Glad to see this. Good information. One sin I would add (although I admit I got this from another RUclips channel) is when people stand 6 inches to a foot away from the dumbbell rack while doing reps. It's inconsiderate and makes it harder for others to grab a weight.
Scrolled to the comments to say this. It drives me insane when I have to wait for someone to finish sets so I can get to the rack, just because they can't be bothered to back up a few more feet.
This is the one which really pisses me off as I see it in ALL gyms, just why?? get tf out the way of the rack, you can watch yourself in the mirror if you stand back a couple of meters if that's your thing. The worse Ive ever see was a few years ago some bloke took the deadlift bar from the power rack and loaded it up in front of the dumbbell rack and started doing multiple sets of heavy deadlifts in front of the rack blocking off that whole section of the dumbbells. And im talking literally right in front of the rack, as close as he could get without his weights hitting the dumbbells each rep. thankfully i didnt need the dumbbells but pisses me off just seeing it
1. Not racking weights 2. Doing sets right in front of dumbell rack 3. Taking forever on machine when it's crowded 4. Not wiping down machine when done
The biggest sin, by far, is not putting back dumbbells/unloading weights. The worst thing about it is that its clearly the stronger people in the gym committing the sins. Its not the 50 year old moms leaving the 65lbs dumbbells where the 15s are supposed to be or stacking multiple 45s on the top rung, blocking access to the 5s. These are the same people who then complain unironically about the weights being everywhere. Ego lift then don't want to deal with the consequences of cleanup. I actually rerack weights while resting during heavy work like squats and have had people think I was an employee of the gym. Be part of the change you want to see in the world.
It kills me when people put their stuff down in front of a squat rack to claim it, but then run off somewhere so they can spend 20 minutes on a stationary bike or doing some other warmup movement that isn't a barbell squat. Do whatever it is you feel you need to do get warmed up, but spending too much time warming up should be your problem not everybody else's. If you aren't actually using the squat rack then you shouldn't try to claim it.
Just do more warmup sets of the actual movement if you're having a tough time imo. If you're adding 20 kilo plates/40 kilo increments while warming up, slow down to 10s, and take no rest between warmup sets. If done right, you should already be lightly sweating by the first work set.
this is why i prefer to do warm ups on the excercise im doing, or if any other type of warm up ill do them at home before leaving for the gym as would never try and 'claim' a piece of equipment im not using but then would have massive anxiety doing a warm up routine in knowing at any second someone could jump on the machine I want to use first
WTF?!! How did you not add the person who does their exercise in front of the DB rack?? That’s a no Fly-Zone. There’s no justification for you to take up space that includes 4 other sets of DBs or the up/down walking path for the DB rack.
My biggest inspiration when I started lifting at Gold’s as a teen was this guy who loaded like 800 on the leg press, sat there on his phone for 20 minutes, did one (admittedly pretty solid) rep and walked out of the gym. Never saw him again. Legend.
3 things, sometimes people quarter squat for adaptations for sprinting or jumping But that aside if your gym has safety pins, use them, dont ask for people to spot you squatting, you can place them at the height slightly below your bottom position and if u fail just gently put it on the pins. That aside very relatable gym "sins"
Ive always trained alone (aside from a couple of years in the 00's) but exactly this. I see people working in the power rack all the time and virtually ever use the safety bars yet asking people to spot them even when they dont really need a spot, I wonder if often its just for attention? "someone witness me!" lol
I remember being told so many times when I was younger to always make sure I had a spotter. I think there are probably many people who have been told they need a spotter but haven't learned why and where or even what exactly a spotter should and shouldn't be doing.
another one i see often, trying to hog multiple pieces of equipment at a time to do super /giant sets, even worse when they are selfishly trying to hog two benches for two different exercises
Not just put your weights back but put them back correctly! Why the fuck are there 3 different weights on 1 pin and a barbell clip in the middle of it all?!?!?
The worst sin imo is walking into someones space while they‘re lifting heavy, happened to me today, couldn‘t complete a rep on lateral raises cause i would have literally hit the guy in the stomach
Phone, bag, jacket, water bottle, etc on the machine next to the one you're using gets me everytime. I don't want to have to do a "how many sets does your phone have left?" thing every time I'm at the gym.
Related to #1, DB's left standing upright on the floor, and then people using them to put their phone, water bottle and stuff on them, making it harder to find a matching set.
agree 1000%, although I don't remember shadow fighters (although I saw people dancing in the middle of the gym). Another big issue you could add to the list is people not using towels and/or not cleaning up after inundating the machine with their sweat.
