  • For almost as long as black folks have been in this country, the relationship between blackness and policing has been a hot racist mess.
    From 1619, until today here's how slavery in the US, shaped modern day policing, as we know it.

    I came across this video as part of a 21-day racial justice and social equity challenge through Dayton's (OH) YWCA. The parallels between the slave patrol and what I have read about policing today are disturbing. It seems that racially charged pieces of the history puzzle like this one have been intentionally blurred or kept behind some curtain, and I guess that the many dislikes for this highly informative video are a knee-jerk reaction to pulling that curtain back. Here's to understanding the past in the spirit of a more just and equitable present.

Most white people will sidestep, ignore, or outright lie about the horrors this country has perpetrated against people of color. The thing is slavery has always been prevelant in history from ancient Egypt to Greece to Rome, Aztecs and African kingdoms and tribes, used as a form of subjugation and free labour for agriculture and road building

    • @tonyetzu
      @tonyetzu 2 года назад

      The United States still uses slave labor. The 13th Amendment permitted the State to enslave people as a punishment, which hardly abolished slavery. State legislators created laws that, if violated, allowed States to re-enslave Black people. Post-Civil War "Black Codes" resulted in re-enslavement of the free Black population. Mississippi was the first to create Black Codes regulating things such as interactions with White people, and requiring free Black people to carry proof of employment or risk being re-enslaved. At least six Southern states modelled their Black Codes after Mississippi. Since the 1970s, increased criminal penalties have fuelled mass incarceration of the free Black population. America has a flourishing prison labor system and the world’s largest prison population at 2.3 million in 2020. Prison labor camps and convict-leasing programs make America the world leader in Slave labor. The 13th amendment, rather than abolish slavery, allowed the law makers to maintain slavery and the social order, which had been previously established by the system of slavery.

      What you refer to as ancient is actually not "ancient". Simply because there was a time, a long long time ago (perhaps 10,000 years back at least) where humans were more inherently good and did not have slavery; where people shared and no corruption existed; a time when greed did not exist; a time when humans were more spiritual; a time when absolute nakedness was accepted by society and there was no lust. Lots of statues of ancient humans depicted nakedness, which is a representation of the maximum freedom. There was a time when humans roamed naked and society accepted the nakedness! There was much more freedom back then than there is today! With the introduction of Abrahamic religions like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and to some extent the Vedic religion, freedom was destroyed in the ancient world and nudity became shameful. The society which accepts nudity is much more civilized than the society which shames it. The modern day humans are more barbaric. Slavery transformed to mass incarceration in the U.S.

    The first documented Slave patrol was in the Province of Carolina 1704. The New York Sheriff's Office was founded in 1626. This was just in the colonies, the history of policing goes well beyond the Americas.
    Its almost like she skipped the rest of history for literally every single nation ever.....correction....slavery in the United States was largely a huge trans-formative factor for what was originally called "Night-Watch". These have existed since society existed for literally ever, originally with men volunteering or armies/soldiers playing the role. Militias/Sheriffs in different towns existed in the colonies still serving the purpose of catching thieves, outlaws and etc. A wide variety of factors played into the creation of a formal police force in the United States. Industrialization, Urbanization, slavery, the western expansion and etc.

      If you look at the history of policing in the US and compare it to other countries you see massively different products. For example, in most developed nations, specifically looking at the EU, police forces receive around 2 or more years of training and it is treated as a college degree program. In the US, we only require a high school diploma and depending on the state no more than 20 weeks of training. The recruits for this profession specifically target those with low IQs as demonstrated by the court ruling where a police applicant was rejected for being too intelligent and it was decided by the court being too intelligent could be cause for non-hiring by law enforcement. It's almost like... everything in this video reflects a system built upon deputized slave patrols and not a fully professionally trained police force like most other nations.
      That's before you get into how the FBI has been warning of white supremacist infiltration into law enforcement for decades or the most public differences in how they police based on political preference like the assassination of Michael Reinoehl where 19 witnesses reported that law enforcement didn't declare themselves and immediately opened fire. Compare that to the Kenosha shooter who was greeted and excused by law enforcement despite shooting several people. The day is quickly coming when apologists like you will no longer be able to hide behind your "a few bad apples" to justify the systematic discrimination, right wing extremism, and white supremacy absolutely infesting US law enforcement back to its founding.

