Joel stepping on the dry tendril shows that it's no longer capable of transferring information through the mycelial network that fungi really use to communicate and transfer nutrients back and forth between plants and fungi. In mycology, the mycelial network of fungi is sometimes known as the "wood wide web" because it transfers information and nutrients across a wide area of interconnected plants and fungi.
@@Beavernator Yeah and Star Trek Discovery uses fungal mycelial networks to travel faster than warp speed. Fun fact, the character in the show who is in charge of the fungal technology is named after a real pioneer mycologist: Paul Stamets. 🙂
At 6:47 you were taking about if they were going to talk specifically about how the clickers aren’t able to see and that they use clicks to hear where things are. Earlier in the episode, Ellie talks to Joel and Tess about the rumors she’s heard of certain types of zombies, and she mentions one that has its face split open and sees like a bat. They share a knowing, serious look, which sets up the clickers perfectly. So, they did talk about it, just not in a super obvious way, which I liked.
@@michaelobrien5475 The creators of the game say they use echolocation like bats in "The Last of Us Development Series Episode 1: Hush" Give it a look.
@@michaelobrien5475 It’s like you’re just making shit up or something. Crazy how people will just say whatever instead of taking two seconds to look into anything
They’ve been completely useless. They don’t build the characters or depth of the story at all. They’ve both just given the same information with nothing new. There’s no need for them.
10:30 My take on this particular scene with Ellie and Joel is very different from Beau's. Joel and Ellie ARE stilted with each other.-- not Pedro and Bella. I took it as a perfect depiction of what's happening between them during this part of their journey. Ellie's begun to bond with Tess, but Joel's keeping his guard up with her. He refuses to let her in, emotionally, even a little bit, and he's also still scanning her for any evidence of infection and readying himself to have to execute her if necessary. Ellie uses snark with Joel, because she can sense that he's not only keeping his guard up, but he's really willing to execute her at the first sign of infection. Still, she's curious about what's out there, which FEDRA clearly doesn't let the inhabitants of the QZ know. Ellie's a fast learner-- very smart. She knows Joel has information she needs, so she's not going to avoid asking questions, even if he's short with her. Joel's standoffish, suspicious, and muted. He doesn't let people in. Ellie's curious and flippant, even when it would be best to not be. The dialogue between them gave us more clarity into who they are as individuals, at that moment in time, not who they're going to be as a unified pair. I loved that scene.
I kinda liked the extra realism as well in the clicker scene. Making mistakes, no one hit headshot kill, missing shots, and strategizing on the fly. Wish they had the museum basement scene. Where you start the generator and all hell breaks lose. That would be so scary as an adaptation as well.
That was in the hotel actually. In the game that was in Pitssburgh, after Bill’s Town, but they already included some dialogue from there in the hotel in Boston, so not sure if they’re gonna include the hotel sequence there
Anna Torv was amazing! She’s been the standout of the show so far and I almost wish they had her live longer but ofc it couldn’t be. She needs to main lead another show 😢 I loved her and Fringe.
My only issue with Ellie being silly in the hotel is it happens too soon. She doesn't start doing stuff like that until later when she's been spending more time with Joel and both of them are more comfortable with each other. In the game it happens much later in Pittsburgh.
Agreed, it is an important part of the story too as when Ellie finally reveals how much she has came to care for Joel with the famous "everyone except for fucking you." Like it hits alot harder.
It's not the roots that alert the infected per se. It's the mycelial strands in the soil that can spread for miles that alerts them. I was an extra in the QZ and they really wanted us to go for depressing and bleak. Just another day digging ashes out of the charnel pit and running from snipers.
I think what really makes the CGI shots of the city stand out; and you mentioned 'I Am Legend' which is the last film I remember watching that really implemented it well; is the 'nature reclaims apocalyspe' approach for buildings and vegetation. IAL is a book solely about humanity's apocalyse and nothing else. Nature rebounds. Can't play LoU but from the visuals it always makes me think of the the film
They weren't worried about her dinging the bell because they'd been through there many times before. They say "Maybe most of them are dead now" as if they'd scouted the building before.
I was listening to the review while driving, and when the clicker noises played in the background, I actually got really concerned for half a second lmao.
I thought the second episode did a great job of showing the Joel-Ellie relationship evolving from a "mission" to more human connection. The score and ambient noises create this incredible unrest, where you're on the edge of your seat waiting for something to happen. Even the frog on the piano was creepy as hell.

Also word on the World Wide Web, I read that Ep 3 is a masterclass as well. Apparently that episode is where things really get turned up a notch. I'm stoked to see how that goes.
The Last of Us is my favorite video game story of all time, and I've played a lot of games. This show has been a fantastic adaptation for fans of the video game and non-players as well. I'm super excited that we are getting to see some slight variations to how things play out compared to the game. It makes things fresh and feel new, even to someone who has played the games dozens of times.
The landscapes are actually not very green-screened. The show was shot in my city and a lot of the Boston landscape is very familiar while obviously heavily edited.
