And it's legal in Australia! Only because the politicians don't know what it is. If they knew what a shepherds sling or a staff sling was it would be on the list of "controlled weapons".
What he means is hes ashamed that it has come to using a staff sling instead of more practical weapons because the government is afraid of them.@@itwasaliens
No, in order for it to be an effective bludgeon, it will have to be solid and very top heavy (think of a hammer or mace) and the wooden material of the staff will have to be ultra resistant and strong, making the sling difficult to use and make, which kinda goes against its main purpose Using the prod as a stabbing tool is a terrible idea as well as it can seriously damage the prod itself, rendering the sling useless
Love the idea of the bent spike on the end instead of carving a notch at the end of the staff. Seems like your idea is better because it would have a cleaner release and less friction. Is that a nail you used on the end of your staff to hook the string to?
Some people say that David used a staff sling in the Bible, because he took his staff to face Goliath, but I have serious doubts about this statement. The shepperd sling was very common in the Mediterranean in ancient times, used by greeks, romans, assyrians, babylonians, egyptians and celts, and is still used today in the Middle East by young people. The staff sling, on the other hand, was a siege weapon, and as far as I know there are no references to it being used in the region in ancient times. It makes no sense for a young shepherd to use a siege weapon when the common sling is still used today by children taking care of livestock. The staff was probably a way of symbolizing David's status as a humble shepherd.
@@babybirdhome Hmm , makes sense unfortunately, here in Canada the winter is set to begin at any time. According to the weather network, maybe even this week some time. Oh well, I guess its on the back burner until next spring. Ill let you know if I get any better at it.
i think that it is quite a redundant weapon because after playing around with staff slings and regular shepherds slings ive found that the stall sling is less powerfull, less accurate, hader to carry, harder to make and very difficult to aim when compared to the shepherd sling

Yeah man, Im soo glad its legal to use sling.... big government ban so many other weapons its sad
Lol yeah maybe but unless they ban sticks and string I think you guys are good 😂. My shepherds sling I use like a belt 🤷♂️
@@danielreardon6453 I can't tell that first part was sarcastic or not lol

Could one theoretically make effective use of the staff as a bludgeon or use the prod in the end as a stabbing tool?
For sure!
cmon man is that a serious question.
Whats your max distance Vs acccuracy ?
No idea, I’ve never measured or attempted max range/accuracy. It’s pretty accurate out to 50 yards though. Results vary based on projectile.

Love the sound of children playing in the background. What an incredible blessing!
Awesome demo! Thanks
Love you, dad

Little Henry hasn't come home for tea
Any videos u can suggest on how to make one?
I don’t know of any, sorry. There must be something though. I looked at some historical art and went from there.
@@TheSirjustyn ok well thnx anyway. I'll try what you did
I know I’m a year late but Primitive Technology has a great video on making a sling. I’m sure you can tie in it to a staff like in this video
It’s a Kender hoopak staff from Dragon Lance
Thanks for sharing .
I made 1 of these one summerand had a lot of fun using it. Its just that I could not effectively aim at anything. Whats the trick ?
1. A lot more practice
2. Consistent ammo - if your projectiles vary in shape, size, and weight, you’re never going to learn your weapon because of #1

Who have the 1400s freeman a phone?
You can use telescope tube . Nice 👍 and a old weapon.
You think shepherds may have had a contraption like this on the end of shepherd’s crooks? That might’ve been too much of a hassle if I think about it
They do many sheep herders still use staff slings to chase off wolves to this day 😊
@@tacoboy2218 sick. That’s really cool actually

As a bonus if you find yourself in close combat you an kill your enemy by tetanus with the rusty iron prod.
Look up the technique for long distance carp fishing casting- will put umpf into the staff.
