Fun fact the lyrics where originally about needing a friend but they thought that friend/친구 didn't flow that well.. as other comments have mentioned HYYH era was the start of BU which is a fictional storyline that plays out through various media forms. It mainly centers themes of mental health. Xceleste has a video that explains the time line of the bu and I'm sure you can find lists of videos that fall under this umbrella if you want to watch them first. There is a lot of media but don't feel too overwhelmed since ARMY also has many resources that can help you delve into it. Wings solos and solo short films are my favorite BU media personally.

The BU videos tell multiple stories, especially with the visuals. One aspect of this video is that each of the boys represents a hardship or difficulty that a lot of people, especially young people, tend to face. This video sets up these scenarios but more information is added in later videos that help make their situations more clear. RM represents poverty. Jimin represents depression, J-Hope represents drug addiction, including prescription drug addiction, JK represents homelessness, and V represents domestic abuse. As you said, major issues that are all shown in one video. With Jin, it also represents how someone going through these things tends to hide them as much as they can, so their friends may not know what they're going through. The mirror of that is that you don't know what people are going through, even if you're close friends. As you both noticed. Be warned, the stories in the BU are very sad and gut-wrenching. Investing in tissues is a very good idea.
From what I understand, JK's story is more about a kid whose family doesn't really care about him because of a blended family that favors other children and leaves him abandoned in a way.

The BU is the biggest emotional roller coaster. Every fan is you when they hit the BU and yes it should have a content warning but it also is unexpected from “a boy band”. The lyrics got changed to sound “better” to I need you girl but it was supposed to be I need you friend but it’s about how we grow with our friends through the real trials we all face. And poor Jin is the observer him or spoiler he tries to save everyone) it’s also non liner story telling the whole thing is beautiful but sooo confusing. They really want to say these thing happen and yes they tackle the challenges youth are really facing from poverty, mental health, loneliness, being lost, feeling helpless, cyber bullying, abuse, bullying etc. Big virtual hugs if it helps know these songs and stories helped people feel seen understood and to start healing.
One thing to add is that the lyric says "I need you girl" but it's not necessarily about a girl. Friend would also fit but not work as a lyric. One helpful tip might be to know The Most Beautiful Moment in Life series is about youth but not just the good parts, it's also about the chaos and struggles that happen in our youth.

Yes! The beginning of the BU! The members are happiest together but alone they are each struggling with various situations. The BU is separate from the members in real life. Prologe and Run are next and you'll see more of their storey. And to clear up, V stopped his father from further abusing his sister.

I've been ARMY for three years now, but have never really delved into the BU. I just enjoy their songs at face value. At 63, I think I think I might not have the energy I would need to do all the digging I would have to do to completely understand the complexities of the storyline! Haha! But I LOVE this song! It's very much worth it to dig into it. I'm 50 and I completely understand how you feel, but, if you've ever been affected by any mental health struggles, it's almost cathartic. Plus, it's great storytelling. And you don't have to do all the content to get it. I've never played the BU game, but I think I have a good grasp on the storyline from the MVs and webtoon. Plus, x Celeste does great summaries of all the other stuff so you don't have to read the books, etc .
It does seem like it will take some effort to really dig in and understand lol!!! But enjoying the music is always very important too💜😄

@@BetterGreta13 im 19 years old and honestly im too busy to dive into all the BU content. all i have done is just listen to all of their songs, but i watched XCeleste’s video on a summary of the whole thing and she actually goes into depth and the whole thing is just an hourish long. i understand the whole storyline now and whenever i go back and watch BU music videos i understand it, it feels somewhat rewarding to know the underlining story that is being told to a few who take the time to dive into it. i highly recommend doing what i did ! you wont regret. have a great day army 💜

