Wow! This just made so much sense, it confirmed yet again to go with my gut instinct and my baby’s feedback. I thought I was not burping my baby enough even though it felt like it was unnecessary and waking him up and making him throw up more. Thank you for this video! I am so glad I came across your channel, so much useful information. I instinctively stopped burping him during the night a while ago and he sleeps better.
Greetings dear Emma. I'm a seventy two year old granny from Cape Town, South Africa and love your informative videos. My four kids are married and my nine grandchildren are grown-up. So I love re-learning and you are an awesome coach. Much appreciated. Smiles from South Africa. Thanks. ⭐💝
Hi. I tried to get this milestone document and filled in the details but only received a toilet training pdf? I sent an email follow up but received no response?
Hey Tyler, sorry about that. Was this a couple of months ago? We had some tech problems in September that caused some people to get the wrong one. Looking into it now for you. Keep an eye on your email :)
I tried burping when baby was a newborn. She'd never burp no matter how long I tried to get one out. Later she would scream and we'd have to do bicycle kicks to get the gas out. We found out it was dairy giving her gas and stomach cramps. In case anyone else is going through this, might be worth a shot to cut out dairy for a couple weeks and see if there's improvement.
Thanks for sharing! It's a good idea to check in with a doctor or dietician if you're thinking of eliminating dairy, as they can guide you with what food to avoid and what to eat.
@@rayasaya6803 I'm breastfeeding, so I had to cut out dairy in my diet. I drink almond or coconut milk personally. Any time I eat cheese or drink milk my daughter gets very bad stomach pain the next time I breastfeed her. I'm not sure about formula feeding, hopefully someone else can help if that's what you need help answering. I was able to pinpoint my problem by not eating any dairy for 2 weeks and then eating it again to see what her reaction was (it was bad).
Omg this happen to my hubbys sister in law her daughter since she was born she would cry and Cry non stop nor breastfeeding or formula would work the drs. here in the US would just tell her to put her on the boob baby would still cry and cry well she ended up going to Mexico (Tijuana) for more help and they told her her daughter wasn’t dairy good I couldn’t believe breadfeeding wouldn’t help since it’s the best food for our babies 🥹 so the dr from Mexico told her to give her oatmeal as as drink and that’s what she is drinking oatmeal mix Wth water obviously not milk since she doesn’t tolerate any kind of dairy and she is about to be 2 and she is also on some medication they prescribed her . Such a sad story .
Thanks for affirming this! After much research and just in practice I discovered that they burp on their own sitting up position and even lying down. Trying to convince my husband otherwise is another story.
@@QweenSwan now don't get me wrong I only knew about this when we started solids, but I still burp especially when you hear the classic "eh" sound meaning he has trapped air and you help relieve it so he could finish his intake of food or bottle feed.
I needed this video 7 months ago 😂 My first children were easy when it came to feeding. Had healthy appetites, burped easily and didn't spit up much. My last one was a nightmare because it was ingrained in me to always burp babies. My youngest wouldn't no matter how much I tried. She would always burp when she wanted/needed (which was hardly ever) despite all of the patting and maneuvering. She was more fussy and spit up more which made me panic. Her pediatrician eased my worries some but I was relieved to get to the point where she was more mobile and I thought I didn't have to burp her. Very helpful and informative video!
Hi T.T thanks for sharing. It can be really stressful when the bub won't burp and you have been told all babies need to be burped. Glad you found the video helpful!
There is quite alot of recent literature and new research on this. I've left my baby numerous times without burping and he often burps on his own, sometimes 5-20mins after.
Hi @Rick Victor I agree this one study doesn't prove burping isn't required. As with everything more studies are always needed! As I said at the end of the video it's important to see what works best for each individual bub.
I have never been a huge advocate for burping babies and didn't really do it regularly with my own three, but I was going to say something about how small this study is too. While it's good information, there definitely needs to be more research before stating a concrete conclusion.
No worries. I would just see if your little one is just as settled if she is burped or not burp. If there is no difference then I wouldn't worry about waking her up to burp her.
I married an experienced father. He was adamant on burping our baby. My mom too. The believe is that the un-burped baby would choke when laid down, vomit or trapped gas (gassy baby).
Thanks for sharing! I would recommend doing whatever works for your little one. If your little one is lying on their back for sleep the risk of choking is reduced.
Hi Emma, Will the baby feed properly even if he doesn’t burp ? As I have been told they won’t take full feed as wind make them feel fuller . Further wind will cause them to become gassy if it goes to large intestine . It would be really helpful if you can answer my query. I’m spending 30-40 mins every night after every feed to make my baby burp it’s very exhausting.
