed by Japanese people, so I don't think they can be considered insensitive or cultural appropriation. I'm not sure if it's the same if a non-Japanese person does it... You could probably sneak a temple or larger shrine into the mountainside along the stairway. There are plenty of spirits that you can choose from, or make up a Minecraft spirit. I know that white foxes are in the game, but you can use rare mobs too. Maybe a firefly shrine or a mob that didn't make it in a mob vote.
A protective spirit of the mountain would be in a city like this, maybe the Glare? Even the Rascal.
I appreciate the effort to ensure you aren’t offending anyone’s culture. Not many people have that kind of awareness or empathy. Love the build and am so glad you’re finally on Hermitcraft! We just need a giant statue of your head on Magic Mountain now. You can start a Mount Rushmore for hermits!
I think Impulse and Joel's bases are going to match really well together! like a future city but going through a gate sends you into the remnants of the past!!
Also, I'm obsessed with the build style this season. Joel does it very well.
11:16 translating yet again
入り口(iriguchi) means entrance door you're correct !
19:04 HELP- our super tall, amazing Joel doesn’t want to get canceled
I love seeing Joel so happy. You can tell this really is a passion project for him.
Joel is honestly one of the top builders of this server
i think they are all good builders personally like have u seen stresses skull? looks nice
1:03 not me stopping the video just to catch that name and then feeling caught red handed
Yes. Spend way to much time trying to pause at the right time 😂😂
If this is how incredible the build is looking before Joel visits Japan, I am so excited to see how it progresses when he comes back from his trip with even more inspiration
“stop reading the name of my tool please” TOOK ME OUT U GOT ME
I need a whole video of Joel doing impressions. they're so bad i love it
Around 25 minutes in during gems latest stream there is a full version of him doing the impressions, it's very fun I recommend watching it
Joel is so creative and utilizes so many blocks in ways I’ve never thought of and it adds so much detail. I like the note block idea with skull sensors. It’s a cyber punk city. Maybe having a bunch of villager head ones it will sounds like it’s a heavily populated city. Maybe for lag sake have a lever switch as well lol
Joel, it’s looking super cool. If you need any help with armor stands, Cleo’s your friend. She is insane at it
putting a shrine at the top of the mountain in the style of the kyoto shrines would look amazing, plus it would be a good spot to put villagers for trading
I’m an long time etho fan. I follow him religiously, and never used to watch any other Minecraft RUclipsrs, but the last few seasons of HC I’ve been branching out a bit more. Anyways theres very few I follow, and ethos the only one I watch seriously. But
😔🤚 that fish tank was cute as hell. I’m happy you’ve joined the server and I’ve gotten introduced to you. Your build is really amazing so far and I can’t wait to see more!!!
This season I decided to (try to) watch every perspective, and Joel is becoming one of my favourites. The 'Telling us your life story' bit was hilarious!
I watched this after watching Scar’s POV just now and now the random enderman noise he got scared of makes sense! Lol
I love the tiny alley ways. Just like Tokyo and Kyoto. I have been there and that is very accurate.
Joel saying “fink” for “think” will forever make me happy
Joel's place being the perfect location for a game of hide and seek
abt the "manic" comment from a previous vid. When I started watching Joel he wasn't as hyped, I feel like he wouldn't be confident enough to pull off some of these cocky jokes. I watch a lot of mc youtubers and a few years back I realised Joel is like my fav one, I've watched him for so long at that point idk how or when it became so. Like rn I can clearly see that the editing and video production is sooo much better and he is literally so funny every time. he's very wholesome and nice too. Like I lowkey get if a new time viewer is wary abt how serious Joel is being but I am not kidding when I saw he is super nice to everyone he plays with, the bits are like impossible to be taken seriously by his friends (as mentioned by the commenter, Jimmy). Jimmy is bullied by everyone, and if you come from Grian, you would know that those bits with Jimmy are literally just in good fun because he does it too. On smps, you can see that Joel still cares abt people's feelings even when doing a bit, he is so likeable and that helps him pull off the cocky jokes, because he never takes it too far and it's just so good
Joel’s chaotic energy is so damn entertaining. I’ve only just started watching the other hermits videos and I just love his dynamics with them!
16:02 "oh its bloody grian!!"
i LOVE how crowded yet traversable your city is!! you could wander and explore it for eons while appreciating the details and beauty! also, your material gathering montages are getting wilder and wackier, and it is hilarious yoel 👍
I’m loving all the styles that hermits are doing this season, like tangos doing steampunk, impulse doing cyberpunk. I especially love the Japanese style Joel’s been going for, I’ve always loved the look and feel of it.