I hope you two continue with the BU....it is literally some of the best visual storytelling I have ever seen (I'm 62). It is soooooo gorgeous and well-done and the boys' acting is phenomenal. You won't be disappointed, but be prepared for LOTS of emotions and for NOT getting all the pieces to the puzzle until very late in the story. Don't get frustrated with it, just enjoy the ride. The effort that went into every aspect of it is incredible. My only tip: As with this video, the storyline is basically told with the VIDEO, not the song lyrics (mostly). Watch the visuals carefully, and you'll see the clues. It's really worth it.
I feel like it would be important to note that you can appreciate all of their music and almost all of their videos (probably aside from short films and some intros) without any knowledge of BU. I mean, it's nice to know the whole picture, but BU content never appears in lyrics, and even the visuals that are connected to storyline are very subjective and you can always find second and third meaning in it, just like in any art. 😉
Just so you know and don't feel pressured about knowing everything about the story!) Obviously, it is quite interesting if you like this kind of stuff, but definitely not necessary.💜
I agree! The music and lyrics are beautiful. But I feel like they would like to do interpretations as well so if they want to listen to a song which has an accompanying BU MV then they might want to view a lyric video or a live performance. Why start your BU journey with the crib notes when some very vibrant and cryptic storytelling is waiting to challenge and reward you? The BU is complex so is like a puzzle, satisfying and engaging. This music video was essentially an introduction to the cast of characters and their circumstances. I think until you at least have gone through Wings era BU you would be depriving yourself of the art OG ARMY absorbed in real time. While explaining the story ahead of time makes life easier, you will lose the vibrancy of your imaginations to reward you through interpretation and novel experience. Falling down the BU rabbit hole is most definitely a one-way trip. It gets more and more mindblowing the deeper you go into it and realize all the planning and thought that goes into it

One thing that should be watched for story purposes right after is the onstage prologue, I see a lot of people who don’t end up watching it because it’s not an mv but for future MVs like run it kinda adds more a slight bit more context
This MV was very chocking when it came out. Mental health is not talked about like this in South Korea. The BU is really in the end a story about the importance of self love. There’s a lot of different content in the BU that you may not be able to find online. I recommend a BU-Summary video. Xceleste has a great one! ❤

*First, the song's lyrics aren't really connected to the MV. The scenes in the mv are all from the Bangtan Universe.
*Hobi's pills aren't for the s-word but he's actually suffering from Manchausen syndrome which is often caused by parental neglect and rooted from childhood trauma. Hobi's character was abandoned by his mother when he was just a little child. He was left at the amusement park with just a bar of Snickers which was also referenced in the Fake Love MV.
*There were indications of s-word for the characters of Suga, Jimin and Jungkook.
- Suga's mom died in a fire and he attempted to do the same with himself in the story.
-Jimin had a traumatic experience when he was a child which took a toll on his health so he was always confined in a hospital.
-Jungkook, like Suga, also attempted to s-word.
*V's character has an abusive father and he k-word him when he saw him beating his sister.
There are tons more to unpack about the BU. But you can get there when you're ready. It's ok to just enjoy the music for now.

With this MV BTS continued their tradition of talking about issues other Kpop acts didn't talk about. This one really got to the heart of people and represents the real start of BTS Rise. A lot of people felt represented, seen, including myself. As so many comments said this song is not really about a romantic relationship, it is about needing someone, a friend, to be there. The MV show us that these friends can't be there all the time and they also have their own hardships no one knows about.

So the best way to understand everything is reading the most beautiful moment in life pt. 1 and pt.2 for the BU because when I watch the videos and short films shit wasn’t adding up until I bought the books and actually read it and I was like okay and then rewatching the music videos that follows the story I was like damn everything makes so much more sense 😂welcome to the BU 💜
If you don’t have the time to read the books (because they are a lot I broke down many times reading those books but they are so good) you can watch Xceleste two summary videos she summarized a lot of the story great and show visuals from the m/v so you may want to wait till after you watch the other videos like run or young forever but also without context the songs hit but watching the mv can be quite confusing like I need u was hella wild without context

FYI, the camera on the live performance panned away from JK’s choreography at times so you may want to watch a JK focus-cam video later if interested. Just avoid the one by HEADLINER because the creator is a saesang (stalker) of JK’s who has been blacklisted by BigHit/HYBE. The channel still gets lots of views though because the videos are high definition and many aren’t aware of the creator’s history.

The BU is an amazing story line and keeps your brain immersed. If you dive into the journey you must cap it off with the books "The Notes" 1 and 2. Most people say to check out the fan made summaries but you really don't need those.

