As someone who worked for an armored car company previously, and a limousine company as well that had me on 24/7 'on call' status? Yes, yes it was, and when they bitched that I wasn't taking calls? I'd tell them that after being on shift for 14 hours driving (at least where I am) with no break...legally, I have to have 10 hours uninterrupted, off before I am legally allowed to work again. Citing directly from the labour code. They -hated- me for it, buuuut I was one of their best drivers/custodians so meh. Good times. :)
It's amazing. It's even better when you walk out and quit after being told how bad you are. Then with on a month 8 of their top employees walk out right behind you with out even being asked to join you.
back in the early 70s, i was stationed on CV42, franklin delano roosevelt. i was an E4 out of EM A school due to my scores. i went aboard, and since i did not know any better, the guy on watch in my shop put me on watch in his place and left to hit the clubs on jax beach. i was woken up, as a 600 cycle electrical line going to radar was on fire. i had no idea where it was fed from, and the gus that got me out of bed took me to the fire. all i could think of doing was cut the line. i blew up one set of cable cutters, and the fire started from there. i cut the line one more time, and thankfully it stopped. the guy who left me in charge on that duty station got busted, i got commended for stopping a fire, had only been on the ship maybe 3 hrs, out of school about a week.
14:00 - don't feel bad. I've been accused of theft more than once at my job, and a number of managers have tried to get me fired on several occasions. A lot of them hate working with men, so I expect it. The key is to keep good notes and never do anything under-the-table.

Got to love it when managers claim their 10 year old could do your job better than the current job occupant, and even better when that worker suggests the boss call and bring in his/her genius 10 year old but then it's obvious it was all blustering and a bluff. "Fine, you want it done right? Call your 10 year old and get him/her in here pronto!" Ignoring the fact child labor laws would make this illegal. :)
actually most child labor laws don't make child labour illegal it merely restricts it so it can't interfere with schooling and but stringent safety requirements that most business consider it too much of a hassle to deal with.
English: "10 letters for 'Pantaloons' is too many. Lets just call them 'Pants'." German: "HEY HANS!!! Get the clamps and welder, we're gonna make these five words into one and keep the same spelling. It's only 21 letters. No big deal."
Sounds like the company had a bad attitude towards OP not the other way around. If something specific needs to e done it must be properly communicated to lower levels of employees. Employees are not mind readers.
last one reminded me when i worked at Lyreco. they rather dump 1000s of money in the drain for overtime then listen to their workers. then fix problems, also management positions you didn't get paid much more for the headache, not to mention while in training they wanted you to be liable for mistakes as manager but no pay as one hmm, no thanks :)
Had a bad attitude.. The workplace had the bad attitude not the employee. My "supervisor" got offered a promotion at our workplace. He was at the same level as everyone else for year before this happened. His pay increased and his responsibilities. But when I found out how much he was getting paid and what Extra jobs he was doing / responsibilities he had taken on... It was not worth the money he got. (his hourly rate was £1 more than my own, I was on £9.60 / hour). But His responsibilities were that 3 workers under him were his job to keep busy and organise work between us, disciplining workers, organising our work schedules and working hours. Ordering parts, managing the budget for workers hours and also managing the parts budget. Planning routine maintenance on the £5 million's worth of machines (maintenance budget was £45k at the time. 1 set of tooling costs £25k each and the machines needed 4 sets of tooling / year. Work that one out a second.) For the stress that my poor supervisor was put under... It was not worth the £1 / hour increase he got in wages. He basically took over the Works engineer job, but without the £45k / year pay rate, instead he got about £30k before tax etc. He also still had to do normal shift work and weekend cover as part of his "£1 Pay rise"... I would have considered it a insult rather than anything else. Would have been better to say "hire a new engineer" than accept that "promotion and pay rise."
I wrote a comment about my husband's experience in a large corporation management. I deleted it because I decided it was not wise to publish it so publicly. I really need to be more circumspect about our careers at the Big Corporation. Sometimes so satisfying (when you had interesting assignments, fab manager, and fab coworkers). Other times, a living hell and so stressful. So many opportunities and so many pitfalls. It has taken years to find peace within myself about what I went through at that company, since finally escaping it.
