This is the thirteenth in a new series of videos, providing advice, suggestions, and information for students and lifelong learners intending to engage in self-directed study of Thomas Aquinas. I discuss why Thomas would be useful, important, and worthwhile to study. I also suggest which of his books would be best to start with, and what other works you might move on to after those. The dialectical approach of Thomas' works like the two Summas and the various Disputed Questions, and Thomas' approach to commentary get discussed, as well as his historical context and his motivations. I also discuss a bit of the vast literature interpreting Thomas Aquinas' thought, and the existence of rival Thomistic schools, and then finish up by suggesting what problems or concerns you don't need to be overly concerned with when beginning study of Thomas Aquinas (though you might find it useful to consider them later).

How serendipitous - I finally got around to starting on some Aquinas a couple of days ago. I am reading the "Summa of the Summa" by Kreeft because I saw it recommended repeatedly on both philosophy and catholic discussion groups. I have to say though, that whilst the introduction was useful, I am finding Kreeft's annotations largely superfluous for my needs (so far) and I find myself refering to the Benzinger Bros. unabridged translations online because I want to know what Kreeft is leaving out, particularly when he skips over some of the objections or their replies. Interested to see which editions you will recommend in this video.
Edit: I do have that Penguin volume too, so that's good. I was planning to pick that up after the Summa of the Summa.

I don't have a lot of strong recommendations about translations. And yes, while Kreeft is nice, the abbreviation isn't the text itself
