It's ironic Ogata wanting his father's love killed the only person that did actually loved him - his half brother. Also impressive that even someone like Ogata looks sane compared to Usami.

it is so darkly hilarious that Ogata went to one of the few people who is more unhinged than him to ask the question, "hey, am I normal?" and Usami is just like "idk, you seem normal to me lol."
like, Ogata, sweetie... please ask literally any other person.

Tsurumi is so good of a manipulator that the people he manipulated are awere that they are his pawns BUT they want to help him anyway despite their awarness of the situation.

Well we finally end this Golden kamuy journey, it was a pleasure and I will see you all on 5th season.
meanwhile, let's re-watch golden kamuy, let's re-read the Manga, and for those who don't know there is a Golden Kamuy movie on Netflix, not bad CGI bears, but a Super tiny and weird looking bear cub hahaha.
can't wait for 5th season there are a lot of important things we need to see animated!!!
See you all, greetings from Guatemala ❤❤❤

Thank you so much for the past 53 weeks of hilarious and wild reactions and discussions for this crazy show. I will admit due to the CGI bear in the beginning I was hesitant to watch it. I did heard it got better so I always wanted to catch up so when this won the poll last year I thought to myself this is the best time to start watching it. Whilst this season left on a bit of cliffhanger at the very least it's only got so much story left so I'm excited the watch the next season whenever it comes out. Anyway I'm actually excited for the next anime, the new Spice and Wolf since I'm actually watching it weekly already and I reckon it be a different sort of reactions and discussions compare to other anime you have done.

"You saved me so I'm immortal now." While I think that certainly reinforced Sugimoto's never-die-attitude, it existed before then when his entire family got sick and his dad was trying to get him to leave so he wouldn't get sick too. Instead of leaving, Sugimoto declares he's immortal and just keeps taking care of his family. When they died, that death defying fate of his sort of solidified in his mind I think. His survivor's guilt expressing itself in his "I'm immortal" schtick and just keeps being reinforced over and over as he gets through one tragedy after another.

Not an explosive finale, but a really great one.

this finale actually reminds me of the finale to season 1... it seems underwhelming if that's where you stop, but season 1 was all setup. really, it felt more like season 1 and season 2 should be taken together as one long season, and the finale of season 2 more than pays off the amount of time it took to get there. I think season 4 felt like a lot of pieces moving into the correct places... setting things up to pop off in a big way in season 5. I actually love this approach, I think it's so cool that the series knows when to implement this, and is willing to take the time to do it this way.

As a way to make time, i would recommend watching the live action adaptation (maybe after OP?), just watched it the other day and i thought they did a decent job, though it´ll take a while to see if they fully stick the landing. The movie covers the first half of S1, with the plan being a trilogy to cover the first 2 seasons

I'm glad that they ended the season in that scene instead of rushing the adaptation, leaving out many arcs like Sekiya and cinematograph arcs, and ending it in the next big arc.
Usami knew Ogata very well. He was so kind to support and reassure him when he was in doubt 🙃
So, Ogata actually could feel guilt but he thought he should not be, so he asked someone who could not feel guilt by nature, Usami. I also agree that Tsurumi deliberately put Usami near Ogata or asked Usami to watch over him to prevent him went out of control.
I still hope you will react to the live action movie one day. Maybe when the series is available you will react to them at once.

Season Over! Now the waiting game begins!
So they did announce that the final chapter is in production, I really hope they can cram all of it down to the final season because there's two big arcs left, especially if they're beholden to keeping it 13 episodes.
A lot to unpack here, it's more of a character driven episode, with again mainly Usami, Ogata and Sugimoto/Asirpa.
I do think Tsurumi does see his men as comrades and his goals are true to benefit them, but his men doesn't see it the same way.

Damn I can't wait for the final season to be animated. Golden kamuy is just so peak of the story.

the way I see Tsurumi's manipulation at this point, is literally like a toxic parent. some parents tell their children not to play near the roadside because they might get hurt. some parents tell their children not to play near the roadside because if they're disobedient, then father won't love them anymore. and some parents just hit their children when they catch them playing near the roadside. one approach is reasonable while the others are abusive, but all methods may come from a place of care. there can be all the genuine emotion in the world behind their actions, but the method can still be unhealthy... and the child may even see that clearly, yet still care about their parent anyway. and in some cases, even an abused child may become addicted to the pursuit of their parent's love, specifically because it seems like a challenge to achieve.
the way this applies to Tsurumi is complex, of course. each of his "children" requires a different approach. Koito is a spoiled rich kid who is used to receiving validation in excess, so Tsurumi withholds affection until Koito goes above and beyond to earn it. meanwhile Usami came from a poor family and is ravenous for opportunities, so Tsurumi has to show him affection often enough that he won't do something explosive and unpredictable as a bid for affection.
Tsukishima killed his father because he thought Egogusa was dead. Tsukishima desires aspects of his old life back, so Tsurumi had to slowly chip away at Tsukishima's ability to reclaim the things he lost, until Tsurumi was the only viable thing left to matter to him. meanwhile Ogata killed his father after losing his mother to her mental illness. Ogata hated his old life and found a fitting environment in the military, and he tends to seek and destroy the things that have harmed him, so Tsurumi's best bet was to enable Ogata to pursue the things that truly mattered to him and hope for the best.
it takes a certain level of care to observe these things about the men in his charge. Tsurumi comes to know them very intimately... he was a spy after all. his area is gathering intelligence and applying it. but I think the creepiest thing about Tsurumi is that he'll still send them to the slaughter. it's like owning a butcher shop, and still naming and hand raising all the cows. most people would let their affection stop them from harming a creature that they'd formed a bond with, but Tsurumi is lovingly consuming these men for everything they're worth.
and truly, I do think it's because he already lost his wife and child. they were what mattered to him, and they're gone. this has freed him of whatever might've stayed his hand. nothing he does is for the living. and his men might not even mind dying, because they've heard how Tsurumi speaks of their fallen comrades. how do you get men to fight and die for you, and kill the enemy without question? you make them strive for your love, and promise it in great abundance, but only after they've accomplished everything you sent them forth to do.