I never burp a sleepy baby but if my baby starts fussing during a feed I'll gently burp him until he gets the relief. Sometimes that's just sitting him up right and a cuddle or gentle rubs on his back.
This video is so helpful! It makes perfect sense to just watch and see if my baby actually needs to be burped rather than forcing it. I'm due in two weeks and I've been anxious about getting everything right, but I think this will help my perspective on other things also.
Now, I am confused. My baby of 4 months old wakes up screaming if he isn't burped properly. At least, I think that is the reason because he burps almost immediately when I pick him up and will stop crying after the burp.
Some babies are more sensitive to feeling of gas pain. So I would just keep doing what is working best for your baby. That is far more helpful that a study done on only 71 babies in India... just saying. Mom of 5 babies here... and each one had different needs than the others. Mother’s intuition and figure out what works best for your baby is far more helpful that videos with blanket statements used to apply towards every baby.
My baby does the same thing. I tried not to burp, but she won’t stop feeling uncomfortable, and i literally can hear the air moving in her stomach (sounds crazy but believe me, after all sleepless nights i can hear it!!). With my son was different, zero times burped! And everything was fine. It depends on child. Mamas know better what their child need!
Both our babies would wake up crying and then burp when we picked them up if we didn't try to get them to burp before putting them down. But I agree changing position seemed to help.
HI @Lat Teach if you have found that burping your baby helps him settle and sleep then continue burping him. Like I said at the end of the video if it is working keep doing it but if you are finding it hard to burp the baby or the baby is fine not being burped then don't worry about burping them.
OMG my baby is sooo difficult to burp and I just got lazy and didn't burp him, didn't suffer any consequences. Sometimes he will be fussy while feeding and this is when I know he actually needs to burp but otherwise I don't.
honestly i gave up on burping when it just resulted in more spit up + i had to constantly wake my baby, i just felt guilty about it but i felt like she did better w.o me forcing it… well guilt absolved! thank you for this 😂
I'm an Aussie in Sweden and had a baby over here. The midwives etc tell people not to burp babies except under very specific circumstances. I have had the complete opposite experience to my sister in Australia who was told to always burp, and even to wake her baby from sleep to burp him.
Hi Emma, thank you for the information, after listening to your video it makes sense to me, just wanted to know if we shld not burp but instead keep them upright after a feed.
This information is not for all babies. I didn't burp my baby for the first two weeks, but changed positions. When my LO was two weeks, I rushed him to the hospital because he was having a hard time breathing. Nose flare, chest retraction, and projectile vomiting. Turns out it was because of trapped gas and needing to slow down feedings. One study is not enough to change how you care for your baby.
Whenever I burped my baby she would spit up. So I just stopped. It didn't make her any less fussy, and she kept her milk down more often. This video reassures me that I made the right choice.
Hello Emma. Just a quick question my baby is 1 day old and we’re feeding her Enfomil A+ do i need to make her burp? She goes to sleep after drinking milk. Thank you
Interesting when my babies were in the special care nursery they insisted babies always be burped, even during the feed several times and would not put the baby down until they were burped
Great informative video as always, thanks Emma. Please could you share the link to the study on the 71 Indian mothers in the description or comments? TIA
I'm only 5 weeks into parenthood, but it is clear that you should burp your baby, from personal experience and what all the health advice is, do so gently and walk around/bounce/jiggle their booty if they particularly gulped , a bit of gas is probably healthy for development. If a feed goes smooth and have good bottles and baby stays calm and you dispensed just the perfect amount of milk for them a the precise time, then i can see there being no need to burp, but generally speaking there is no cost to burping and it can end prolonged bout of distress
I was told to burp my newborn boy when he was sitting on my lap, it was so hard to burp him. I found when I lift him up from my laps and hold him straight, he can burp air out. I never burp him at night. Since he was 5 months, I stopped burping him, he can always burp himself. No burping works for us. (All families and babies are different)
This is what we do too, I try to burp him in the daytime but he won't always burp anyway and I never burp him at night else he wakes fully up and will take ages to go back to sleep!
Hi emma... Pls help.. My baby is going to turn 4 months tomorrow.. Her birth weight is 2.8 kg.. And now she is 5 kg.. She looks lean on her upper body.. However she tried to roll since couple of days from back to tummy and almost succeeded except that her one arm stucks below her body.. My concern is i have never given her tummy time.. So while rolling from back to tummy she is struggling or sometimes doesn't even lift her head... Is this ok? Will she learn it by herself Emma?
Hi @Charitha K thanks for sharing this information and reaching out. Generally tummy time is a great position to help develop the neck control and strength needed to lift their head when rolling and when lying on tummy for play. Is there a reason you don't feel comfortable doing tummy time?
