Im from Birmingham Alabama..im a 43yr old that loves hip hop to this day...just about every artist he named i have albums or cassette tapes of which i also brought the cds to..watching this interview brought back so many memories of a youngster from the south who loved New York rap music..its not like you had a choice because it wasn't that many rappers to choose from..and the south didn't make any noise until 1987 with the 2 live crew..I wanna thank Ty for clearing up the money issues in rap...for the simple fact that since the south been winning for awhile now a lot of dudes would say slick shit like them south niggaz gettin all the money we cant eat..a lot of cats didn't save their bread..point blank period..also a lot of us and California artists started putting out our own shit because we couldn't get love on the east so we concentrated on our side of the world..Fly Ty is to be respected for giving us and any independent black label that blueprint for independence...most niggaz back then were interested in just being on the radio..we were interested in ownership and getting to the money..the hip hop culture can thank Master P and J Prince for those 80\20 and 360 deals..but we couldn't have learned a thing without this dude right here..i hope the brother gets everything owed to him

This is one of the dopest, most intelligent interviews ever. I overstand why Fly Ty has never done interviews before this. We not cut from that cloth to want to be all on the cameras, exposing shit. Bad boys move in silent. But others have been trying to shit on his legacy. The most we ever knew about Fly Ty was he was one of the names Big Daddy Kane would shout out on his songs. But as I always tell people, "the energy of truth, carries the energy of truth". And this is a true exposè on Masta Ace, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shantè, Craig G, Marley Marl, Mr. Magic, MC Shan, Russell Simmons, etc... Now I understand why Marley Marl didn't mention Fly Ty on his recent Drink Champs interview, bad blood. But if heads could put their egos to the side, and truly use the maturity that we're all supposed to obtain by a certain age, Cold Chillin' could still be one of the giants in the game. With the roster that we already know. Now I hope you get a chance to ask him about GZA/Genius. Because he was also signed to Cold Chillin', mentioning the label in a bad light a few times, most infamously on the song "Labels". Keep up the good work Industry Muscle, I just wish you would release the whole interview as one continuous video once you finish with these installments. Also Nore should be reaching out for Fly Ty anytime soon now. He definitely deserves to be on the best platforms to enlighten us with his truths and perspectives. Peace!

I’ll always have the memory of being in the Juice mobile helping to hand out Force MC’ posters and albums. I know a lot of the stories and I’m super proud of my Cuz’n and will always be his ride or die! Great interview Ty , Nana is smiling ☺️

A record deal is basically a loan... and that money covers everything from studio time, to video productions, hotels, food, advances, etc... you gotta pay it back by making a profit by selling records, and going on the road to make a lil extra.. Hopefully your manager can line up some good venues... Gotta read all the fine print in the contract, and understand it...

