I was the ATC who did the sound and vision mixing on this. When we faded to black the loggist came out crying and saying "Oh Jim, I have never heard anything so beautiful".
Steve Green So simple and sincere. The more I see of the old Granada, the more I realise that it, and the people that worked there, were something special.
AndyPearce100 Yes, they certainly did everything differently. If the majors said black Granada would say white...It didn't endear them to many in London though.
Michael Walker Agreed. I guess that is why I find it so hard to understand that having successfully aquired Carlton to form ITV plc, they abandoned Quay Street, having moved pretty-much all studio production to the South Bank. For such a "Northern-centric" company, what remains of Granada at Salford Quays is a mere shadow what it once was.
What a lovely, sincere tribute to Pat Phoenix. Not having grown up in the north I don't know this presenter but he comes across as genuinely warm, sorry to hear fro other comments here that he too has gone. We are all on the planet for such a short time - sorry to sound soppy, but we really should be kinder to each other.
Beautiful by Jim Pope. As a boy I remembered his continuity work on University Challenge and Granada Closedowns. An amazing voice and a very kind and sensitive man. Sleep with the angels Jim xx
I did actually watch this when it happened as a mere lad of 19,and probably thought it was the most moving tribute of all to Pat Phoenix that day. It's extraordinary that it's turned up again nearly three decades later.R.I.P Pat and of course Gentleman Jim.
I remember writing a letter to the Granada head of presentation, David Black, about something or other, and was surprised not only to get a letter back from Mr Black but letters and photos from the announcers (other than Graham James). The most detailed and kind letter was from Jim Pope.
I came back to this video yesterday after also hearing the sad news about Anne Kirkbride, wondering how tonight's closedown might have been. However Granada Reports did a wonderful tribute today to her, taking up almost the entire programme. If you wish to view it I have uploaded it to my channel. A sad day for television.
I left the UK and moved with my family to New Zealand in 1995. My grandmother came out and visited a few times. Always made me sad when she went back to England. The last time I saw her was in early 2004. She came out and visited again for the last time. She never visited again after 2004. Towards the end of her life she was unwell and had Alzheimers and in March 2019, 15 years after I last saw, she died. I loved my grandmother and I am devastated she's gone. She lived had a good long 89 year life and it's a real shame I never saw her again and now it is too late. May she rest in peace.
Beautiful words about loss and regret by Jim Pope. So moving and touching when he said "And now it's too late", so moving and touching. Brought a tear to my eye.
As a kid watching Granada I always thought Jim Pope was a miserable bugger (compared to Weston and Foster) but still liked him. This tribute is fantastic.
ITV is too far gone today, privatised, national identity and sold off to bunch of idiotic cowboys who have NO idea at all what constitutes a good broadcaster at all. Blame Thatcher and her 1990 Broadcasting Act for the wholesale destruction of commercial television and commercial radio.
No one closes down these days though..its all been 24/7 for years..even Good Morning Britain is just a tv show and not its own station like tv-am or GMTV
@@SiBanstead89 since the late 80's itv went 24h but they filled the time with cheap b movies, trashy American programmes and TV series etc. Hardly worth a good use of overnight broadcast hours.

Beautiful indeed. I hadn't realised Jim died back in 2001. The closedown music is particularly moving with this is mind.

We should but some people can't do that.
I agree I mean it doesn’t hurt to be nice
Jim Pope the clunker
Apparently the staff were in tears when he said this.
@@GaryDuncanson-s4g That's lovely, I believe it. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful words by Jim Pope about loss and regret. 1:17 "And now it's too late" So moving and touching.
Well. Since then. Jim Pope passed away himself. So, he can bump into Pat Phoenix and thank her in heaven. R.I.P
This is in my opinion, one of the best closedowns of all time,Jim Pope reflecting on the death of his good friend Pat Phoenix, back in September 1986

+Jonathan Bridge Yes, really lovely to see it, that rare thing, a moment of sincerity on TV!
You could see the genuine emotion in him when he said that. ❤

Hope you kept that letter David . Jim Pope was a ledge at Granadaland
What did Jim Pope say to you in his letter?
I liked Jim Pope. One of the nicest Granada announcers in vision. I like also the autumn graphic around the Granada logo.
Firstly I didn’t realise Granada had invision continuity announcers. Secondly what a very personal and moving tribute from him.
Jim Pope - Granada Television Legend!
What a perfect gentleman Jim was
when i did ah he did vo
a very classy guy
One wonders what tonight's closedown would have been like, having heard the sad news about Anne Kirkbride earlier.

GRANADA continuity closedown in vision NEIL FITZGERALD
My late Father was so sad when Pat Phoenix died. South of England disabled carrer. GOD BLESS!
Jim Pope is your late father. He passed away in 2001.
Debbie Parkes I think he knows smh
@@debbieparkes3588 If Jim Pope was his father. Why is his last name Simpson?
Loved Jim Pope the clunker. Much missed......from a child of granada land
He looks like he's about to cry. Poor sod

Poor man. I myself lost myself grandmother 3 months ago. I hadn't seen her for 15 years.
It's something that left me with depression and deep regret.

I'm shocked that he actually made it through telling you to turn off your television set.
He had to, otherwise he wouldn't have been professional.
As a kid watching Granada I always thought Jim Pope was a miserable bugger (compared to Weston and Foster) but still liked him. This tribute is fantastic.
Actually, he was a very nice man - and a great voice for promos. Yes, that is a very touching sign-off, and it is so sad that he is no longer with us.
BRING BACK THE OLD GRANADA LOGO & CLOCK AT CLOSE DOWN WITH CONTINUITY ANNOUNCER

She was the British Loren.
35 years ago today
Probably something like that I would imagine
Jim Pope passed away on 18th August 2001.
I presume it would have been a little tasteless to do the QQ wipe on this occasion!
Fall era festival
We should do them on trade descriptions act here fresh fields isnt a comedy.
Jim's tribute to Pat could had inspired the sad Rowley Birkin sketch in The Fast Show.

Splitting hairs here….but he would have had a few months to contact her. Her terminal illness was well-publicized