@@EmmaHubbard thanks for the response emma.. My elders I mean my mom and my in-laws say that tummy time is not needed baby will learn everything by herself.. Even if I give tummy time they ask me not to do such kind of experiments.. Pls help me emma.. Baby started rolling so will be able to figure out how to lift her head too? This is very important to me as iam a first time mom and not so aware of baby's development milestones
@@charmilakondayagunta584 Hi Charitha, fellow mom here from Bangalore. My mom too was against me giving tummy time to my baby. I did it anyway. I told her the benefits and she finally came around to realise that it's beneficial. He's three months old now and he's able to roll over and keep his neck straight when sitting up. Try to explain to them, if they don't want to see logic, forget it and do what's right for your baby.
@@charmilakondayagunta584 babies are put to sleep on their backs now, because it reduces SIDS risk. The recommendation used to be to put babies on their stomachs. I bet if you ask your family, they will say they put their babies on their tummies to sleep, meaning that they still got "tummy time" every time they had a sleep. Also, there is nothing wrong with doing something to help your baby learn a skill. You obviously don't want to force them to do something they aren't ready for, but things like tummy time just give them the best conditions to learn.
Thanks both of you.. Now that my baby has started rolling over and lying in her tummy by herself, I would use this as an opportunity to provide her more tummy time
Hi @Elisa Reker if you find that your baby needs to be burped continue doing it but if you don't see a change in behaviour then maybe you don't need to burp him. It all depends on what works for your little one.
Hi @Maira Khalid it’s not my preferred approach when starting solids. I prefer to use an approach which considers a baby's oral motor skills at 6 and 7 months.
Hi Emma, I've heard this before and wanted to research it more. I'm currently 34w pregnant with first baby. In order to allow newborn to burp themselves should I sit baby up/change positions for a length of time after feeding rather than lying them down in their cot straightaway? I don't want him to choke on milk if I le him down. It makes sense not to burp though - no other mammals do this! I just want more info 😊 thank you xx
Thanks for sharing! Usually the bub will automatically burp when you change their position. So for example you feed them, then lift them up to carry them to their cot if they are asleep, moving them from semi-reclined for the feed to then carry them usually results in a burp. Also when we put our babies to sleep on their back the risk of choking is reduced because the food pipe sits below the air pipe, so if milk does come up it sits at the entrance to the food pipe and not the air pipe. To reach the air pipe the liquid has to travel against gravity which is difficult. Hope that answers your questions!
Just follow the advice given by your paediatrician, as they know your little one best. You could ask at the next appointment ask if burping is needed. But until then I would follow the Paediatrician.
Hi @Leo7 keeping your little one up after feeding can help them not spit up but it might not stop it because of the reasons outlined in the video. Babies are really not bothered by hiccups so I would try not to worry about them.
Thank you for this!! My baby is 8 months old and when she doesn’t burp I feel horrible. She naturally burped herself as a newborn when I changed her position but found it harder to get a burp the older she got. I thought her burping more would prevent less gas, and less belly pain
I don’t think my baby needs burping, but here’s another question about waking her up during the feeds - I feel like I need to change her after every feed because in the three hours she definitely peed or pooped, and then she wakes up. How do I go about not walking her up after a feed if I need to change her anyway? And before the feed it’s not possible because she wakes up hungry and I have e to hurry to feed her. I tried waking her up 10-15 min earlier and she’s always hungry and impatient…
My LO gets inpatient when she wakes up hungry too, but I'm able to do a diaper change before feeding without major fussing now. That wasn't the case in the beginning, but maybe she got used to it.
Hi @Kamika Hakimova you are right when a baby is hungry they are hungry. I also find newborns are not huge fans of getting changed in generally. Their tolerance for getting changed does get better with time and you can try and make sure the room temp is not too cold for them. When you are feeding your little one you could do half the feed (bottle or one breast) and then change your little one - which will wake them back up and then finish the feed. If your little one is going back to bed after the second half of the feed I would also put them in their swaddle to make the transition easier.
So... Does this mean that we shouldn't hold babies in a vertical position after feeding? Like we should do anything at all? I mean just feed them and then let them do what they want? Like to fall asleep right after feeding
This gives me relief coz everytime he dozes off while nursing and I lift him up over my shoulder to burp him, he is fully awake before I could put him to bed. So frustrating since he and I both need to rest and I have to go on from the beginning... But can u tell me if he needs to sleep to a side or should be placed on his tummy?
