Thank you Doug. My wife has recently been diagnosed with Dementia. Following along with your RUclips video tutorials is something I can do in the room next door while looking after her. I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us. Shaun, Chorley, Lancashire, UK
I have to say…. When I was young I use to sit around amazed watching Bob Ross. He did so much amazing stuff but I was too young to try it. A couple months ago I stumbled onto your videos and I now have about 300 lil hillbillies all over the place. Your videos are always appreciated more than you know… you are the Bob Ross of carving. Thank you so much for helping me learn how to carve and enjoy my time.
The process of carving with your hands is so skillful. Once I used a paring knife and my hands were eaten, so I used traditional carving in my hometown. 12:26
Thank you Doug, I love these simple but fun carvings. Yes its always great to watch you carve a larger piece, but somehow these smaller carvings gives you more pleasure.
I thought of a great carve for the fall. I made a hay bake from 1 1/2” block. I carved some pumpkins out of 1x1 and it made a great display. I wish I could show you. I will rewatch this video to carve along. Thanks for all your great work! Great trailer btw, seems you have a sweet little clubhouse 😊
Great video Doug. I wanted to share with you (and the wider community) --- there is an easy way to make your own eye hooks, which really saves some money. My ornament eye hooks cost me only $0.02 per hook! Tools Needed: - a pliers - a wire nippers - a power drill - a 2 1/2 inch swag hook (under $1 at the hardware store; looks like a question mark; see link below to an example) Materials Needed: 19 gauge (1mm) steel wire (50 feet is $5 at my local hardware store) Process: 1) Insert the swag hook into your drill, tighten the chuck, then put the drill in reverse 2) Nip off about 2.5" of wire, gently bend in half so the ends are near eachother 3) Loop the bent wire around the swag hook 4) Firmly hold the ends of your wire with the pliers and turn on the drill. The wire will start to twist up. When it's fully twisted, turn off the drill. Do not over twist. I always twist in 'reverse' because it makes an eye hook that will screw in the conventional direction (righty-tighty) 5) Remove your newly formed eye hook from the swag hook. And nip off the end that was held by the pliers; this makes a clean cut end. 6) Use all the money you saved to get yourself a new tool. If any of this is confusing, just post a reply and I'll help you. This was awesome! Thanks so much. Using the pencil lines was a big help for me, and the reminder that the eyes are on a slant. I learned so much. Makes for a nice gift. You are a gifted teacher and I believe a genuinely good person. Thanks for all your time and effort. How about a 1” fireman?😊
Excellent video as always. This is a nice twist on ‘The 5 minute Wizard’ and ‘Easter Island Head’ carvings you have done in the past. Keep up the great work.
i just finished making 3 of the slender snowmen so this one hit my screen just in time. I'll get stuck in with a few of these tomorrow Thanks a lot, linker :)
Just like @scpattenden1/Shaun mentioned - my wife also got hit with a rare and aggressive form of MS (among other things) 5 years ago. Seeing these warm videos from Doug, around the holidays especially, really put a smile on our faces. It's been a crazy 5 years since her diagnoses. But it's really taught me gratitude for the good times. And warm holiday videos like this, really give us peace. The carvings are adorable. We love them. Thank you for being you Doug. Keep the amazing content coming as you are able brother. Best wishes for a safe and cozy holiday season, to all. ~Doug from Maryland
Doug, you have inspired me through the pandemic and now with changes in the lower 48. How can I buy you a coffee to express my appreciation? and do you have any more merchandise, like your shirts. You are a natural teacher and as everyone else I love your tutorials. Actually I love just listening to you.
As someone who is not woodcarving (yet) i appreciate your tutorials. The way you show us step by step and even your wood testing vid, earlier this year, help taking the fear of the unknown. One day i might take the leap and start cutting... carefully. 😅 Thank you.
So good to see you again Doug. Looks like you are doing well. I don't mind if you mix up the holiday themed carvings. What ever suits your mood suits me. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful! I started carving the 'back-sides' a couple of years ago starting with Larry Greens Jack the Pumpkin! I found it easily gave me more practice carving another face! Thanks for this tutorial!
Thank you Doug. You have reignited my passion for creating again. I love the 1x1 tutorials and am a newbie. Using the thumb on the knife has made all the difference, nice clean cuts. I am whittling in the kitchen at the mo and find myself carving whilst waiting on food to cook and even when its on the table I am so engrossed i let the food go cold. Loving it 😁
I've fallen in love with your site and the comfortable atmosphere of instruction that you provide. If you get a chance, could you tell us what color you typically paint the eyeballs of your characters before adding the pupil? Thanks so much!
This project has so much potential...nutcracker on one and snowman on the other. Elf on one side and Santa on reverse. Minor differences in facial features and changes in the color scheme would do it. Is there any chance on a witch/warlock and jack-o-lantern combo?
Howdy Howdy done watch all ur videos learned a lot thxs. Was wondering if you could do one on how to make a hillbilly woman haha id appreciate it. Keep up the amazing work! Thxs again
Doug, your carving videos got me through the pandemic and I’ve been carving ever since. I’ve been making Santa ornaments as gifts the past several years so thanks for this new design wrinkle. I’d love to know what that ruler is that wraps around the edge of the block
As a newbie carvers I have been wondering how to do something with the simple 3 sided Santa that you have taught and demonstrated that would have carving decoration all the way around for hanging on a Christmas tree. And by golly here you are with perfect timing showing us all how to accomplish the very thing I have been wondering about. Thank you once again for all of your help.
You always have some awsome carvings and this 1" series really helps for people just starting off. Would like to know if you have any flower whittles? Or if you can make one for us like a simple rose?
Hey Doug I started Carving yesterday and I feel like I’m to weak for carving. I can’t get my knife into the wood against the grain for a stop cut… I would really appreciate your help! I am a underweight girl and don’t really have strong muscles. Or is just the technique my problem? I watched your introduction to woodcarving video where you showed all the techniques a beginner should know. Maybe I’m doing something wrong 😆
Keep going there are lots of women carvers but you may have to build some hand strength but it will come.i would also make sure you have a good knife and keep it razor sharp as that’s usually the main issue
Thank you Doug. My wife has recently been diagnosed with Dementia. Following along with your RUclips video tutorials is something I can do in the room next door while looking after her. I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us. Shaun, Chorley, Lancashire, UK
A strong hug friend
Peace and love
God bless you brother❤
Why don’t you try your wife woodcarving?
Still believe teachers must relate to the students and you have the teachers gift.
Thanks for teaching.

