NKC route 'Wild coast, wild past': day 8-9
Parking Auderville (France 50440, number 1396), free
There was no bakery nearby. We left with an empty stomach. Soon we came across a small supermarket and were able to buy a baguette. Breakfast was then served at the square roundabout of Saint-Laurant-sur-Mer.
The Cimetiere Americain in Colleville sur Mere was impressive. Like yesterday the day was all about the Canadians who stormed Juno beach on D-Day, today it was the turn of the Americans who came ashore on D-Day on Omaha beach and Utah beach. The Cimetiere Americain has a visitor center that punctuates what happened those days. The photos and movies are really coming in. The cemetery itself is equally impressive. All those Americans who lost their lives for our freedom. The US military was made up of 8 million volunteers at the time! One million lost their lives in WWII.
In Sainte-Mère-Église, the American pilot John Steel still hangs from the church tower, famous from the movie 'The longest day'. We need to watch that movie again.
We drove on to Nez de Jobourg. It was written on the field that you were not allowed to park there at night. We decided to drive on to Auderville. The motorhome, and so do we now, have a beautiful view of the lighthouse Goury from the cape.
We were fairly early so we still had time to round the Cap de la Hague. We thought we would walk on the beach, but it turned out to be a nice varied walk in a somewhat English-looking landscape.
Marja has been wanting to eat mussels for days. Several restaurants already promised to have it. Each time the restaurant turned out to be closed. Today it hit. The restaurant was actually open. We have made a reservation. We went there. But Marja ordered a menu with oysters and fish.
It does seem like the end of the world here. The phone picks up the Guernsey network here. Roaming has been applied here again since Great Britain left the EU. So we just turned it off, so we have no range. Even more difficult is the fact that the phone occasionally catches a signal and sometimes shows the British time and then the French time again.