My daughter I’m pretty sure I stopped burping her early on. She never spit up one single time in her life so it was fine. My son has reflux. If I burp him he spits up 50% of the time. If I don’t burp him he projectile vomits or he vomits while laying down 75% of the time and it runs into his ears. I keep him upright for at least 30 minutes after each feeding but unburped he will often save it for when he’s in bed. I can see this being good advice for people with healthy babies but for my son it definitely does not work.
I really love all of your videos and I’m always looking forward to the next ones! The way you speak and inform us is very easy to understand. Plus the editing on your videos is very graphic & eye catchy! Sending love ❤️
The poor thing! It could be many things causing him to cry during mid feed. There is no harm in seeing if getting to burp him settles him but it might not settle him.
It might be a food sensitivity. Just something to think about since that's what happened with my baby boy and it turned out that he was sensitive to a whole slew of things (milk protein, soy, wheat, mushrooms, and shellfish). It can be so hard to figure out what the issue is when your little one can't tell you what's going on. :(
The result of the research is quite interesting. But I would like to see other multi-national researches to confirm this. Do you know of any other similar study or is it purely based on 2014 paper?
Hi @abeygi the results of the study are very interesting! I am not currently aware of other multi-national research studies on this topic. As with all research there needs to be more. However, I do know burping is predominately a practice used in western cultures and is simply not done in other cultures.
My baby is 2 1/2 months, sometimes during nursing he won’t spit up and sometimes he spits up A LOT. We burp him, sometimes he spits up without burping, some spit up are with lots of crying before and sometimes it’s random. So this is normal and doesn’t require burping/patting?
Is this for breastfeeding only or for formula feed too.. I tried for bf, and it’s true, she’s spitting up a lot less than compared to before, but now I need to start her on formula milk so, was just wondering if the survey was done for ebf or any type of feeding.
Oh wow. Thanks goodness i found this video on time i have been struggling since my little one has reflux and i thought burping will help him but it actually never did. Woke him a million times cause i was afraid if i dont burp him he will spit up and choke on it while sleep 🙈
I've been binging your videos and they've been very helpful - but statements like "it was *proven* to be incorrect" while referencing one study is kind of crazy. There's the obvious issues like how a sample size of 71 in India (of which only 62 actually completed the full 3 months of follow-up) is not nearly enough to be generalizable, but then there's subtle mischaracterizations of the study. It was one group that were counseled to burp by patting their back, and the other group that had no counseling - this is different than "burp your baby vs. don't burp your baby", which implies that the control group was explicitly told not to burp. Burping techniques like the "magic burp" are not accounted for, which people would still consider it "burping your baby" just without the patting. Lastly, it was not double-blind, and the participants knew they were in the counselling group vs control group. All this is to say, while you do say at the end to do what's best for your baby, the statements earlier in the video as well as the title itself are much more definitively stated, and it may lead to parents thinking that they're now doing something wrong by burping their baby.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree, it’s far from a perfect study, but it’s one of the few we have available on the topic. Just to clarify, which point/statement are you saying is incorrect?
Hi @Rena Rena I don't recommend using a baby walker (the equipment where you sit the baby in a slung seat and they wheel themselves around) because it can be dangerous for babies and doesn't really help with their development. I have a video on baby walkers which you might find helpful: ruclips.net/video/nG-8gvHamlQ/видео.html I do recommend a push walker which I would get at this age. I also have a video on push walkers which might help you make this decision. ruclips.net/video/4yIOSrxcaCw/видео.html
I could never get my baby to burp every time after a feed. So I left her tbh and she burped on her own . She’s now 4 months almost 5 and she burps on her own all the time.
Thank you sooo much man this is awesome man I’ve been trying to burp my newborn but never happen she slept well and feed well aww thank you for the advice
I wait 2 minutes after feeding my newborn, then i sit him on my lap, finger and thumb under his chin, and lean him forward. I then straighten his back out by dropping my leg down a little which causes his torso to stretch a little and the back to straighten (still leaning him forward at all times) and he burps most of the time.
My baby is 7 days old, I can not get him to burb. Sometimes he does but most times he doesn’t. I will pad his back for 10 min without any burb and by then he is wide awake and screams from the top of his lungs so I am questioning what people are telling me.
If you are comfortable to you could see if skipping burping makes a difference. You might find that it makes no difference or your little one falls to sleep easier (because they aren’t being woken up by the patting) and if that is the case you can skip burping.