Thanks, Doug. This was a really fun little project to carve.
Love the double side concept...might also try with a grinch

It's like xmas morning when you wake up and go on you tube and there's a new Linker video . Thanks Doug !
Thank you Doug, I love these simple but fun carvings. Yes its always great to watch you carve a larger piece, but somehow these smaller carvings gives you more pleasure.
This is neat project and the nice part is we get to have most things demonstrated twice. Thanks Doug

The idea of the two-sided Santa head is so clever! Thank you for sharing 😀
This was awesome! Thanks so much. Using the pencil lines was a big help for me, and the reminder that the eyes are on a slant. I learned so much. Makes for a nice gift. You are a gifted teacher and I believe a genuinely good person. Thanks for all your time and effort.

Loving it Doug, thanks for the tips and tricks. You are living the dream. Thank you for sharing.

Great project Doug, love the 1x1 series. That is a beautiful spot, to just hang out and listen to the birds sing. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic Doug ..excellent work .. Great project for the holidays ..Thank you my friend for the great work
Thanks Gene
If we learn the skill of holding a carving knife, then when traveling somewhere, we can create mini works of art to our liking.
Thanks, sharpening the knives right now. Inspiring. Happy to see you enjoying your time out in the woods 🤓
You are the best
So good to see you again Doug. Looks like you are doing well. I don't mind if you mix up the holiday themed carvings. What ever suits your mood suits me. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Doug for another great carving video!

Excellent Doug really enjoy your carving videos big thanks from Cornwall in the uk.
Hey Doug, thanks for all the carving inspiration. I am addicted to it now. Maybe you could whittle a dog in the 1x1 series? That would be cool.
Awesome carvings as normal.
This project has so much potential...nutcracker on one and snowman on the other. Elf on one side and Santa on reverse. Minor differences in facial features and changes in the color scheme would do it. Is there any chance on a witch/warlock and jack-o-lantern combo?

Doug, Where did you get the ruler? Does it have a special name so I can look it up? Looks real handy for your 1” projects!
not aware of a special name but it's from lee valley -overpriced but sure do love it
Trying to figure out what type of paint you use?