“Look at the cute Axolotol on the banner!” Me: that things got red eyes, Joel!!!!!❤❤❤
Its okay to admit it Joel, this is the fun you've wanted building on Minecraft in quite some times, almost eager to build an keep going. I'm a HUGE fan of your build style this season for hermit craft. I love Japanese style builds in Minecraft.
17:57 sign saying "Welcome to Japan, Leave Your Shoes at the Door."
I love this build so much bc I love maximalist decor and miniatures and builds that you can really explore and walk around like ITS SO FUN I love it so much
The cyber city is looking amazing, suggestion for a new building block pallet: Purpur with netherbrick (which has walls and fences btw), white glass and pearlescent froglights. The purpur pink is a nice pop of color with the dark netherbrick contrast.
I can already imagine him getting scared by his own trap 😂
Iskall being in his umhighed phase.
And Joel is just his normal self, but since i read the reddit post i see how people think he is a bit intense. But i like it!
Im glad you are part of the Hermit crew Joel!
The new buildings fit the town so well, contributes a lot to the whole build and makes it feel all the more like a cramped cyberpunk city.
Impulse seems to be developing a Thing for fade-in / semi-shared bases as of the Soup Group saga. Love it!
Joel you are so right, the “so cool” on the turf collecting timelaps did indeed both remind and inspire me to hit the like button
All the hermits: We are going to take it easy this season.
Beans: I will megabuild enough to cover all the hermits normal progress and put them all to shame!!!
I genuinely think this is one of my favourite bases ever. I've like your previous builds, but this base feels truly next level and I'm really excited to see what it becomes
Those buildings together makes me remember of Brazilian favelas, the way they are so close to each other and have these small access to one another, it’s really like the favelas, as a Brazilian it’s really cool to see this even if it was not made on purpose
Joel’s base is probably my favorite base this season so far. It’s so cool!
Joel is the best addition to Hermitcraft since Grian in season six. His chaotic energy is a vibe.
I would have written Axolotl as アクソロトル (akusorotoru) instead because its the most common way, but アホトロル could work as well, but not as common.
入り口 works!
The Gate... Damn, I want to go abroad already. I am going to Kyoto in September and staying there for a year as my exchange studies!
I think it will be interesting to see how you link next to Impulse. With your base being Neo-Japanese Cyberpunk mixed with traditional and Imp (With BDubs) doing more usual Cyberpunk, it'll be interesting to see your base act almost as the "Japanese district" to a grander city with it combined with Impulse.
Just thinking of the LORE, but this might be the wrong server for that-
Bro, Joel has TOTALLY desensitized me😂😂 I used to be afraid of loud noises, can you imagine watching Joel with that kind of fear😅
But he and Lizzie were like my second parents, im used to it by now,
アホロトル / アホロートル (ahorotoru / ahoro-toru) means axolotl as well as Mexican salamander, you could also use ウーパールーパー (u-pa-ru-pa-) which is also axolotl (especially if it's an albino). You could use エントランス (entoransu), which means entrance, instead of 入り口 (irikuchi), which can mean entrance, entry, gate, or approach.
Imagine having to find the wonder egg in this base
The town in XLife was my FAVORITE with all the little details, and this so far is blowing that out of the water! I can't wait to see how it goes and how it meshes with the other hermit's builds on the mountain, I'm so glad you guys have gone this route as its so so cool
also---the build-oriented timelapse for the axolotl tank reminded me a lot of the timelapse voiceovers for xlife, really enjoy hearing the building process summarized as it transpires
17:50 you and Impulse could have a decompression room between your to drastic styles.
I love how Joel is trying to make sure that the Torii gate doesn't offend anyone's culture/religion it's so wholesome that he wants to make sure he is not being offensive. I can't wait for next episode
As a owner of two axolotls, i am proud to say that's a great tank Joel
I just noticed you named one of your tools, Stop looking at the names of my tools please and I can’t stop giggling! Super silly but made my day. Very much enjoying your first season of hermitcraft.
"Stop reading the name of my tool please" is the name of his shovel... LOL
13:12
I feel called out with the shovel name
Joel just trying to be as respectful as possible makes me so unreasonably happy
I've been having a really rough day, week even, and seeing Joel post this today gave me the strength for tomorrow, thanks Joel :)
It might be cool to do an underground black market where you go through the strip mine entrance. Would let you use some of the caves in the mountain in an interesting way
9:34 the signs say “アホロトル“ (if i read it right), which romanized is “ahorotoru”. I havent quite finished the clip, but im guessing it meant to say “アクソロトル” (akusorotoru/axolotl) the one written down basically just says aholotl
If the gates lead up to shrines, then it sounds like you've gotta give Magic Crack Mountain a shrine!!!!!! just a little winding road off that main staircase and wham bam a masterpiece emerges
Man I'm glad I started watching you. The "insane" type of humour is exactly my kind of humour.