I get so much flack for not burping my baby. He spits up alot and everyone is like "he will spit up less if you burp him" but he spits up even more when I burp him cuz he's being moved around
I was wondering since my mom tells me to burp my baby (sometimes she will burp but rarely) I noticed holding her upright to feed her & then holding her upright for 20 minutes helps her from being gassy. I’m just struggling to burp her 🥺
Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your knowledge. My LG is almost 8 months now and for the past 5/6 weeks she gets reflux at night. I usually try burping her after her last bf feed of the day which can help a bit but sometimes she is rolling around in the cot for the night trying to get wind up herself, it sounds like reflux lasts all night(she feed about 2-3 times in the night). Am I doing something wrong? I usually let her sit upright for 30 mins after the last feed. She gets some wind up herself but some nights it seems like she's v.uncomportable
Is she spending a good deal of time in an infant bucket car seat or a baby swing? Our daughter did and it caused her reflux to over time get worse and be painful. It cleared up when she started walking and was upright all day. Sadly, we didn't find the culprits until we had a lightbulb moment with our son. He is a kuch happier baby when i carry him around upright and limit the car seat
Thanks for sharing! It's so interesting how bubs are so different and have different needs. As the comments to this video have shown some bubs are burped and some bubs aren't burped. What's great is that parents can try both and see what works for their little one.
What about burping in response to Colic? My little one has been getting really bad trapped wind and we've found infacol and burping generally seems to help her sleep better/longer. Burping also seems to encourage her to eat a little bit more. I'm breast feeding so it's hard to tell how much she's getting. When I burp her she does wake up but then she eats a bit more and eventually she doesn't wake up when I burp her.
Mine actually doesn’t really burp much. And nights are better if she’s not disturbed too much. Usually if she’s swallowed too much air during a feeding she’ll tell you about it.
I sit my 3 month old baby for less than a minute after feeding and he burps lol. You don't really have to put them on your chest to burp. As soon as the food pipe straightens, air just comes out.
Hi @Erin Bayless sitting them up after feeding can help to decrease them spitting up after a feed. But because their food pipe is short, they are drinking milk (liquid) and they have an immature sphincter they may still spit up. But by sitting them up you are making it slightly harder because it has to go against gravity compared to if they were lying down. Hope that makes sense!
This is so much true. My mom used to tell me to burp my babies all the time but I just sneak in to our room everytime I lactate my baby coz its so bad imo to wake your little one just to burp. She just even burps eventually after she wakes up. And even on night time feeds I dont burp her since she treats my boobies as her pacifier sometimes she falls directly back to sleep.
Thanks for this. I have a almost 7 month old daughter. We have always burped here since birth. I’ve been noticing she burps a lot on her own now with out me patting her back. I also don’t put her down for about twenty minutes after feeding, I’m worried she will choke ok her milk. Is this even necessary?
You can keep her up 20 minutes after a feed but when a baby is lying on their back (sleeping) the "airways pipe" is positioned above the "food pipe". Therefore if your little one does regurgitate milk it can be easily swallowed. It is difficult for the milk or fluid to push up and into the "airway pipe". Therefore the risk of choking is reduced when babies are lying on their backs.
My baby gets the first burp in first few minutes and then sleep well. Her face appears relieved and relaxed after that. What I noticed is if I work harder after that to get further burps out, it disturb her sleep, so I avoid pushing her on those…
Just do what works for your baby. My little one needs to be burped otherwise she gets colicky and screams/cries by evening. Also doesn’t sleep well at all.
I feel like my baby’s gas is better when I don’t let either of us fall asleep without burping. I don’t pay her back every time, but I do change position to allow some air to escape.
i am a first time mom and the hospital in japan where my baby was born thought me everything from changing diapers, breastfeed and bottle feed him every 3 hours and burp him after each feed ... i wait just a minute and he burps ,,,.sometimes he burps right away.. sometimes he does'nt but it's fine i don't wake him up to burp.., he does'nt spit often,, he does'nt cry often,, and good thing is does'nt rely with pacifier before he turned to 1 yr. old... (out of topic 😅 )so i'm not worry..., his teeth will grow in he right position,,, i hope you get what i mean i don't know how to call it🤷🏻♀️😅)) he is now 1 yr and 8 monhts
I would recommend waiting until 18 months at the earliest. I would also recommend going straight to using the toilet seat but putting a family style toilet seat on the toilet. I have a video on the bathroom set up which might be helpful. ruclips.net/video/WUweh1u_nvs/видео.html
Well well well - im not crazy afterall. I sortof just..stopped burping my baby (now 4mo) because she would 7 out of 10 times fall asleep and I didn't want to wake her just to burp her. People would say "man she doesnt spit up" or "no reflux?" Etc etc and I would just say "she's easy!" Lol! Now I know why.