I have committed the sin of using too many smaller plates, but I sort of organically did it by adding 10s or 25s while warming up and then being too lazy to take them off to replace them with 45s.
I work out at home most of the time, the few occasions i have to work out at a planet vomit because im out of town for work, i leave weights on the smith machine because its not 45lbs base resistance otherwise.
If there is one thing that pisses me off, it is sandwiching weights, especially coloured ones. Just match the colours blue with blue and red with red. But no, you need to recreate The united colours of Benetton. Shadowboxing is a No for me, too.
Luckily I've never been asked to spot on a squat, but I sometimes see kids at my gym struggling with 3 plate quarter squats and have to pay attention to them before beginning my set in case I need to rush over. The worst is they do it with the Rogue racks that don't have any pins, so if they accidentally hit depth they might be screwed, at least with that weight. And I don't wanna be the guy to tell them to use a power rack.
its funny the section where you talk about people not putting weights away you are in a gym group commericial gym. I used one of those local to me for a couple of years and that was the worse place ive ever seen for every possible gym sin. especially the putting weights away. (comes with any gym with cheap membership i guess) Most times i went there the weights area looked like a bomb had gone off and weights were just strewn everywhere, even early hours of the morning when empty ig get there to see a near empty dumbbell rack and dumbbells just scattered all over the whole weights area floor in random places and weight plates just all over the place
I think anything which avoidably interferes with another person's ability to exercise, especially safely, is the problem. Leaving weights on a bar is disrespectful mostly cause you appear to be continuing to use the equipment. Unsure if you went for a long rest, were just distracted, did sets while I was busy doing my own thing, or have completely wandered off. And when you take off spotter arms while shakily ego lifting sans collars... I think you need to pay for a class with the smallest individual in the gym to explain to you how to safely share and use the equipment on a few major lifts. Also, I think people need to "rerack" on selector machines or similar. I take off attachments and carabiners and take the pin out to dangle when I can to let any passerby recognize this is not in use. Leaving a handle with a adder plate on a selected weight is the same as keeping weights on a bar, frankly. With the bar, I try and add collars back to the empty bar to even better help show this.
Dr Pak serious question: if I am not to try to flirt with girls at the gym (which I agree is awkward, esp since I am awkward lol), how should I go about finding/courting a girl who shares my passion for the gym/health/fitness? This is a core value for me
Forget that noise. I lift at home, I leave my Smith machine loaded so my wife has to get a hernia unloading it before her workout. She needs to just get big bro.
Is this Jim Sins an adult actor? I swear if dropping weights is on this... Every gym should have bumper plates and lifting platforms. Every gym should also have full-sized 5 kg bumper plates. So you wouldn't have to use the various smaller plates and chips when you're a weak piece of shit doing weightlifting. I super relate to the first one. There's a freaking big paper saying that and it should be obvious, but the week the school started, all the weights have been left all over the place. And with the last one I remember going to the gym one summer noon and there was just me and this girl who casually deadlifted more than my max for reps. No way I could've hit her. Hit on her. But I was impressed that she was there for real business.
Speaking as a priest who lifts, I’m thinking your thumbnail is looking like you want to join the team? Πάτερ Πακ; Might need to tone down the profanity though 😂. Love you, brother.
Ok REAL question for the REAL doctor - If I destroy my legs on squats, then again on 4 sets of 15 rep leg presses, and i crawl out of the gym to throw up in the parking lot, will the gym gods forgive me for leaving the weights on the leg press machine?
I have five: 1 - Not putting weights back 2 - Exercising in front of the dumbell rack 3 - Scrolling whilist resting, losing track of time and being on the machine for ages 4 - Being nice or talking to me in any shape or form 5 - Wearing t-shirts and shorts of different brands
This is why I lift at home. I can use all the plates, never put them away, never have a spot while continually and aggressively hitting on myself.

I'm a big fan of the guy who puts as many 45s as can fit on the leg press to do quarter-reps and then walks off, never to be seen again.
Quarter reps? That's impressive. Most people don't even get half of that.
My biggest inspiration when I started lifting at Gold’s as a teen was this guy who loaded like 800 on the leg press, sat there on his phone for 20 minutes, did one (admittedly pretty solid) rep and walked out of the gym. Never saw him again. Legend.

I am a very religious person. I worship The Church Of Shreddology. The belief that transcendence of life into heaven is achieved at 6% body fat.

What about slamming the Smith machine while I ego lift on it? Does that count?

#6 ... Seriously. Don't hit on women at the gym.
I hate when people grunt or needlessly make noise.
So I can do dumbell rows straight off the rack, it wasn't here, that means its OK.
