You have a particular talent for looking fresh at the end of races. Everyone looked like they'd been through the wars in that last km, while you looked like you were topping off an easy training run!
Thanks Yellowfolder 😄 Yeah maybe I'm focusing on too strong at the end. Need to go faster at the start. Believe me I was struggling 🥵 but trying to smile for the camera 😁 though the support makes us smile too.
Matt, thanks for bringing us along your training journey and race. Congrats on running a great 3:30 Manchester marathon. You have a lot of opportunities ahead of you, and 3:10 will happen.
Thanks Reto 😃 your welcome 😁 yeah I'm quite happy with it overall, I wasn't downbeat after. Took some effort to grind through, but more to come hopefully. Summers looking a bit thin on the race calendar for me at the moment, I need to book a few in 😃
Thank you Ben. A coach for 12 months would be good, I'm not sure I could find the time or money but I've thought about from time to time. Maybe one day 😀
Thanks Gary, yeah it was a bit warmer. No excuses from me though 😂 enjoyed it as much as the last year too 😃 How was your race, six you achieve your goal ?
Thanks Will 😃 a few people said that, which is encouraging thanks. Yeah we will go again. You were so close ! I had Boston 2025 in the back of my mind 😲 have to be the following year I think now 😞 but I think I know what I need to fix or tweak next time round, and I feel I've got my overall training structure to a place where I want it. Funny isn't it - before the race we think the training has been right, but only after we loose the race we can see the flaws 🤣🤣 I think a few Half's coming up soon
You are always so positive whatever happens. Thanks for the clip of Dawn at 10k. FWIW I dont think a faster start would have helped you in the final 10k. You need to get a Newcastle Quayside Marathon organised 😂😂😂
You I just realised I had now caffeine gels this time 😲 Usually I got 2 or 3. Yes they actually have a Newcastle Gateshead marathon this year, I think with run through, 3 lap course though and so a hill you run 3 times, maybe one day.
Well done Matt 👍 see you went through half in 1:37, its a great race support was amazing felt a bit more crowded this year on the roads though... sure 3:15 time will come, you are nearly there, maybe a focus on half mara speed and frequent 'medium-long' steady state runs with less emphasis on very long 35+ km runs.... hard to say just got to dig into the data and youll get there! Keep it going 👏👍
Thanks Ric 😄 Yeah was a cracking first half and even more so because I was holding back on the pace slightly. More to come yes, but better start making some progress soon as I'm not getting any younger 😂
Slow down at the start - you will always feel good in first half but then get ambushed by something later if perhaps gone even few %s to fast - took me 11 attempts to get to 3.15 so I've learnt from experience!
Thanks Neil, I'd actually held back a bit in comparison to last year and had around 3hr15 in my mind if the 3hr10 wasn't on, but that's how it goes. Maybe slowdown even more next time 😂
@RunThePlanet sometimes it's just one of those days and you can't pinpoint one particular reason. I know I have had races where all looked great even up to 20 miles than faded badly despite good training and nutrition. Great race though
Thanks Gummer 😃 yes there's always the next race. For now it's time to have a short break and let the body recover before going again. We're a sucker for it 😂
Thank you Paul 🙂 Well I am slightly disappointed with time but not too much 😁 There's positives to take from this, and 3 years ago if you'd have offered me a 3hr30 today, id have taken it 😁 Been chasing 3hr10 for a while now so still there's work to do. But I'm already thinking about the next one, how I want to train, what I need to do. First I'll rest up 🥱 put the body back together before we go again.
@@Paulrunsdaily thank you Paul 😄 Probably the only time I spat my dummy out was Valencia last december, and that only lasted a few minutes 🤣 I had to force it a bit at the end but when we see that finish line it gets easier. Sub3 seems far away at the moment, but I'll keep trying 🙂
Congrats Mat! Not the best time for you but still it was a marathon - it's always huge effort and to be honest - really good performance (even if you think otherwise :) ). So congrats again!
Thanks Leszek 😀 so let's say best marathon of the year then 😂 ...so far. Ive got to find another one...🤔 But a little break will help alot and some smaller events coming up to keep me keen
@@RunThePlanet yes, good idea! I'm running marathons only twice a year to avoid overtraining... in between I'm running shorter distances. We have Consittution Day on 3rd May - will run 5K on that day in Warsaw - I also encourage you to try such shorter races now (after resting of course!)
@@LeszekDeska I know many go for the 5k and 10k. I did 20min a while ago in the 5k but find it too short to keep going at it (lazy in a way maybe) but I'll maybe do a 10k or 2. But really enjoy the half marathons too.
@@RunThePlanet me too, I already signed up for two races: that Consitution Run and "Bieg Ursynowa" (eng. Ursynów Run), both 5K. Will look for some half still this year and I need to prepare for Valencia this December :)
Thanks Harry 😁 It was a great day overall, such a good marathon is Manchester. Conditions were great, maybe slightly warm near the end but I didn't notice it too much, the weather gods were with us I think
Hi Matt, great video and you looked really composed in that footage, 3:30 is still a great time😊I was there and was sure I’d see you at the 4 and 6 mile marks but I just couldn’t spot you, I managed to see and film @thewu and @harryruns1. If I can find out your actual start time (Strava) I can check my footage more carefully but I’m thinking you might have been buried in that huge 3:15 pack. Did 39K on the bike and went to 6/7 more watch points and the recovery zone but no joy, sorry I missed you😕 Anyway it was such a great day, I’ll be putting together a video from my perspective, chasing down back roads and canals to get ahead😂 I’m doing Manchester 1/2 in October too, my first 1/2😀
Thanks Andy, and thanks for your efforts. Yes I think I was in that 3hr15 pack for a while, I'd love to know what time he finished, 3hr12 I recon. I started 9am20 or that was the schedule. Good you caught Wu and the others 😃 39k on the bike, phenomenal!!
@@RunThePlanet No problem at all, I’ve just rechecked the footage at 4 and 6 miles based on your splits but still can’t understand why I didn’t catch you🤔It was a great day though, weather was perfect and the atmosphere was brilliant. Well done Matt✅
Thanks Simon 😁 it was slightly. I'm not sure if it felt too warm for me but it's a bit later than earlier years and I've been at colder MCR marathons. Well done getting round though 😀
Thanks John 😁 missed you this time, as you were flying along ahead of me with that massive PB, I see a sub3 coming for you soon. When's your next one or is it top secret for now ?
@RunThePlanet Manchester next year I'm booked on .I'll only do one marathon this year .a couple of half marathon planned near me ,Derby and Worcester I think and some 10k. What's next for you mate?
Sept GNR, but I will look to book some others in between, I'm thinking of maybe one 10k and some half's. I missed out on the Edinburgh half this year, that would have been nice.

Thank you Donato ! We looked for you at the end but I'm sure you'd gone by then 😄 May have looked fresh but didn't feel it that much 😃
@@RunThePlanet i was around for a while, but was a massive crowded area so easy to miss each other. Next time!

Good training block. I’m convinced you’re capable of running a much faster time than that. I’d love to see you get a coach for 12mths.