Never burping my babies and they are fine :D They fell asleep every time while eating. Why wake them up ? 😅 My mother were RAGING, because I HAVE TO BURPING no matter what 😂 Maybe she should look this video :)
You are lucky! With my first child i had no need to burp. But with my second.. oh God! She feels so uncomfortable after nursing, poor baby! And so hard to burp! You are lucky!
Interesting. I never made this connection. I never burp my son when breastfeeding because he doesn't seem to get much air but always do when bottle feeding because he gulps a bit of air. He's 3 weeks old tomorrow. He always spits up with bottles, but rarely does with the breast.
I am going to cast doubt on this "study". Of course, a parent shouldn't stress out if their baby doesn't burp. But I guarantee you, having a burp trapped in there will absolutely make most babies uncomfortable and is a cause for excessive, unnecessary crying. If your baby isn't crying, you're golden. If it is crying, there are six things you should try, and burping is definitely on that list.
At what month should i stop help him burp?i still do it and he's turning 6mos old he can crawl on his own... Should i stop help him burp after nursing or no?help😪
I would just try and see if there is a difference in behaviour if you don't burp him after a feed. If there is no change in behaviour then you can stop burping him.
Ky baby now she is 2 years old and has si many burp 😥 she can't sleep ,,,, she burp s taking water, food,,, milk, i am mot a good mother because I cant help my baby,,,, dhe has sleep one year on me harms 😞
if you believe that burping is not necessary..then why did u make videos instructing on how to make a baby burp? every 0-3month old baby needs help to burp! not every burp is painful but some can sometimes be really painful!!
Glad it was helpful!

Such a sad story .
Thanks for affirming this! After much research and just in practice I discovered that they burp on their own sitting up position and even lying down. Trying to convince my husband otherwise is another story.
Not every child can burp an their own. My daughter had such a hard time to burp! You are lucky
Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm not certain that 71 in one location performed once is sound data, but I wouldn't be surprised if burping turned out to be pointless
There is quite alot of recent literature and new research on this. I've left my baby numerous times without burping and he often burps on his own, sometimes 5-20mins after.
@@Alabanza.Musicversity thanks for sharing!
How wrong I was all these days!!! Yeah, we tend to wake up the baby to burp her after feed. Thanks Emma for throwing light on this topic.
No worries. I would just see if your little one is just as settled if she is burped or not burp. If there is no difference then I wouldn't worry about waking her up to burp her.
My son don't really need burping unless necessary, if he fall asleep I don't bother of burping then he will pass gas from bottom so loudly
😂
I've found mine tends to pass gas rather than burp, too 😂 whatever works!
Hi Emma,
Will the baby feed properly even if he doesn’t burp ? As I have been told they won’t take full feed as wind make them feel fuller . Further wind will cause them to become gassy if it goes to large intestine . It would be really helpful if you can answer my query. I’m spending 30-40 mins every night after every feed to make my baby burp it’s very exhausting.
I never burp a sleepy baby but if my baby starts fussing during a feed I'll gently burp him until he gets the relief. Sometimes that's just sitting him up right and a cuddle or gentle rubs on his back.
Thanks for sharing. I also found just changing my little ones position would result in them burping.
This video is so helpful! It makes perfect sense to just watch and see if my baby actually needs to be burped rather than forcing it. I'm due in two weeks and I've been anxious about getting everything right, but I think this will help my perspective on other things also.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Now, I am confused. My baby of 4 months old wakes up screaming if he isn't burped properly. At least, I think that is the reason because he burps almost immediately when I pick him up and will stop crying after the burp.
Try changing position right after feeding and just linger for a bit?
Thanks so much for sharing!
Same here
honestly i gave up on burping when it just resulted in more spit up + i had to constantly wake my baby, i just felt guilty about it but i felt like she did better w.o me forcing it… well guilt absolved! thank you for this 😂
I'm an Aussie in Sweden and had a baby over here. The midwives etc tell people not to burp babies except under very specific circumstances. I have had the complete opposite experience to my sister in Australia who was told to always burp, and even to wake her baby from sleep to burp him.
Thanks so much for sharing. The advice around burping does change depending on where you are in the world.
That’s super interesting!!
Hi Emma, thank you for the information, after listening to your video it makes sense to me, just wanted to know if we shld not burp but instead keep them upright after a feed.
Hi Emma, does not burping your baby increase the risk of them turning blue because of gassiness or a wind?
I was reading that babies around 2 to 3 months old don’t need to be burped anymore.
It does sound like your little one found it easier when she wasn’t burped. Great you could work out what your little one needed!
I felt so much less stress once I stopped trying to get him to burp. He does it so well on his own.
Thanks for sharing!
How?
