- Does The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening stand the test of time?
Despite being a pretty big Zelda fan, I gotta confess: I’ve sorta neglected the 2D side of the franchise. Growing up, I never had a chance to play the originals, A Link to the Past, the Oracles, or of course, Link’s Awakening. So from this day forth, I’m making it my goal to fix that, and I figured that, with the recent-ish remake on the Switch, Link’s Awakening would be a great place to start. Given how long ago the original was made, and with it being the first handheld entry in the series, I didn’t know what to expect from it. I’m FibreOpticBroadBean and this is my retrospective review of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening!

This came very out of the blue but I'm glad you went over it. Easily one of my favourite Zelda games even if it's so short. The story behind it is really interesting, and (fun fact) it was actually put in behind Miamoto's back

Haha, honestly me playing this game came out of the blue so that checks out! I didn't actually know that about the story, that's an interesting tidbit!
@@FobbYeah it was actually Aonuma who had to sneak it in, originally there was going to be literally no story. I'm glad he did add it because it's what makes Link's awakening special imo
Weird that they'd consider even making a Zelda game without a story, perhaps they weren't optimistic that it would work out on the Gameboy hardware. You're very right, it's such a big part of Link's Awakening's identity!
This is my favorite Zelda game.

@@Fobb hummm...I like them both for different reasons. The original for nostalgia and being ahead of its time, but I think I just prefer the prettier remake. The graphics are a cherry on top of an already delicious cake! It is soo charming!

@@Fobb Loved it! It felt like the most "traditional" Zelda entry I've played in a while --very reminiscent to Zelda 1-- with adorable aesthetics, a wonderfully condensed map, and it never drags on for too long. A nice touch of classic TLoZ after BotW and TotK. Great video btw ;)
Thanks so much! The modern Zelda games are really fantastic, but it's always nice to go back the classics. Link's Awakening was great and I also liked Minish Cap for similar reasons to the ones you listed about LA - would definitely recommend giving that one a try if you haven't already!

Spoilers since it wasnt mentioned in the video, but if you dont die at all in your playthrough you get the true ending where its hinted thay Marin gets to fulfill her dream of turning into a seagull so she can sing her song to everyone
I've gotta try this out at some stage, think I died a handful of times on my first playthrough so didn't get to see this 👀
