i’m in northern canada and my studded tires saved me , one winter i bought the best winter tires i could and i could barely make it down my road , got studded tires and now can comfortably make it to where i need to go
center of cape breton here, i had all season winter tires on our ride but just slapped on new studded tires and a set of rims so i can jus swap em out at the end of the season. so far tho nothin but rain and mud but ima be ready when it does snow.
In Western Newfoundland, you definitely need Winter Tires, and studded versions are highly recommended in order to handle the rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions as they get snow almost every day.
Studless winter tires are really just cold-weather tires. Winter = snow and ice. If you want the most grip possible on snow and ice, you need studded tires.
Yes. Studded of course on ice. Studless winter tires are more comfortable, quieter, and more fuel efficient than studded tires. And they are as good as studded in snow, if not better. However, remember studless tires are not as effective on ice as studded tires. Nor are they recommended for beginner winter drivers. Studless tires require a lighter foot, more anticipation of road conditions, and generally more cautious driving. It is not about generations, it is not about marketing, it is about *safety*.
I grew up living and driving across eastern Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Alberta. I've been in Calgary Alberta(Snow melt freeze is a daily occurance here as we get Chinook winds melting the snow/ice each day, then frigid cold freezing each night and salt and gravel do little to nothing except cause rust) for 9 years and had a license for only 21 years but in that time I've experienced some of the worst winters imaginable. From Fargo ND in '97 where in 3 days it dropped 111 inches of snow to regular minus 40 temps in both Montana and Alberta that last weeks at times. I now work at a Custom Auto shop specializing in tires for our diverse terrain and seasonal changes. We sell every major brand and inexpensive Chinese tires for the budget conscious folks. No matter the brand any winter/snow/ice tire will outperform any summer and every all season I've tested or heard of. But if you could put studs in a summer drag radial I'd still say they'd outperform a studless winter tire on glare ICE! Studs on winter tires give so much more traction to an already great design. The real truth about winter tires, and where the focus should be when choosing which one is how deep the siping is. Some manufacturers only partly sipe the tires. By this I mean the sipes are only in the first 20% of tread life in some brands. So although a good Nokian winter tire may do well on snow and ice a set for a small SUV might run $900 up here in Alberta, (and I absolutely love Nokian for winter tires), but a decent winter tire with studs will be night and day when you hit ice which is where we need winter tires the most. I buy decent winters for about half the cost, plug them with studs, and run circles around people with studless winter tires. Don't buy into micro silica being a replacement for studs. Its a sales tactic to get people use to purchasing tires every, or every other season. If cared for properly a winter tire, that's only run in winter temps, should easily last 4 to 5 years and still be in DOT spec with or without studs. I've thrown on 10 year old studded tires that were worn and they still perform incredibly well, so be weary about tire sales people giving advice that suggests you don't need something that will make your tires perform better for longer. And keep in mind that Nokian(arguably the best winter tire manufacturer in the world, as they are a company out of Finland where winter driving is life) have factory plugged winter tires as there highest priced and most capable.
I live in Minnesota and just bought some studded winter tires. Are cops anal about studded tires in Minnesota? I know that they are illegal but willing to take the chance for safety.
In some parts of Canada, especially Newfoundland, studded winter tires are a necessity due to the rugged terrain, slippery roads, and harsh weather conditions.
Think about it. If you walk on ice you want to be wearing dome ice cleats on your boot right? So if your driving on ice you would want to have something that can bite into it and grip. Let's not forget black ice. Studded tires are the way to go for snow and ice
Ok... Studdless tire design has come a long way. And if your forced by law to use them then use them. But they aren't better than studs. Maybe in the Cooper tires that they were showing yeah. Cooper studs suck. I've ran them. Think about this... He says "bring chains" you mean a metal contraption that increases your grip on ice? ... Like a... Stud?
Apparently running studdless tires fixes the environment and all other problems that affect the American public today. I have ran top end studless tires and they are pretty good in the snow but get on some ice and you are screwed. Nothing is better then real good studded snow tires. I hate how the media feels so comfortable just lying through there teeth. You can bet the decision of the state patrol running studdless tires was made on the no snow west side of the state.
studs work well in ice (but don't help in snow) but the thing is most people don't really need them. studless snow tires are good enough now that unless you're going to be driving offroad or on unplowed, unmaintained roads, they will work fine and they ride and handle significantly better, they're quieter and they don't tear up roads as much. i live where winters are about as bad as it gets and i don't run studs anymore. just good studless snow tires. they're still better for some things, but there's always tradeoffs and they may not be necessary.
USE STUDDED SNOW TIRES THERE ARE DIFFERENT SIZE & QUALITY'S, USE THE BEST. I studded my Z28 Camaro, G60 snow tires, high carbon studs. On Flat ice , on parking lot full of stuck cars. They warned me going in , You will get stuck. I drove in, drove around Power sliding, Throwing ice CRYSTALS, 60 feet in the air. No problem. I Pulled everyone off the lot. YOU EITHER GOT STUDDED SNOW TIRES OR U DON'T. Using them in the winter , extends the Life & Tread of your Summer tires.
Banned in Ontario Canada for some reason yet the plows can drag a huge metal blade across the rd even when there is no snow u can see sparks flying I wonder if the plow company gets paid to fix the rd in the summer lol🤔
Total bullshit, studs improve all snow tires. Studs are for ice not snow, snow compacted turns to solid ice. Studs in these high end snow tires make amazing grip. Don't listen to these media morons they are lying to you they are such scum. I have no horse in this race just telling you not to believe everything you see on youtube including this post do your own research. If you want your Wife's or Daughter's car to have the best traction in the winter buy good studded snow tires for them.
tires are expensive and I'm poor. what do i do? I am thinking of taking an old worn out tire and screwing in some screws with a hex head. I am going with a short screw so it won't go all the way in and cause a leak and the hex head will give traction even if the tire is old. i have a manual tire machine i got for 35 bucks and I have swapped tires and repaired tires and got rims real cheap because people don't want to deal with the worn out tires on them. I've done so much with so little for so long that now I can do anything with nothing.
don't do that, it's a terrible idea, just buy some tire chains. they're not going to cost any more, they won't damage your car, and they work very well. the cable chains are a lot less of a hassle to put on, too.
I'll keep using studs .. stick like glue to ice .. no modern snow tire is going to grab on glare sheet ice .. and .. that soft layer of silica wears-down and off in a very short timeframe
Nope. Still better with studs. I live at 8000' in the Rocky Mountains. I have driven around non-studded tire cars like they are slalom gates while they are stuck on Vail pass.
It's perfectly safe to drive on dry roads with studded tires; I've done it for years. They don't grip a dry road as well as a studless tire, but the difference there is small. Just don't go racing your car on dry pavement with studded tires and you'll be fine.
Studded tires are less profitable then studless tire. Studs will be useable 3 maybe 4 seasons, stud less might get you one good year and one not so good lol
Seems kinda anti-stud biased to me, and not really telling the whole story here. While its true a modern snow tire without studs performs much better in snow and ice than a studless tire of yesteryear, putting studs in still gives you an extra margin. The question you have to ask yourself is whether that extra margin is worth the extra money, keeping in mind you may well find yourself in a situation where you need that extra margin.
Get on some nasty length of solid ice and THEN tell us who truly know winter - as we grew up in a severe winter region, thank you - how supposedly unnecessary studded snow tires are................, FOOL!
Good old Crim 2 News not even considering the cost of what the new silica based tires are 5 years ago compared to what studded are. Neither was there a comparison and word patterns or time that the tires lasted I'm currently on studded tires that are 11 years old the studs are a little worn down but the traction on the tire which is syked is great and these tires would be good for another 5 years of no issue. I have a tendency not to believe people when they say something is not good when it's been proven to be good for decades yeah technology got better but I bet you the price went up as well don't believe everything people try to sell you
Laughs leave it to the main stream media to confuse people. The pitch is for non-studds, but the trooper said bring a good set of chains? So obviously studded tires will aide you best.
Zero way they work better than studs. Studs are not outdated bygone era tech. Stud your freaking tires for ice. You can even screw on studs you can do at home.
Studs are the best option. Spokane county whines and has been complaining about studded tires for years because they say studs tear apart the road. Well maintain the roads then Spokane co. Moved here in 1973 and the roads were garbadge then like they’re garbadge now, unless you go downtown. They keep those streets in pristine codition. Isn’t that right. Stop trying to bs people. You do enough of that with our kids in public school.
Still worth it and highly unlikely a cop will pull you over just to check. We also don’t have inspections. If you’re in a rural area, they may save your life!