Hello Emma. Just a quick question my baby is 1 day old and we’re feeding her Enfomil A+ do i need to make her burp? She goes to sleep after drinking milk. Thank you
No
Interesting when my babies were in the special care nursery they insisted babies always be burped, even during the feed several times and would not put the baby down until they were burped
Thanks for sharing!
Great informative video as always, thanks Emma. Please could you share the link to the study on the 71 Indian mothers in the description or comments? TIA

@@EmmaHubbard thanks so much
I'm only 5 weeks into parenthood, but it is clear that you should burp your baby, from personal experience and what all the health advice is, do so gently and walk around/bounce/jiggle their booty if they particularly gulped , a bit of gas is probably healthy for development. If a feed goes smooth and have good bottles and baby stays calm and you dispensed just the perfect amount of milk for them a the precise time, then i can see there being no need to burp, but generally speaking there is no cost to burping and it can end prolonged bout of distress
Informative ❤
Glad you think so!
Absolutely! So glad you found what works for you 🙂
This is what we do too, I try to burp him in the daytime but he won't always burp anyway and I never burp him at night else he wakes fully up and will take ages to go back to sleep!
Emma could you explain about baby led weaning
Hi @Nor Fazilah I would love to but I don’t follow baby led weaning.
Hi emma...
Now that my baby has started rolling over and lying in her tummy by herself, I would use this as an opportunity to provide her more tummy time
I don't burp when baby falls asleep after eating. Now I won't bother at all. Thanks!
No worries!
My son suffers from severe bloating and gassiness - won't this worsen without burping? Are there other remedies?
Hi @Elisa Reker if you find that your baby needs to be burped continue doing it but if you don't see a change in behaviour then maybe you don't need to burp him. It all depends on what works for your little one.
Hi Emma! Why don't you follow blw? Is there any specific reason?
Hi @Maira Khalid it’s not my preferred approach when starting solids. I prefer to use an approach which considers a baby's oral motor skills at 6 and 7 months.
@@EmmaHubbard and what's your approach?
Hi Emma,
I've heard this before and wanted to research it more.
I requested for a copy of milestones many times but have not received til this post. 😕
Hi @Rachel Grace de la Riarte sorry to hear that. Just wanted to make sure that you received the milestone PDF? Or do you need me to send it?
Im confused now pediatrician say you need to burp. Who's right?
Just follow the advice given by your paediatrician, as they know your little one best. You could ask at the next appointment ask if burping is needed. But until then I would follow the Paediatrician.
Omg I don't need to burp my baby?! Brilliant! It's so time consuming 😆
😂
Thank you for this!! How about waiting 20-30mins after a feed to put baby to lay down? This was something I was told to do to help reduce hiccups.
No worries at all!
Thanks for sharing! It sounds like you’ve found what works with your son which is great :)
Same. Both my sons had reflux. Burping them was a must. Otherwise they vomited almost every time.
I really love all of your videos and I’m always looking forward to the next ones! The way you speak and inform us is very easy to understand. Plus the editing on your videos is very graphic & eye catchy! Sending love ❤️
Thank you so much!
Can you cite the study please. I think I found it but it’s from 2015. Is there more recent studies?
Hi @Mel M here is a link to where you can purchase the study: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cch.12166. Hope it is helpful.
My kid starts crying mid feed if as if he is uncomfortable.
My babies slept on their stomach and didn’t need to be woken to burp. I would burp them if they didn’t fall asleep while nursing.
Thank you so much for your video. My son sleeps better now that I am not burping him.
I am so glad. Hopefully your getting better sleep now too!
My kid stay waking up when he doesn’t burp so I’ma watch but he gots to burp.
Hope this video helped!
First honest video of burping really internet is full of burping knowledge nd my baby dont like to burp without my help he do naturally when he wants
Hi Emma...
Should I buy walker for my baby or not he is 10th months old and lots of people are saying u should buy, my baby is crawling.
Hi @Rena Rena I don't recommend using a baby walker (the equipment where you sit the baby in a slung seat and they wheel themselves around) because it can be dangerous for babies and doesn't really help with their development. I have a video on baby walkers which you might find helpful: ruclips.net/video/nG-8gvHamlQ/видео.html
I do recommend a push walker which I would get at this age.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Does that mean I don't need to hold the baby in upright position after finishing a feeding session?? Please reply
Thank you sooo much man this is awesome man I’ve been trying to burp my newborn but never happen she slept well and feed well aww thank you for the advice
Great to hear!
I gently move my child onto my chest upright and tap her back to burp without waking her up
thanks for the information. I was worried coz my baby is not hurping most of the time and I feel so stressed in making burp.
