Good info from Greg. One thing I would add when I used to ship is to put a piece of cardboard on the top of the quilt in the box so that if someone uses scissors or box cutter to open the box they won’t cut the quilt.
I have shipped gift quilts for many years, and rarely did I put them in plastic bags. After watching this video, I will be from now on. Please thank Gregg for preparing this great info for us on shipping quilts. PS - I've been very lucky - none damaged or lost in all these years. I loved seeing all of the posts in the group for our "oldest" things - so many beautiful posts, and you showed some of my favorites.
I wish I could garden today but we got over 36 inches of snow yesterday with more to come. So I’ll be organizing my quilt room looking at all my beautiful fabrics instead! ❤️❤️
Michelle,...... you must love snow. LOL I'm in central Indiana and I'm so over the chilly air and so much rain. I don't know what I'd do with snow this late in the season. At least you can sew or fondle the fabrics. LOL
I shipped a quilt to my daughter in Australia & I first put it into one of those plastic bags that you can suck the air out of to make it flatter. I then put it into a large envelope to save on shipping. It was perfect when she received it & took it out of the plastic bag.
@@meltemsa I was really careful folding & my daughter said it was fine when she took it out of the packaging. I sent her a message & asked her to take it out as soon as she got it.
Flowering shade plants that deer don't eat are few. Lilies of the valley, but they can be invasive. Astilbe is a pretty perennial that flowers and has fern like leaves. Coral bells are nice, the blooms are short lived but the leaves come in a multitude of colors. Evergreen ferns don't flower but can be a nice background. Liriope flowers and comes in either dark green or variegated foliage. So far the deer have not eaten any of these on my property. Why can't the deer eat the weeds, they also go for the most expensive plants first.
I was doing really well with my UFO schedule and then got side-lined with food poisoning last weekend. Still very weak and haven't touched my quilting yet. Maybe tomorrow. I was so proud of myself, too.
Thank you Pat for the useful information about shipping a quilt. After all the work that goes into making a quilt, I feel like they need a " private escort " to wherever they are going. 👮😄
When my husband and daughter were living in India they would have their clothes sent out to be washed. The company used old irons that were filled with coal so their clothes came back smelling like smoke. hahaha Very interesting to see all the old items people are holding onto. Love all those sewing machines!
Sorry pat ,no gardening today . Windy , windy ,cold nasty in Reno NV. But I did get 2 raise beds of potatoes in ground . Last week . Did get 2 baby UFO done .
My first long arm quilter was in Iowa and she returned shipped in fertilizer boxes. They smelled like manure. Her name was Jane and she needed the money. We had a chat. I used her for years.
Thanks Pat and Greg for all the good information on shipping a package. I thought I had asked a stupid question when I received the comment back. This helps so much as I am new to everything to the shipper, to a type of box, labels, insurance, lost item, etc. So helpful.
My husband cleaned my vegetable beds but the reality is we could still have a frost. We had hail last week. Probably no planting until Mother's Day. However, I am planning where to put everything so that is a start. Last year when I planted it was like opening a restaurant ...... for deer. Oh they enjoyed everything and they were so smart; they always got to my vegetables before I did.
Thank you and Greg for listing important information on shipping packages and our precious quilts. I will be shipping some quilts to my grand children in Dec. I live in Texas and they live in Wisconsin. I've been wondering about how to ship them.
Perfect timing on how to ship a quilt for me. I have a quilt to send to my nephew's baby in Mn. I will read the article and may be able to ship it today. Thanks once again.
Thanks for the great shipping tips. I usually drive 30 minutes to drop mine off at my longarm quilter. Luckily, I have only gifted quilts to family members so I hand deliver them. I have thought about using a different longarm quilter at times when mine is really backed up and I would probably have to mail it off in that case so this is good info to have.
I MUST have those socks! I am picking up my first NUC (Queen Bee and her workers already established on a frame) next weekend then another NUC first weekend in May....Finally getting into Bee keeping! Love all things BEE💛🍯🐝
All very valuable info. Never thought of putting quilt in a bag before mailing. I mail things to family all the time. I will start doing that. Thank your shipping department for all the great advice! 🙂
The string holder is from retail stores or grocery stores. When purchases were wrapped in brown paper. I have one from a family drug store in St. Louis, MO.
I gardened this morning! Planted some beautiful shade tolerant plants. I finished my UFO yesterday and can’t work on the next one until my batting arrives so I get to start a new project that is in the line up!
Gregg, thank you for the great information on shipping. I have a son and his family in another state. I often ship their items in a box, but first in clear plastic bags with the label showing through the clear bag. I hope that I can always give my quilts in person, but if I need to ship, I will use your steps. Pat, for the garden, I recommend peonies in the front yard. The deer don't eat them. When they are done blooming, there's plenty of green for much of the summer. Happy Gardening, Quilting, and Shipping!
I agree with you on UFO's as I have a few that just need binding and they are not readily visible so I forget about them. I am going to make a list this weekend so I can make sure that one gets finished each week!
Did I hear birds chirping in the background? Guess they were celebrating gardening🪴 day too 😊 Thanks for the shipping advice… I always hold my breath when I put one in the mail! From now on… plastic bag with added address inside!
Someone mentioned marigolds as deer don't like them (also they keep many plant pests from your other plants, especially aphids, and they're good to plant with tomatoes) but make sure to smell them before purchasing. Some variations of marigolds don't have a scent.
I stopped buying fabric from an online shop out west that just put the fabric in the envelope. Received my order on my front porch sopping wet from the rain last year.
A plastic zipper bag, not a plastic shopping bag with handles. We used to be able to get get great bags at Dollar Tree but since their reorganization they discounted the line. 😢
I have a question about the shipping of quilts for Mr. Greg. Can I just print a label from my home printer with my name and recipients name and address on it? Where, or who, creates the bar code you speak of as being necessary on the label? I've got 2 quilts I'd like to mail but need more advice on how to do that!
Oh, Pat, I'm so sorry for my poorly trained fellow Postal workers. Your wet (damp) quilt issue was handled so wrong in more ways than one. I'm glad the quilt wasn't ruined.
Good info from Greg. One thing I would add when I used to ship is to put a piece of cardboard on the top of the quilt in the box so that if someone uses scissors or box cutter to open the box they won’t cut the quilt.
I learned this from a longarmer and now I do the same thing. Excellent advice!

