So the technique Nagisa did is meant to screw with a person's mental fortitude. By forcing the opponent to hyper-focus on the knife, their adrenaline is at high alert. The closer you get, the more the opponent will focus on the danger. Letting go of the knife is a distraction; by clapping loudly and close to the opponent's face, you essentially break their concentration and put them in a daze.
Think of being in a quiet place and then a really loud noise is made- you get disoriented, yes? Similar concept.

It's also good to note that the "flash" that was shown wasn't really a flash. It's a metaphorical image of *Takaoka's rock solid defenses crumbling down, leaving him defenseless.*

Some ppl gonna argue it won't work, but it did. First, the assassin is experienced, and knows nagisa has something in his mind when he does something like that. Thus, he's scared already, he's in pressure, keeping the eye on the knife, when he drops it, it breaks him a little, not fully, and when he reaches out and claps in his face, what happens when you hear a loud unexpected sound? Do it to your friend from behind if u don't agree, no matter how experienced he is, he can't suppress the evolutionary response *_fight and flight_* , however, the term is sometimes misleading, immediately at the moment, adrenaline takes over, and takes to rapid (conciously)uncontrolled muscle moments, but that doesn't include a martial art block, moreover, u fight or fight in response to something coming towards you, but nagisa just stopped, thus he just gets startled. there u have it, he gets startled, and nagisa gets him.
The Clap Stunner is actually realistic. When in a fight you are hyper focused and sudden unexpected changes can cause you to blank while you decide how to interpret the information. This could be as little as, or less than, a second. But as they said in the show, that is all a skilled fighter needs.
The 3 requirements also make sense. Number 3, the fear of death, means that they have to want to live. If they are willing to die they will be too relaxed for it to work. Number 2, have to be facing an expert, is because an inexperienced fighter will just swing randomly regardless. And number 1 is obvious.
For a better understanding of the combat mindset look up "Cooper Color Code red" and also "condition black" and "condition grey"
the second requirement could also be a self imposed restriction lovroe put on nagisa in order to keep nagisa from abusing this on people weaker then him. or at least that is how i choose to interpret this.
It is realistic and not just on a fight. This is a less "serious" version that I experienced one time. I was so focused at my drawing (and at a rush, too so I was a bit on edge) since I don't do it often but when I do, I have to not be distracted cuz if I did, I lose focus.
So, as I was so focused on what I was doing, there's this strong wind that rattled my window and I was literally stunned for like a second or two. It's pretty creepy cuz I felt my heart stopped, too or something and my body got cold afterwards.
The technique Nagisa used is called "Nekodamashi" or "Clap stunner"
For some reason,i keep calling it the Thunder clap
There was no actual explosion that was just a symbolic scene to maximize the intensity of the thunder clap nagisa used to take him out.

7:57 basically as nagisa was slowly walking towards takaoka his mind was so focused on the knife that it under a case of hyper activity. and once nagisa dropped the knife and takaoka continued putting his stressed mind's eye on the knife it gave nagisa the opportunity to exert a loud clap onto takaoka. that concentrated source of noise overloaded his already heavy stimulated mind due to his focus on the knife (hence the visual explosion) which momentary disabled takaoka which gave nagisa the chance to attack him with the stun gun.

Didn't see anyone mention it so: the clap stunner is based on a move used in Sumo wrestling, and is used to break an opponent's mental defenses in a similar way as here.

nagisa actually used the clap stunner . making clap with a very high decibels and frequency the enemy will stunned for a few moments .
I have experienced something like the flash. It starts with someone so on edge and focused, and then they lose the one component that was pushing them, leaving the person extremely and unwillingly relaxed. Then nagisa struck with a sudden loud movement to throw the senses and nerves completely off. Mine was with a ticket and insurance that just expired. The cop let me go with a warning and my legs buckled in front of him. He then drilled me about anything I was taking.
We used that in wrestling. You clap in the opponents face before a takedown and it takes them by surprise. So when you go in for it they lose track of you
When he was terrified his focus Was on the knife, that is when Nagisa did a really loud clap that froze him for a moment and gave Nagisa a chance to strike
He made him piss himself is what he did he got to focused on the knife so when he clapped an inch away from his face it scared the shit out of him and forced him to try and take in his surroundings all at once creating an opening for the stun gun

What happened is when Nagisa dropped the knife, he then clapped right in front of Takaoka's face. What exploded was Takaoka's concentration, putting him in a daze for just a few seconds. A few precious seconds is all Nagisa needed to pull out the second weapon and deliver the real finishing blow.
It was just a very loud clap that stunned him
You see...what happened was...Nagisa has 4 C4s kinda explosives imprinted in his finger tips. When he clapped hard they exploded together, making those deafening sound.
That attack was called a Clap stunner. Because you know...it stuns ppl due to that noise created at point blank.

i guess the clap is over rated. and yet again, think of a moment 1 mistake would cost you your life... your opponent throw the knife.. you get ready for him to reach he's second weapon and then clap. out of no where (remind you.. while your mind at a state of mistake=death) that would confuse and scare the hack of me