I could be wrong, but I thought that the infected are technically still alive to an extent, and sometimes (in the game) they cry. That kinda would make the whole "seeing the infected as victims" even more solid than other "zombies"
11:20 - Not all of the city landscape is green screen. It’s very practical. It was shot downtown Edmonton and Calgary using the two cities skyline then just adding the debris and natural overgrowth later. They blocked off many streets and made it look like a total wasteland with flipped cars, rubble etc… the big crater in the ground where the bomb was dropped was really neat. I remember walking around the set in Edmonton and seeing this massive blue screen laying on the ground and being so curious of how it would look in post. Their ability to use the real downtown streets make it look so real and beautiful which was absolutely essential to the success of the show. Alberta is quickly becoming a filmmaking hotspot for major productions.
Ellie and Joels conversations on is it hard to kill when theirs once peoples which is a good point in a sad and scary way it makes you think of things that was never mentioned as much when thinking about things like this.
Having played the game, I liked the look of the clickers, a very well-done represenattion. My wife, who has never played the game, though they were absolutely disgusting and pretty damned scary.
Teddy has one-up on me. I know the words North, South, East and West, but I couldn't point the way. I basically work with landmarks and "turn left, then right". I'm in trouble if a zombie invasion like this (or any, actually) every comes.
At around 15 min, you mentioned Joel's hope & desperation. Now, I don't know if this is too much but there are easter eggs all over the place. Notice how much of green (symbol of hope) background remains behind Ellie and behing Joel in the building scene (in your clip 10:30-10:54). While there are some torn pieces behing Ellie, Joel's green background is very much torn apart.
What happens to Tess was so disturbing but it was so impactful like it definitely leave on impression on Ellie but aslo Joel and it was just effective.
I love how they are gradually building the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Especially when they had their moment alone when Tess went to find a way to open up a door for them. The spacing and timing was perfectly done. It showed Joel's apprehension on opening up to her while it shows Ellie's curiosity and inquisitiveness to ask him about his life. That scene gave us the preamble to their relationship growing from here on out.
I love the show. I think it's a winner. I look forward to Sunday nights. So, when Tess, Joel and Ellie walk into the museum, and they see that freshly dead guy on the floor (12:19), that is the same guy who later walks up to Tess and and gives her that "kiss" at (17:48), right before she blows the place up. I know, depending on where you get bit, that determines how quickly you show symptoms, but that guy's fungus grew really fast out of his face and head. He was almost unrecognizable.
On top of how great this show has been already I have to say that Teddy might have been better in this review than I’ve ever seen or heard before. You can tell he knows the ins and outs of the game and is improving ten fold on air. Props Ted keep up the good work man.
This episode was TERRIFYING. The acting was amazing and there's beauty in every shot. Liked it better than the first episode. Never played the game but I am loving the show.
It was reported that EP2 of TLOU had the biggest audience jump from premiere to EP2 in HBO’s history. Definitely bodes well for the series, moving forward, as well as the impact of the pilot.
I never had any interest in watching The Walking Dead and was unaware of the Last of Us game. The only reason I decided to check out this show is Bella Ramsey because I loved her in Game of Thrones. I’m so glad she was cast, because if not for her, I wouldn’t have found a new show that could hook me in so utterly.
Calling them ‘zombies’ feels weird. They’re ‘the infected’. Zombies are more supernatural than TLOU lore which as you pointed out tries to stay scientific and be as realistic as possible. ❤
Joel starting with an assault rifle (and getting jumped by a clicker regardless) felt like such a nice reversal of the game… Like, one aspect of video games that doesn’t translate well to television is that whole power progression thing, where your player-character is continually gaining more and more agency in order to keep heightening the excitement of the gameplay. I think they did well to subvert that here
Played the games, thought clickers were creepy for sure, but it was the threat of them in-game that got me less so then their look; but that live action super HD look at the practical effects of the clicker with the white fungus head that goes out last made me literally nauseous and I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to eat a mushroom again.
Honestly, I’m liking the show very much, but for certain scenes I definitely prefer the cutscenes from the game. It’s just to do with “more is less”. I preferred tess’ death in the game because it didn’t need to be epic to be emotional. Likewise, the driving sequence in the beginning didn’t need a massive plane crash to feel terrifying and high stakes. Overall though, it is a great tv show, and I understand these things need to change to fit a new medium, but that’s just my opinion as a fan of the game.
I couple of questions. How do they have fresh batteries for their flashlights? If all they needed was a car battery, why don’t they take the battery out of the truck that the firefly’s left in front of the building?
They're probably shake lights. The ones you just shake around for a bit to charge an electromagnetic battery. Good ones can last a long time and don't ever need new batteries. If anyone spent the time and money to track these things down, it'd be some experienced smugglers and the underground resistance
1. They are smugglers, they smuggle. 2. They didn't know everyone was dead. If they started working on the truck, someone could have taken it not well, and shot them. Then... Once inside the building, there was no chance to get back to the truck for the battery.
They already explained the echolocation in an earlier scene, when they're talking about the types of infected and Ellie says she heard talk of ones with "Split open heads that can see in the dark like a bat."