Fun fact: Bangtan said that the original lyrics said "I need u friend" but it didn't sound that good so at the end they decided to change it to "I need u girl" but knowing, that the music video now makes more sense with the actual lyrics. 💜
I need u is still one of my favorite MVs.. It's SO good! 🔥 I remember that I was so in shock when I watched it for the first time and it got me in my feelings too. These are topic that were not and are still not common in the kpop industry and when BTS came with this just... wow.
And yes, this is the beginning of the BU. Oh wow, finally getting into the BU. If you deep dive (and I am assuming you all will want to eventually) prepare yourself mentally before going into this. The music video does not really go along with the song in a sense. Some scenes seem like its a totally different story, but at the same time you can interpet the song where where the music video makes sense. For example, instead of a romantic love maybe platonic or self-love. Jin and V are very important in the BU and Jin is a pivotal character. There is soooo much symbolism in this video. The BU really is a sensitive place for many people, especially since this is where you find a lot of the "they discuss issues such as mental health" etc. content. When I say traumatic, I mean the gut-wrenching, heart- shattering, momentary lapse in all common sense where you have to stop and tell yourself this never really happened to the boys and take a break. because WOW did they think through this storyline SO well. Somone mentioned what the boys stood for and Xceleste's explanation videos. Pleasee. If you want sanity going through this lol, go to her videos for explanations because it's a lot. Also, one of your favorite songs, Fake Love, is heavily tied with the BU. The snickers scene with Hobi... yeah. It wasn''t just randomly thrown in there. The sister video to I Need You is the "Run" MV. It continues the stories of the boys in I Need You and connects some dots. Now, for any confusion.
1. The man V stabbed was his father. The dad was abusing his sister and he walked in on it.
2. RM lives in poverty so yeah... actually you were pretty spot on with your breakdown.

BTS BU contents are scattered like crazy on different platforms. Like pieces of puzzles. There were parts you can find on MVs marked with *BU content certified by Big Hit. Some are released as notes on twitter and mini books that come with specific albums. And some are released as webtoons. So if you wanna understand the BU a bit more, I suggest you check out XCeleste's explanation videos.
So you'll find any love song before this era "the most beautiful moment" was a love song. At this point on, if you think it's a love song then that's the most shallowest part of it. There will be meanings of relationships to be romantic, familial, friendship and/or about the relationship you have for your self. But as songs are art and is subjective, if you find something meaningful to it for yourself, then the song did its job 😄

YESSS we’re getting into the HYYH lore era!! I think it’s best if you guys react blindly (or mostly blind bc you’ve seen teasers from the rise of bangtan ofc) to all the mvs from now on that connect in terms of lore, and then reacting to a more recent lore explanation on the BU bc it is truly amazing and sooo well thought out and executed, it’s amazing to see how every little thing in almost every single mv of theirs is connected in the BU. Most lore explanation videos on the BU are kinda long (like rise of bangtan long) but they do a really good job in explaining things that are unclear when you initially watch them mvs and provide hardcore theories. The lore goes even beyond the mvs! They have a webtoon (basically a Korean vers. of manga). I’m really excited to see you guys deep dive into the BU and anything bts related (official or fan-made)
ALSO!! Since you have the proof album, you guys should definitely give a listen to CD #3 as it contains demo versions of existing songs as well as brand new songs. Supposedly they were only be meant to be listened to on the CD itself but I think some were uploaded on the BangtanTV channel, however I think it’s best to listen to them through the CD itself just to give it that special feel of listening to it through a CD player as it was meant to be experienced. One of the confusing parts is the title. The girl really isn't part of it. RM said he used the girl because friend didn't flow well because the song is about friendships. Also when it comes to the BU, the songs are secondary. The videos are more involved in the BU than the corresponding song. Some songs have a little relevance but not really. This was the first video in the BU so you are supposed to be a bit confused on who is who and why some things are happening. So we aren't going to tell you anything unless you SPECIFICALLY ask about the storyline.