Glad this helped 🙂
I wait 2 minutes after feeding my newborn, then i sit him on my lap, finger and thumb under his chin, and lean him forward. I then straighten his back out by dropping my leg down a little which causes his torso to stretch a little and the back to straighten (still leaning him forward at all times) and he burps most of the time.
Thank you somuch 🙏
You're most welcome
Sounds like you are doing what is best for your little one! Especially since you have noticed burping him leads to more spit ups.
But what to do when my baby sounds like Gollum and burping is the only thing that makes her sound normally again?
I was wondering since my mom tells me to burp my baby (sometimes she will burp but rarely) I noticed holding her upright to feed her & then holding her upright for 20 minutes helps her from being gassy. I’m just struggling to burp her 🥺
Now I know, Im a little bit worry that my baby is not burping thank you for this informative video 😘
Putting a baby on shoulder for sometime after feeding is okay to burp themselves that's what we Indian women following.....
Of course it’s ok if that’s what you choose to do 🙂. If you’ve found it works for your little one that’s fantastic!
hmmm 🤔 i’m not sure if i agree with this one. Mum of 7, and i had to burp all my babies for them to be settled and relaxed.
Hi @VioletAliCat it sounds like you have found burping your little one makes her more settled. So I would keep helping her burp.
My baby wake up when he feeling gas in it, and after burping, he feels better and relax, so i think Burping works for my kid very well
Mine actually doesn’t really burp much. And nights are better if she’s not disturbed too much. Usually if she’s swallowed too much air during a feeding she’ll tell you about it.
Thanks for sharing!
What about sitting them up 15-30 minutes after a feeding?
I sit my 3 month old baby for less than a minute after feeding and he burps lol. You don't really have to put them on your chest to burp. As soon as the food pipe straightens, air just comes out.
@@Rue747 sorry I should have clarified. Sitting them up afterwards to decrease them spitting up
Hi @Erin Bayless sitting them up after feeding can help to decrease them spitting up after a feed. But because their food pipe is short, they are drinking milk (liquid) and they have an immature sphincter they may still spit up. But by sitting them up you are making it slightly harder because it has to go against gravity compared to if they were lying down. Hope that makes sense!
@@EmmaHubbard yes it does, thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing! It's good you can escape into your room and feed your little one the way you would like to.
I absolutely must burp my baby if not, he will wake up and cry …
Really interesting imma try this
Let me know how it goes!
@@EmmaHubbard going good so far only little spit ups compared to the big ones he was having

I would recommend waiting until 18 months at the earliest. I would also recommend going straight to using the toilet seat but putting a family style toilet seat on the toilet. I have a video on the bathroom set up which might be helpful. ruclips.net/video/WUweh1u_nvs/видео.html
I had the worst time burping my son 🤣 so I just gave up on it and he survived and nothing bad happened, he also never spit up 🤷
So good you worked out what was best for you and your little one!
It’s great you worked out what was best for your little one! Hoping she continues to be easy! Have fun together!!!
@@EmmaHubbard thank you!!
Never burping my babies and they are fine :D
They fell asleep every time while eating. Why wake them up ? 😅
My mother were RAGING, because I HAVE TO BURPING no matter what 😂
Maybe she should look this video :)
You are lucky! With my first child i had no need to burp. But with my second.. oh God! She feels so uncomfortable after nursing, poor baby! And so hard to burp! You are lucky!
@Jana J. 😂
@@QweenSwan thanks so much for sharing. As you noticed each baby is different.
Consider yourself lucky. Not the norm.
Interesting. I never made this connection. I never burp my son when breastfeeding because he doesn't seem to get much air but always do when bottle feeding because he gulps a bit of air. He's 3 weeks old tomorrow. He always spits up with bottles, but rarely does with the breast.
That's very interesting! Congratulations on the arrival of your little one! Happy 3 weeks old!
I found it was a lot easier to overfeed with a bottle, which made my daughter spit up more
I am going to cast doubt on this "study".
Thank you 😊❤️
Ky baby now she is 2 years old and has si many burp 😥 she can't sleep ,,,, she burp s taking water, food,,, milk, i am mot a good mother because I cant help my baby,,,, dhe has sleep one year on me harms 😞
I never had to burp my daughter when i swapped her to my other breast she would burp all on her own
Hi @Dr D thanks so much for sharing!
if you believe that burping is not necessary..then why did u make videos instructing on how to make a baby burp? every 0-3month old baby needs help to burp! not every burp is painful but some can sometimes be really painful!!
Actually I haven’t made a video on that
@@EmmaHubbard oh ok sorry my mistake😅… i have been watching too many videos on yt about burping that it can be quite confusing for a new parent 🙃🙂