I kinda hate the fact they didn't go underground like in the game. Plus the lack of spores and gas masks was a surprise to me. But the fact they are all connected is pretty cool
I have not played the game unfortunately, *xbox player* but the zombie designs are absolutely incredible, the amount of realism combined with great tone and writing is just so good to see. Love this show so far
This is one of the few shows where I have to watch each episode twice... once for the fear factor and the second time to see all the stuff I missed cause I was covering my face with a pillow.
Not all the zombies are called clickers by the way, only people infected more than a year who have gone blind are called clickers, normal zombies are just walkers, then the other types you see later on.
I’m trying to get into the series, but it’s hard to be afraid of a “cabbage head”. I think they’re scarier in the early phases. High points were the planes, grandma with dog, and father/daughter relationship in episode one, and the spooky mass movement of the clickers in episode two. I’m hanging in, but so far it just seems like another Walking Dead.
My prediction: The next opening scene in episode 3 will be about the patient zero in Jakarta and/or about the flour plant where the outbreak happened 😮👀
I hope they add in that Joel won't give her a gun, to protect her innocence... Because once you kill someone, you lose a part of yourself, and you NEVER get it back...
Basic zombie/apocalypse show so far. News show talking about possible virus, Transfer the cure, some corny lines, big zombie horde, lighter not working, go on without me explosion.
Some blind humans learn to echolocate. One guy can even ride his bike around safely. I guess that's how they could've incorporated Joel's hearing through walls in the game, sans the blindness.
Never played the games and when she said I’ll throw a sandwich at them I wondered if that was from the game. Like does her character tactically throw sandwiches at zombies?
I just wanna say, the Fedra in Boston QZ is a "paradise" compared most of the outside world maybe except Jackson(the Tommy's place). yes, they execute a few smugglers and a infested children. But If I'm living there, I hope the government can do the same.

The way Pedro delivered that line was so satisfying to me lol

This show has me eating mushrooms
This show has me scared of mushrooms.
U should come over to playstation, u are missing out on everything
I've never played the game but those clickers reminded of those creatures from A Quiet Place
This is one of the few shows where I have to watch each episode twice... once for the fear factor and the second time to see all the stuff I missed cause I was covering my face with a pillow.
Twist, Nurgle did it n this is a secret warhammer prequel
Not all the zombies are called clickers by the way, only people infected more than a year who have gone blind are called clickers, normal zombies are just walkers, then the other types you see later on.
I’m trying to get into the series, but it’s hard to be afraid of a “cabbage head”. I think they’re scarier in the early phases. High points were the planes, grandma with dog, and father/daughter relationship in episode one, and the spooky mass movement of the clickers in episode two. I’m hanging in, but so far it just seems like another Walking Dead.
there’s different types of the zombies. not just the “cabbage head” ones 🤦🏾♀️
My prediction: The next opening scene in episode 3 will be about the patient zero in Jakarta and/or about the flour plant where the outbreak happened 😮👀
I think we'll see Bill and how he meets his partner.
This was the first time in sci fi history the military general took what the scientist said seriously.
I hope they add in that Joel won't give her a gun, to protect her innocence... Because once you kill someone, you lose a part of yourself, and you NEVER get it back...
Honestly, Tess looks and acts like a crazy cat lady in the show
Maybe I just have a terrible eye but I never look at those kinds of scenes and think "green screen!"
The crimson chin! Love it!
Sarah looks like Maeve. Hopefully she’s all good in the valley beyond.
Joel and Ellie are 2 unique characters out of the previous 8 billion different personalities. Writer on this show......A+!
Basic zombie/apocalypse show so far. News show talking about possible virus, Transfer the cure, some corny lines, big zombie horde, lighter not working, go on without me explosion.
Did Aaron punch Teddy?
I know why they made it all suspenseful at the end, but Tess could of just used one of those grenades to do the job much easier than a dried out Zippo
So the Mass-hole got suspended. I’m shocked.
She couldn’t flicker the lighter because muscle spasms is a symptom of the sickness
Again, great beginning of the episode. It felt horror. Great episode.
Anyone else bothered by the fact that joel didnt grab any supplies when leaving, i mean just grabbing those backpacks or something
Some blind humans learn to echolocate. One guy can even ride his bike around safely. I guess that's how they could've incorporated Joel's hearing through walls in the game, sans the blindness.
Nah, he just pressed R1
Never played the games and when she said I’ll throw a sandwich at them I wondered if that was from the game. Like does her character tactically throw sandwiches at zombies?
Did they leave the doomed woman with a full backpack?
these openings man lmaoooo
Never played the game. The practical effects made the clickers the stuff of nightmares. I could barely stand to look at those erupted brains.
Used to be a human, now cordyceps magati orangepustuli
I just wanna say, the Fedra in Boston QZ is a "paradise" compared most of the outside world maybe except Jackson(the Tommy's place). yes, they execute a few smugglers and a infested children. But If I'm living there, I hope the government can do the same.
We need another name for them instead of zombies
Ceptiods
Clickers
Infected
Beau calling them zombies multiple times.... dude, you know better!
Good soup 🥣
Where is the Marshmallow?