Yes it is the beging of the BU. It is its own rabbit hole one I find myself falling down again and again. There is also the notes as well in a webtoon.
This song is beautiful. The composition of all of the singing parts is perfect. Jungkook and Jimin’s high notes in the chorus are wondrous give the chorus just that little something to make it unforgettable. I also really like how V’s and Jin’s singing parts lead up to the chorus. Everything about this song just pulls you in and refuses to let you go until the final second. The transitions are perfect.
The story at the root of the song is a story of youth. BTS explores the dichotomy of angst and optimism, love and hate, and anxiety and fearlessness that defines the teenage experience. "I need you, girl. Why do I need you when I know it hurts me?" they sing. "I Need U" further plays up the horrors of young relationships and trauma by pulling inspiration from R&B tunes to build an atmosphere of heartbreak and longing. The whole MV is an allegory of the hardships of growing up, abuse and mental health. This whole video focuses on each of the BTS members at their worst, as they struggle with pain, depression, abuse and anger. While they may be fine when with their friends, each of the members are completely miserable and vulnerable when alone. All of their stories were so real, that I can’t help but be so touched by each one. This video is so moving, and it portrays the raw emotions of each member so well.
The juxtaposition between the members’ happy moments with each other and sad moments alone is really what makes this such an impactful video. In one moment, we see Suga and Jungkook cuddling in front of a fire, and in the next we get the image of Jimin submerging himself underwater. It is dramatic changes like this that make the meaning of the video so vivid: when they are together, they can be as happy and carefree as they want, but once they are alone and behind closed doors, their worlds come crashing down.
BTS have said that “‘I NEED U’ shows you the good amongst the bad and “RUN” shows you the bad amongst the good”.
"My life's ruined all because of you. I'm so done with it, I don't want you anymore,". They then break into a chorus of "I need you, girl. Why do you love me and leave me all by yourself? I need you, girl." Sounds like they're having a hard time making their mind up about this girl, huh? Well, when RM wrote the lyrics he initially intended the lyrics to be "I need you friend", but if you sing it like that it doesn't sound good, so he changed it to "I need u girl", but the real meaning is that “I need u friend”, so it's a breakup song and at the same time it fits into the Bangtan Universe storyline. You need to watch all the MV's in order to understand the storyline. It's almost like a puzzle but lemme tell you it will blow your mind. The storyline itself is very deep.
RM - Works in a gas station (which he hates), the clients treat him like shit (throwing money on the ground instead of giving it to him) and imagery of him smoking.
Jin - in a room alone, Jin burns away his flower petals, the last images of beauty that he owns. He is a very important character in the storyline of this MV and other MVs. (All the MVs under the same storyline can be found by looking at the description of the videos, they are marked with "BU content certified by Big Hit Entertainment”).
Suga - in a motel, missing someone (scene in the bed), buys gasoline and burns the room with himself inside (suicide).
J-Hope - is sick and needs meds (apparently suffers from narcolepsy, he actually has munchausen’s syndrome), but abuses the drugs and passes out in the sidewalk of a road from an overdose.
Jimin - in the bathtub burning a photo (his memories), he seems in distress , desolate and scared. Tries to drown himself.
V - catches his dad (an alcoholic) abusing his sister, in anger and adrenaline he starts stabbing his dad and kills him.
Jungkook - walks around alone at night, basically asking for trouble as he passes by a bunch of thugs without a care in the world. Seems to not care about anything (depression) and ends up being hit by a car at the end after being beaten by said thugs.

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. Yes, love I Need U. It's a fav. THE MV IS PART OF THEIR HIDDEN BU STORYLINE IN SOME OF THEIR SONGS. So it's a lot. But they won their 1st award after this song. This story is deep complex and heartbreaking. This MV depicts suicide, overdose, and the hardships of life. It shows that when they are together they are happy and have no worries. But each one is hiding baggage and are suffering alone. This song resonated with fans and this story is why BTS are the best. It came out in 2015. Suga was the one on the bed and burned the room. V killed his dad who was hurting his sis. So we got physical abuse. JK did not fight back because he wanted the pain. They were beating up JK because he bumped into them. He is in pain because of loss. Suga killed himself in the fire. Jimin is depressed and tried to kill himself by drowning in the tub. Hobi overdosed. RM is upset because he is alone and life sucks. Jin is really important in the story and not spoiling... =0p So BTS never sings about girls. Not really. In this case girl means friend. Oh yes JK did get hit by a car. Love the song its a banger. I discovered BTS before I Need U and certainly thought it was a song about love and heartbreak possibly with a girl. Until I came across this version and realizing just how deep the meaning of this song is. This was the beginning of the BU rabbit hole for me and the rest is history. I became an ARMY for life. They are true legends. The happiness, tears, pain, joy, sadness, hope, love…they give us all of it with all their love and hope. I Need U will always be my #1. Wait until you get to Fake Love if you plan on following the BU. 🤯

