Thank you for posting this. I'm learning needlepoint to make an anniversary gift for my wife. The kit I bought said that I should do a half cross stitch and this made it seem a lot more simple. Hopefully I can get this finished before Jan.
Glad you found it helpful. This particular design is The Naked Canvas Tapestry - Windmill. It's a great one to stitch for clear bold colour blocks. City Escape is a similar style. Happy stitching.
❤ lovely this is so helpful and exactly what I was searching for on RUclips. I would love to see more like how to start the project, how to cast on and cast off. Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤
I’m new to needlepoint. Is this the same as what is called “continental stitch” ? I’ve seen other needlepoint videos and found them very confusing - go up the steps and down the ladder or something like that? This video makes it SO MUCH EASIER! Does it matter which stitch you use when doing needlepoint?
Glad you found it helpful and welcome to the wonderful world of needlepoint. Continental stitch is the same principle as half cross stitch and looks the same at the front of the work. But it's slightly different at the back. The back of half cross stitches are ||||| whereas the back of continental stitched are /////. If you're sewing a kit, check what stitch they say to use as you'll use slightly more yarn with continental stitch. If you haven't got a kit then you can use whichever stitch you prefer.
Any recommendations on where to find kits for these? I used to do tapestry with this stitch type when I was a kid, my granny taught me and got me a kit I tried to buy one recently, it was a completely blank canvas and had allsorts of stitch types - I think I’m a little out of my depth in what I need to specifically search for 🙈
Hi, no problem, you need to search for tapestry or needlepoint kits with printed canvas. They should list what's included, so check it's a printed canvas and whether it includes wools. We sell some on our website and via Etsy www.etsy.com/uk/shop/NakedCanvas Happy sewing!
What do you do if you don't want to put a full stitch in place as it is half one colour and half another, do you ignore the printed colour or can you do a half of a half cross stitch?
@@sharongeorge4528 I would ignore the printed canvas and choose one colour or another. If the kit also comes with a chart you can reference that to see what colour they suggest.
Good day all the way from South - africa. Hope you are doing well? I watched your video of the half cross stitch. It is an easy stitch to use for needle point. I just have one question. I start at the top of my work. Now the first 3 rows, is just one stitch. Do I still use the half cross stitch the same way as you have shown in the video?
Hello there in South Africa. Glad you found the video helpful. Yes, even if the rows are just one stitch you still sew it in half cross stitch in the same way. If you have more stitches per row under the first three rows it may be best to start sewing there first. That way you will have more stitches to thread and secure your wool under when starting and ending your length of wool. Hope that helps.
Good morning. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I also just want to ask... Why do some people start their canvas at the bottom of their work. And how do they do their half cross stitch then?
Hi Vicki, start by sewing the colour in the square that has the most stitches. Are they blocks of colours beside each other or alternate colours per stitch?
It's always best to cast off a block of stitches rather than have long trailing threads to reach a same colour section. Then cast on again. However, if you do have any thread trailing to a new section, try to sew over the thread at the back of the canvas when you are stitching to secure it.
Hi, you can buy the canvas either in a kit with wools, or just the canvas alone at www.thenakedcanvas.com There are 2 Art Deco style designs with clear bold sections of colour, which are great to sew.
Hi, if you would like guidance on how to start and end your stitches, we have made a video on this. Please see our other videos or subscribe to our channel. I hope that helps.

Hi yes we do. We have made a video called How to cast on and cast off (start and end stitching) needlepoint tapestry. I hope that helps.
How doi get a book on needlepoint
Sorry what happens when you get to the next orange road where the orange starts white a way over under the black?
It's always best to cast off a block of stitches rather than have long trailing threads to reach a same colour section. Then cast on again. However, if you do have any thread trailing to a new section, try to sew over the thread at the back of the canvas when you are stitching to secure it.