    • @MrfunnyNacho
      @MrfunnyNacho 3 года назад

      @@Russlem While yes, on paper in some countries/cities in their department training is often quoted to be "two years", in countries like UK these cops are out on the streets in less that 2, but are on a probationary period much like the officers in pretty much every state across the united states. In New York City, it's a total of a year and 7 months before the officer is considered out of "Probation" and a full fledged officer. This is pretty much what they mean by "2 years". Then tactics wise....no they do not appear to be more "Well trained". In fact I'm curious to see their Line of duty incident rate, as they're responding to assaults with weapons across their city...with probably no firearm. Which objectively can cause serious physical injury or death.
      The viral video of an entire platoon called to handle one man with a knife...is not "efficient", and multiple officers literally could of died in that video. Take a tactics course, learn how to use a firearm, learn what it takes to wrestle with someone. You'll come to realize how dangerous a knife or the threat of a weapon actually is.
      Read up on the actual details of Kyle Rittenhouse, and remove your "Blue lives matter = racist" lens. crossing state lines (30 minutes away from his home and was originally working in the area that day) with a firearm illegally does not remove your right to self defense. People are allowed to defend their property. His actions we're de-escalatory in nature and just because people think the riots are "just" doesn't mean people can't defend themselves.
      As far as the collusion with the government and it's attempt to discredit political movements, My instinct tells me there's sufficient enough motive to see that the government was and till this day upholds a strong stance against marxist/communist ideologies. I've read the reports, and they're inconclusive, but what it does entail if it is true, a zealous effort in discrediting the ideologies. Racism? maybe... or a mix of both, it was at the height of the civil rights era I'm not surprised the administration took this stance. But the oppressed (minorities) extremists will almost always lean towards an ideology like marxism.

The notion you believe US law enforcement is as well trained as foreign nations is not even one foot in reality. Per capita, US law enforcement kills more than 3 times of its own citizens than the next OECD country down. There are numerous other metrics to measure how bad US law enforcement are that are just as appalling, but you aren't interested in facts. Proof? You're defending Rittenhouse and calling the protests "riots". All I need to know to know that you're a racist piece of shit. > EU vs US general statement of the US is worse
      > Kenosha shooting
      > Civil rights Era racism in government.
      You've only now attempted to provide quantitive data. I'd advise against only using a kill rate for officers to capture the entire picture of the United States vs the rest of the world. Various data sets play into our violence in the US. Gun rights, multi-cultural infighting/differences, socioeconomic issues and etc. Europe doesn't have the same gang culture that we do, in fact at best they try to imitate it. Some countries only have to deal with knives, and blunt weapons and that changes the dynamics extremely, they also don't have to deal with the extreme amount of differences between people in our melting pot of a society, I'd argue Europe is extremely more homogenous than the US. Different views do cause conflict.
      As far as tactics go I train Jiu jitsu, licensed firearm holder, and experience in law enforcement. Until you've done all three and taken advanced lessons on them...please stfu. That's only because it's easy to say something behind a computer, and then having to actually do it in real life you understand the opposition of trying to implement progressive laws.

    The slave patrol was not the first form of organized policing in the south. There were Sheriffs, Constables, and Watchmen that helped enforce all kinds of laws in all the colonies including, and more important to the government, the collection of taxes. This systems of policing were modeled after European police forces that had been around since the late early 1600s. The slave patrols were a part of law enforcement in the south, but when slavery was abolished, there was no longer a need for them and they vanished. Slavery was terrible and we had to fight a war to end it. At the end of the war, the south was defeated, but they believed they were correct. There were all kinds of efforts to maintain their former system and a lot of terrible laws were passed and it was the job of law enforcement to enforce these racist laws. As we got rid of these laws, police no longer were obligated to enforce them. The police have a history of enforcing racist laws, but the police as an entity was not born out of racism or slave patrols even if slave patrols were a part of early efforts to create law and order. This is a false narrative being pushed to justify the hatred of police. Nobody likes the police until they need them.

    This is just wrong. America modeled it’s policing from England. The first places in America to have a police force was Boston and New York because they were population centers. Why on earth would you think police forces started out in rural areas? Policing actually took time to form in rural areas in the south and out west because all they had were horses. Rural people almost always had to deal with their problems on their own. Why do you think there was lynching? It’s because they had no police force and many lawyers. People took justice into their own hands and it got very ugly.
    Slave Patrols were private companies or they worked directly for the plantation owners. That’s just a private security firm or at times a neighborhood watch when they Lynched people.

If viewers can make any recommendations, I would change the title to something that reflects the video content and its learning objective, which is how the historic relationship between American slavery and law enforcement can help us understand today's police brutality and the BlackLivesMatter movement.

    Policing goes all the way back to the 9th century with the Romans. Policing systems such as ‘the Watch’ worked on a volunteer basis. Others were private policing for hire. The type of the police we know today was first formed in 1838 in the city of Boston, followed by New York City in 1845, Albany, NY and Chicago in 1851, New Orleans and Cincinnati in 1853, Philadelphia in 1855, and Newark, NJ and Baltimore in 1857. By the 1880s almost all major cities had this policing system. The Slave Patrol started 134 years before the modern police system started.
    It takes a quick Wikipedia search to know this.
