I went out and purchased a 6D xenon torch. I use it more than my ML300 now because I find the lights easier on my eyes which makes it great for general use around the home / garden / my workshop. I use my ML300 led for when I'm camping and it real remote areas where the extra light is really needed.

I'm glad people still use and appreciate Incandescents in 2021. When I got into Flashlights last year, my first was a 3D Incan Maglite and it actually surprised me. On Fresh batteries (4.5-4.8V), it has some punch to it which is amazing for a 45 Lumen bulb.
I've converted it to LED and 2x 18650s but I still like to throw in the original Krypton bulb and overdrive it with 4x Eneloops producing a beautiful Tight White Beam that can touch the trees 100m away.
Also, those 4.8V Krypton bulbs you normally use for 6 Volt Lanterns can handle 2x Li-ion cells (8.4V) but the ones I got produce Hurricane Beam which is a bummer.

The only downside to over-driving an incandescent is that you dramatically reduce their lifespan.
Most 2D bulbs (which will see around 3.6v on a fresh set of alkaline cells) will be rated for only 2.4v so that they're slightly over-run already.
Even then, they're typically rated for around 50 hours.
I still prefer the traditional glow of an incandescent though. I've got 2 of the 2D maglites and a maglite mini 2AA all incandescent. I also have the ML300LX, but I still find myself using the incandescent ones more.

Incandescent light is much closer to natural daytime light so more friendly with eyes.
Xenon is better than krypton and halogen is better than both.

And what's nice is that when the EMPs go off and all of the LED bulbs burst, your xenon and incandescent bulbs will be fine.

I keep meaning to build a rechargeable battery pack with integrated charger and output voltage regulator to convert one of my incandescent 2D maglites to be rechargeable.
A chunky LiIon cell should hold a lot more power than a couple of alkaline D cells, and having a regulated voltage output means that I wouldn't suffer brightness fade while using it.
It would be cool if I could contain the battery, charger, and regulator in a single cylinder the same size as 2D cells, so that I could still swap out for retro alkaline cells without any modification.

Make one. Go to lumencraft and get the stuff to convert one to 26650. Two 26650 should run a 6 cell bulb/lamp.

    I just like dimmer lights.
No burning out my eyes every time I turn the thing on, and even when I used LEDs I only needed about 85 lumens to highlight a tree at 400 feet away
lumens don't really scale linearly from what I can tell

I always found the problem with magcharger was the spot focusing ! I can remember having a 3D mag with those white star bulbs you could upgrade to long before leds . The good thing with incandescent is the colour rendition is better and if you use a torch a lot it's better on the eyes! And I like the fact they get warm in use. Maglite still pedal out new incandescent torches and to their cost were late in the game with LED?

Back in the day, I managed to use a 36 V 10 A projector lamp to build a flashlight with a backpack. The handheld projector was connected to a backpack made of three 12 Volt, 7 Ah gel batteries. The gizmo was able to run 30 minutes, and the light it made, was matter of legends...

The led flashlights be flickering and I had some that's still laying around that quit working or the bulb has quit working and I'm going back to incandescent flashlights and I had some when I was a kid

    • @Gieszkanne

If led flashlights are flickering, this can also be caused by a bad lithium battery.

Which gives better light in terms of natural white light between xenon and krypton? My Mags are using the krypton bulb and an led upgrade which is great but, never used one with the xenon. I always thought it was just in the states that used xenon.

    • @Vinnay94

Kryptons can handle Overdrive better. An overdriven Xenon will produce a more Whiter Throwier Light but it's hard to know when it could blow.
So yeah, just use Xenon although the Maglite Xenon bulbs have gone up quite a bit for some stupid reason.

    • @dancoulson6579
      @dancoulson6579 Год назад +1

@@fivegiga5523 Xenon is slightly brighter than krypton. A slightly whiter light too.
Halogen is better still. But realistically you don't really get halogens in such a small package - For halogen cycle to work correctly, the glass envelope of the lamp must reach around 250*c.
For one, the plastic components would melt or be damaged, and there's a good chance that you wouldn't have it on long enough to warm it up to that temperature.
I think the smallest halogen I ever saw was a small 6v flange type. They were sold in Halfords in the UK about 20 years ago, but never seen them since.

not sure about the NiMH recharables coz of voltage drop but there are dcell recharable lithium ions now (some have a usb port on them). i wonder if that would be a good use coz of constant voltage. not as good capacity usually in smaller form batteries coz of the stepdown and charge circuit stuffed in there with usb port
