  • THIS VIDEO: Magnum Photos has built up a powerful brand over the past 77 years, but during that time the members have had to face crises after crises - in order to survive they have had to adapt their approach. During the past decade the agency's major competitors Gamma, Sygma and Sipa have all fought bankruptcy. Seven Photo agency has also changed its business structure to remain viable. The way that the world’ consumes media has transformed radically - Photographic storytelling has lost the battle to video and social media is geared to the quick and impactful - so finding outlets for in-depth work has become increasingly difficult. The founders of magnum came up with the single use policy - and this was a watershed moment for the photographers - they gained independence - because they now had control over their income.

Fascinating story. God knows what the future holds, for anything. Should we really worry about anything except avoiding the various extinction scenarios at play in the world? Pictures changed what i believed and what i could know when i was young. Now i just keep seeing pictures of things we should have stopped doing decades ago. Taking pictures keeps me in touch with myself and the small part of the world i encounter.

This is a highly interesting video on a topic I have been wondering about for a while.
I had the pleasure of doing two Masterclasses with Magnum photographers, and yet I still haven't fully understood how they can finance these long-term projects, given that for example photo books do not provide much profits due to the high printing costs and journalistic assignments are not well paid.
Your mention of the single use, the shift towards the collectible art market made it clearer.
In addition, I have the impression that photographers like Martin Parr are essentially photographers and Art Directors who can make a photobook attractive to the broader masses, hence enhancing their income from them. Also editioning seems to play a larger role. It seems like Magnum really has had to become a kind of media business to keep up with the times.

Wow! Graeme, what a brilliant video. Truly, your best. I’m glad you were able to put together such a poised, well-balanced presentation. A real “Goldilocks” achievement.

Enlightening...thank you. Nice to see Bieke Depoorter mentioned at the end: would love to see an essay on her work. Timely as she has a new book coming out next week titled "Blinked Myself Awake".

Just yesterday went to my local thrift store to look through their “free books” shopping cart 🛒 they put at the entrance to attract people. Collected a dozen of vintage NatGeo magazines with some incredible photography inside. Just marvellous photo essays. And most of them by phenomenal photographers with a little note next to their name: MAGNUM

Very interesting. i've followed magnum for years and adore many of their members and have their books. I would love a followup video on AI and photography and what even is a photograph anymore. It feels, sadly like a cycle we will be in for many years until once again we relalize what we had, and the importance of reportage in a mindset like magnums, with perhpas some flexibilty. Not sure.

For me, Magnum is still the crème delle crème of ice cream bars. No question about it. Plus these days it comes in a range of yummy diverse flavours and coatings, not to mention sizes - something for everyone.

I saw so many press photographers becoming suddenly 'artists' because the market is in the art galleries. For $$$$

Very interesting video thanks. How Magnum is finding its place in the modern world. To be frank, the 'diversity' stuff worries me; most of us think that the organisation should be about excellence in photography and nothing else.

I can't see Magnum surviving simply because newspapers don't employ documentary photographers anymore, in fact they hardly employ photographers and rely on people sending a phone image on to them (unpaid) so that person gets their five minutes of fame. It needs to be a quite specialist job to get a person with a camera to a scene; journalism on the cheap, but as less and less people 'pay' for their news anymore I guess financial corners need to be cut. Media editors have never cared about the 'intention' of the photographers ... it either sells or it doesn't.
Will Magnum just become another agency selling images to put on tee-shirts and tote bags ... probably, with multiple 'knock off' fakes coming out of countries with low labour costs ... probably. The antithesis of what Magnum was set up for ... but it's a technologically different world in terms of image production.

Correct. Everyone on the planet has a camera in their pocket, what's the point anymore?

What a tragicomedy to attack Magnum for non artistic agendas. The quality of the work should be the sole / main criteria, maybe something like the opaque screen auditions in music where a jury can decide who joins the orchestra without seeing them and be influenced by anything but the quality of the music. Otherwise, I guess they will go the way of Hewlett Packard, Yahoo, Boeing and others.

They are losing because they do not accept new talented photographers that are not in vogue, if you know what I mean.

Wokeness will eventually kill Magnum. There is already infighting and the old guard is not getting younger.

@@iainmc9859 I am guessing your question is in bad faith and you know what I mean, but ill take the bait: I am using wokeness in the sense of being obsessed with oppression, DEI and gender.

    • @iainmc9859

@@ohstanley3058 My question was not in bad faith. I was unsure what your definition of 'wokeness' is.
May I ask a few more questions based on your reply? What level of oppression is acceptable to you personally. I presume any oppression of yourself is unacceptable (eg, other people telling you what you can or cannot do or being excluded from opportunities). I had to look up DEI as I'd never come across that abbreviation before. Are you anti-diversity ? Are you anti-equality ? Are you anti-inclusion ? Do you believe in gender segregation ? (eg, jobs suitable for men and jobs suitable for women) Do you believe in telling other people what gender they have to be ? Would the DEI (wokeness) you speak of relate to skin colour, religious faith, sexuality, gender, wealth? I presume you have a position or opinion on at least some of these. If you could elucidate it might make things clearer.
I'm still unsure how somebody 'obsessed' with wokeness would react ... considering the vlog was largely about the financial problems of a collective photographic agency in the modern business environment.

I got as far as 'diversity' everything after that becomes worthless. By the way Parr should never have been allowed in.