Same here lol! Sick of looking at the white stuff. Soon... Cheers from🇨🇦🍁
We didn't get the snow but the Temps are 18 and just above freezing. Gardening is on hold until May.
@@shirleythomas6377 OMG!!! 18? I’m freezing at 40 something! 🥶. Me and Arthur (arthritis) don’t like this!!

That's what I'm thinking too..I have a savings plan for shipping to other countries..wasn't the quilt wrinkled when it came out?

Very good information on shipping quilts. Thank you
Thank you to Greg and Pat. The shipping info is very helpful.
Thank you Greg! Great advice, I did not think about including the TO & FROM on the inside of the package.
The picture you showed with the ball type and holder was use to hold butcher twine at the meat shop.to wrap the packages of meat
Great practical advice, Mr. Greg! Thank you so much!

I heard if you put human hair in the plant it keeps them away. like when you get your hair cut uses the trimmings. i have never tried it 😮
Fun and informative Pat! I've wanted to mail a quilt but hv been afraid. These tips helped.

Deer ear EVERYTHING
Been snowing since Monday, no gardening for me, but quilting and sewing always
Another great video with lots of wonderful information! Thank you for sharing and your happy energy!
deer don't eat bleeding hearts, but they don't last all summer. Mine look great now, and they multiply quickly.

Thank you Pat and Gregg for your most helpful shipping information. Although I'm in Canada, this info pertains to us as well. Again, 😊
Hi Pat! The shares of old things was fantastic!!!
Thank you for the very informative lesson on how to send a quilt. It's really a good idea on how to ship most things.

add marigolds to your plants. deer don't like the smell or taste. Mom always put irish spring soap in her pots. they dont like that either.
You have to smell the marigolds before purchasing - some variations don't have a scent.

The US has some fantastic fabric however it has s very expense vet to have it sent to the UK.
Great information, Pat. A few months back you mailed a quilt that got lost. Did you ever get it back?
it was many many months ago, and I did report back to you that it was never recovered.
Thank you for the video. I was wondering what was the quilting design on the woodland wonderland behind you? What is your design wall made with?
go to the search bar at my youtube channel and put in Design Board for my video on it
Hi. Have you ever lost a quilt? Do you insure your quilts and how do you determine how much without an appraisal? And do you edit your own videos?

you sign into the post office website and print it. So you have to create an account. Or take to a mailing center to do it for you
I normally ship with a carrier that asks what is in the package. My reply is "linens". I mean who wants to steal sheets or towels.... 🥴
After a heartbreaking incident, I would also urge people not to use garbage bags to ship quilts in, unless they are clear.
I see a lot of people save selvage. What do you do with them?? Am I missing something that I can be using mine for?
She is going to make a quilt or something from them at a later date
you make quilts!

What don’t deer eat? They are hungry critters.
Put marigolds I used them n the deer didn't like them
Rabbits ate my marigolds! Unbelievable.