With BTS songs if you think it’s about a partner or girlfriend it’s always safe to assume that your wrong lol even songs that will flat out say “I need you girl” aren’t about girls and even fake love can be interpreted not as love with a partner but love within one’s self one of the many reasons I love them sm! Next I found it helpful to watch BU explanations as I don't have access to the books or the game. Watching the content in order with the explanations gave me a pretty good understanding.💜

I recommend you to watch the videos in the order that in another Army comments have already told you (mostly focuss on the visuals of the MV than the lyrics) .. in some point you would have to watch explanation videos... Don't worry, I didn't understand much at the beginning but later I was amazed of the storytelling of HYYH era (if I'm not wrong, the storyline goes through MV of Wings era too).

Yeeessss the BU! You were so confused at the beginning and I was confused that NOBODY had told you that I Need U is the beginning of the BU 😂. But you guys figured it out (my brain literally went *ding ding ding!* when you asked if it was the BU)! They do touch a lot on mental health in this series, and a lot of concepts have to do with the trials of growing into adulthood, and all the good and bad that comes with that transitional period. It’s really fun to piece together, but after consuming all the content myself, I went to smarter ARMYs who made videos explaining the story😅, so don’t feel too bad if you’re not understanding certain storylines as you go on. Anyway, this video was one of the first BTS MVs that I ever watched and it’s the one video that prompted me to look further into the boys, so it holds a special place in my heart. RM had said awhile back that in writing the lyrics, they added ‘girl’ to I need you to make the melody flow more, but it’s not really a girl they are talking about. Which is why the title of the song it just I need U. Each of the guys have their own story but Jin is at the center of it all (won’t give it all away of course) but with just the lyrics you would think that this is about a romantic love, but it’s way, way more as the BU evolved over time. But essentially I Need U is more about the pain of growing up. Adolescence to Adulthood.

Hmm if you want you can watch another "I need u" MV there is second one, like you said in this video is a lot things, a lot going on, most things aren't easy to talk and show, so it is 19+ video (it is on screen at the begining in corner- in theory this is your warning), there is MV that actually come out first, that is for all age groups, it come out bc they couldn't really put orginal on TV in Korea and all this kpop shows etc are on TV and can't put that typ of content freely, so first MV was lighter and shorter and more hopeful, you can watch it to see for yourself, it was week between them, when this version come it took all the attention, most people were like "🤯🥺😢😲😵😮" and nobody knew that there will be second version, so most people forget about first one bc second was so wow and heavy, but when you really want to get in BU I recommend to watch it, bc there are different cuts used for that video, it is not like shorter version of this but they used lot different scenes, so it is fun to see more of it.
I know there is a lot of fans that don't really go into BU. I actually really like it. When zi got into BTS I was sure to first take they work without focusing on BU, I watched MV that were part of BU as normal videos, when I was dobę with their content I go back and jump into BU, it was great for me to see this all look for things, connect and find out parts, and watch it for 5, 10 times from begining and always see something new bc I knew more bc new stuff later that come out. Yeah it waa really fun for me, but I also understand when people aren't really into it and don't go there or get like summary etc to get like whole picture, to have some knowlage.

I honestly was triggered the first time I saw this video, I knew the song already though. People love the BU, but I struggle with it, I think because it isn't really finished. I saw reactor say it still feel hopeless at this point and I think that explains it for me. With the boys taking their break and heading out to military for 2 years it kinda feels like they aren't going to finish it, and they have really moved past it in their careers and music, so just feels to me like it is going to be left at that hopeless feeling.
I kind of they had another MV for all their BU videos, sort of a video more in tune with the song. But, that is just me and I'm in the minority, lol.