Featuring footage of a plow truck fitted with chains...lol.
Nothing beats Studs on ice... period
Every winter tire is good in the first season. Let's see how good they compare to studded after a year.

Appreciate all the info you put out!
In some parts of Canada, especially Newfoundland, studded winter tires are a necessity due to the rugged terrain, slippery roads, and harsh weather conditions.
Weird that the guy who SELLS regular snow tires says you don’t need studs.
It kinda makes sense. Studless tires need to be replaced more often since they lose ice traction much faster.
@@juhoukkola2306 This is not true. Studless tyres generally keep the same grip longer than studless tyres.
He probably has a whole bunch of snow tires stocked and needs to sell them😂
probably hates the arguments people give him about putting studded tires on the front of a front wheel drive vehicle
Even the best snows now dont have a chance when studs are installed

Studded is wayyy better on ice and snow for stopping power and traction this is the dumbest news I have ever seen.
I call bs. Someone trying to sell u some patented tires.
As a siberian i'm definitely about studs

In Northern Canada bar down studs are a unbelievably better in icy -40 to -50 weather
Used to have garnet tires years ago. Garnet snow tires were than snow tires, but studded tires worked best.
A generational thing? Tf is this guy talking about?

Ice resurfacing machines, like a Zamboni or Olympia, need studded tires.
do a test with ice and melting water on top of it. not just on fresh snow.
Wow! KREM 2 has a fleet of FJ cruisers!! So jealous
Such a wierd piece. Telling us studs aren't needed but you need to carry chains? I've never needed chains with studded tires!
