Love all the family connections in this one! Now I imagine Joel interviewing potential staff and asking "is your dad or mom by any chance an electrical engineer?" : )
I know, right? best video on the internet, today (a year later).... great work family. I'm working through the Gerling Engineering videos in chorological order. This is my favorite so far 👍👍
In case no one has told you lately, you and your family are so cool. The amount of ingenuity displayed in the video is amazing. That's why open source and right to repair are so important right now.
Fascinating on more than one level for me. 1) Raspberry Pi. 2) I work for the American Academy of Neurology (a trade association for neurologists and researchers)
That's Great Joel and Fillan. As a researcher in AI and Sensory Systems Neuroscience, this has given me a few ideas to try on my mus musculus friends. Thank you Jeff for putting this together. Hope you get well enough to do what you do best.
That is so fascinating! I think it is awesome to show practical uses of the Pi and 3D printing. The cooler is like a swamp cooler. you can find instruction on how to build one on the instructable website. I am sure you are very proud of your family. Thank you for sharing.
Ha! That was under consideration, but Geerling Engineering has existed since the 90s, so we chose to adopt that name (and the original logo!) for this channel.
Another brilliant video. Your Brother, Joe stated two points that you reinforced about science and open source. I wondered why Mike, Fillian's father chose RP vs. Arduino ecosystem but his answer RE: Python made total sense; why force his son to deal with C++ and then the additional reward: Higher level code development using numpy, pandas and matplotlib.

Its not just reproduce-ability, its also the whole ethos of not reinventing the wheel, sharing findings so that we can explore a larger knowledge space. Proprietary software and hardware flies in the face of that, because you will often have to waste time re-implementing the same stuff, especially if something ends up too expensive, or it seemed more profitable to price some people out.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think mice are cute. I do wonder if the reason they're so capable is because we're training them in labs to be smarter. I'd love to see a comparison with randomly collected field mice and see how they perform. Also, I love the attitude towards open source, that's the way all science should be IMO.
We think they're pretty cute too; but I'd have to leave my brother to explain the relationship of the lab mice to an average field mouse! I know it's a huge deal the way labs deal with sourcing and breeding mice used in research.
lol. i'm a bioengineer but i used arduinos to build electromechanical controllers to automate prototype cancer diagnostic tools for delivering assays. you don't need some high powered PC, FPGA, etc... to do 'tasks' signal processing is where you need some power. raspberry pi's can do light signal processing no problem.
I believe one of those was purchased in a kit from CanaKit or something like that; it can be hard to find them right now, but if you're patient, and follow rpilocator.com or sign up for waitlists/mailing lists from the suppliers, they do come available now and then.
You might want to let your brother know that windshield wiper fluid could be used for circulation in the heater core so it won't freeze and then it could be dropped into a small fridge/freezer thru a copper coil to avoid messing with the ice water.
The fridge would need to be far enough away that the mice can't hear it, and there would need to be some sort of buffer to even out the fridge's temperature swings. It's probably just easier to use a cooler with ice.
👍🏼 Really interesting Jeff! Hope you are doing better soon! Fully agree that open source is critical for research, though it may be tough to persuade some companies and their labs of that! (Yet it's important to keep trying!) 😎✌🏼
Thank you, and yes, it seems like in the medical world, just like enterprise IT of the past decade, open source can be a hard pill for some to swallow.
I believe that Open source Ai will eventually replace elected officials with transparent human oversight. It might be a few more generations but I think it's inevitable to remove or limit the corruption in the world.
How do you discriminate single-cell excitability dependency on temperature (of CNS neurons) from system-level temperature sensing and regulation (of PNS neurons)?
WOW!!! I just LOVE learning about all the ways RaspPi's are used, ESPECIALLY in way's you would NEVER THINK!! (like the explosion proof gas sniffer from the main channel a few months ago) And then seeing a setup meeting the needs of the users with 3d-printed, off-the-shelf, 'generic' parts all while costing a SMALL fraction of what is typically used.... that just makes me SMILE!!!! I LOVE 'sticking it to the man' if you will LOL I'm all for capitalism, that IS the one of the CORE FREEDOMS of this great Nation after all. But when it is an OUTRAGEOUS COST that is preventing GOOD SCIENCE from not only being REPRODUCED but even just investigated to begin with, that is no longer just Capitalism - that is GREED. And that NEEDS to be re-thought when it come to academia. There are SOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY problems when it comes to academia, funding, and NEW SCIENCE not being able to be seen. You can't come up with a new theory that goes against the 'old guard' if it would cause you (and your entire science department) to lose funding. -- For example if you could essentially PROVE that Dark Matter 100% DOES NOT EXIST, then ALL these 100's of BILLIONS (if not TRILLIONS) of dollars that have gone into finding it were TOTALLY POINTLESS, then all the CURRENT Projects being run, AND the future projects currently being built, are TOTALLY POINTLESS AND A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. Don't you think SOMEONE that benefits from that cash flow just might try to STOP YOU from proving it? Well this MAY be the reason why MORE SCIENCE is NOT done with 'off-the-shelf' products and 'open source' code. (I'm not trying to say it is, but it was just an idea that came to me just now lol) .... Why WOULDN'T you try to spend as little as possible and WANT to share the results and procedures with the world? If it TRULY is the SCIENCE you are pursuing then then you would. But MONEY (and by nature also 'POWER') basically control science today. You CANNOT tell an 'Egyptologist' that the Ancient Egyptians absolutely could NOT cut granite with the tools they had available to them during the time period they claim (essentially copper is too soft to cut the granite that has CLEARLY been cut and iron tools had not been invented in 3000BC when 'Egyptologists' CLAIM this was all taking place) You would be SHUNNED, RIDICULED, SHAMED, and basically REMOVED from Academia if you point this out to them and tell them they are wrong - which they CLEARLY ARE! The reason why is because it would proven them ALL WRONG. And what is worse for an EGOMANIAC (which NEARLY every single 'head' of Academia is at this point) to BE WRONG or to NOT MAKE SENSE??? I would say they would RATHER NOT MAKE SENSE THEN TO ADMIT BEING WRONG. Now there are FOR SURE other AGENDAS at play here too, but Academia will NOT say that civilization is MUCH OLDER than they are claiming... even tho IT HAS BEEN PROVEN with places like Gobekli Tepe which have been PROVEN TO BE AT LEAST 12,000 YEARS OLD!! -- omg!