    FLY TYE:
Artist never know/knew about advances, royalties and re-couping. And claim someone robbed them. All artist know is “I’M SUPPOSE TO HAVE MONEY!” They never account or have anyone else account for it.
This is a fly stories which some people can misconstrue as TYE trying to play a few, talking about their mother, etc. but that just sounds like truth: g-rap’s mom calling “TYE help my baby!” Sounds like facts.
I take issue with his statement “Russell wouldn’t have flown an artist to a better hospital.” Granted, Russell probably wouldn’t have, in all honesty, but how TYE know what that man would have did.
ATLANTIC - I peeped back in 2003 running around NYC trying to get into the industry, THAT ATLANTIC WOULD JUST RELEASE AN ALBUM, flood the street pre-release with street team posters, AND THAT’S IT! THEY WOULDN’T DO SHIT ELSE TO PUSH THE ALBUM, and like TYE said, IT WOULD DROP OFF IN SALES OR COMPLETELY FLOP!
NO ONE WANTS TO GIVE HIP HOP ARTIST “BLACK KIDS” THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE FOR WRITING ON THE SCALE OF GREAT CELEBRATED LITERARY WRITERS AND POETS such as Langston Hughes, Charles Dickens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc. BUT 80s 90s HIP HOP IS SOME SERIOUS LITERARY WORD GENIUS STORY SHIT THAT PROBABLY WILL NEVER EVER BE TOPPED IN RELEVANCE, POIGNANCY AND CONTEXT! One of the greatest songs of that nature, JAY Z “MEET THE PARENTS” the story brings me chills every time I think about it and/or listen to it.
Master Ace wasn’t WACK! He was quite dope, but like many dope artist, just didn’t come off. I still listen to his debut album to this day. Makes sense he was only on Symphony cause Shan wouldn’t do it because Shan says Marley gets you do a record; Marley signs a $10,000 / $25,000 contract to drop the record AND THE ARTIST NEVER GET THEIR CUT!
Graig G didn’t know who SYLVIA RHONE WAS! AND SHE DROPPED HIS ASS! 🤣 Always wonder why Craig Never came off.
I thought Benny Medina was gay? But that’s good shit that Roxanne used to DICK TEASE BENNY TO NO END; had him wrapped around her finger. “1st of all, SHE’S SEVENTEEN! Oh, NEVER-MIND!” 🤣 The funniest shit.
MARLEY - I don’t give a fuck about what y’all say about Marley, ONE OF THE TOP HIP HOP PRODUCERS TO TOUCH THE GAME! If it wasn’t for Marley Marl, LLCOOLJ WOULD BE DEAD OR ON DRUG RIGHT NOW. MARLEY LITERALLY SAVED LL’s ASS WITH THAT MAMA SAID KNOOCK YOU ALBUM! NO LIE! NO EXAGGERATION!
TYE thank you for the back stories to add to the history I already know about this MUSIC THAT GAVE ME CONFIDENCE, LIFE, AMBITION, CHUTZPAH! 1984 - 2000 HIP HOP FOR LIFE!

I was born in 79. As a toddler I fail in love with hip hop. Super rymes was my first record. I had to be about three yrs old. To this day Krush groove is my favorite movie. So to say I appreciate this interview would be a understatement! This is the best interview on hip hop ever. Seriously! As a kid I worked next to shirt kings at the photo booth. I met every hip hop artist in the game back then. If you didn't shop at shirt kings then come next door to staple pictures you wasn't part of hip hop. Awww man this take me back... Every artist producer manager should watch this. The industry reminds me of that time. The streaming and social media reminds me of how hungry the artist was and everybody wast trying to figure out the game not really knowing that's what they doing. There's a lot of gems in history with this interview!

If you read Luke Campbell's book, a book called "The Big Payback" and check out Kraze's videos especially this series with Ty. You'll pretty much be able to connect the bulk of the dots as it relates to the embryonic stages of hip hop to the "Golden Era". Marley Marl is arguably my favorite producer and I find it very ironic why Fly Ty isn't mentioned in his recent "Drink Champs" interview (barely tolerable if you know most of the details due to Nore's willful ignorance and constant interruptions).
The reason I cite Luke is most aren't aware and Marley touched on this (I live in Miami now) but in the early 80s before the 2 Live Crew or Luke Records. Luke booked a lot of the groups of the time to come to PacJam here. A lot of the innovations both business and record wise he got from talking/interacting with the groups he booked (RunDMC, Shante, Divine Style, Jekyll and Hyde, etc).
I can't quite put my finger on it yet but there seems to be some overreaching agenda why FLY TY/Cold Chillin is deliberately ignored or skipped over in the annals of hip hop history. I probably bought most to all of everything on that label (OK, I passed on Nubian Mob and Diamond Shell,lol)... "Never in a RUSH, I'm COLD CHILLIN" (the commenter who spoke foul about Shan has no clue. I've always loved that line). Anyways, this chapter was very telling and revealing.
His level of detail is so spot on that you need the same/comparable to be able to refute his claims. He's also very forthright and not making himself always look good.
Again KRAZE great content and yes I've been sharing this.

it's SO DOPE to hear the history from the executive/label owner side. We need these stories because it's the nuance of any story where the real magic and truth is at. And it's important to have that account for the future.

Ty is in the 90 percentile with the facts. Master Ace wasn't wack though, from what I understand. According to some Juice Crew sources they thought Ace was wack because he looked nerdy. Until Ace laid that verse on the Symphony and the rest is history. #ShoutOutToMasterAce and #ShoutOutToFlyTy for keeping it overall 100.
