Hi this is a valuable video..... Can you make a video on Terms and conditions that chrome or Firefox seriously take into consideration before removing the extension from their ecosystem...
How hard is it to get initial traction ? I built a shopify app and couldn’t get initial downloads . Is it really saturated and challenging to get your first 100 downloads ? Also are users likely to pay ? For mobile apps sometimes the user base is expecting free. Would you say the chrome web store a lot of uses are expecting free ? Thanks for sharing the vid btw
Hi, I think it will be challenging to get downloads and paid users like a Shopify app (I think it's always challenging to get paid users, but that's me). However, I don't think it's saturated to the extent that web or mobile apps are. My last SaaS was a chrome extension of an existing saturated web app product that I was intrigued by. I was able to successfully charge $19 a month prior to acquisition and it was easier to sell people on it because there was a convenience factor tied into it (it saved them time compared to the web app version). I never got a chance to explore if a freemium model would have brought in more revenue in the long term. I suspect it might have but I don't know if it would have been worth it. Many of the extensions on the chrome store are either free with advertising or free with a pro upgrade. The chrome app that I'm building in my tutorial series will be free but I can absolutely see a "pro" version of it. If you're looking for ideas, I would search for successful mobile or web apps and research if it can be adapted into a browser extension that would be just as valuable. Good luck!
@@jerryhacks Hey jerry , thanks for the thoughtful response and detailed explanation. Also congrats on the exit ! Interesting to hear you charged $19 bucks per month. I often find that most companies offer a freemium model as oppose to charging a monthly fee right out of the gate. Interesting you state it isn’t as saturated , makes me contemplate building a Chrome extension . Maybe I will , hardest thing with building software is sometimes you can spend a month building something only to not earn anything or not earn much. Of course that’s apart of the game. I’ve built 4 mobile apps and those only made lunch money 😅. Makes me reluctant to spend my time building software , sometimes I wonder if I’d be better off just getting a part time job for supplemental income as opposed to trying to build a Saas.
Thank you and I agree with all of your points! I prefer building web apps because there's no expectation on how much you can charge and you get to own your own product versus it being on an app store. With my last few successful apps, I followed the steps listed in the "Mom Test" (which is largely just customer research and outreach prior to building a product).
@@jerryhacks Thanks for being generous and sharing your points . You’ve brought up a valid point regarding pricing models / value perception of web apps. I will read the mom test ; and see if I can make use of it . Thanks for the recommendation.
Hi, I enjoyed the video and all the information you are provining here, super useful! I am currentlly trying to develope a chorme extenstion startup, is it possible to consult with you?
Absolutely! I think the Honey extension works for any website. If you want to create a chrome extension that works on Shopify, you can create something similar to Honey and identify if a website is using Shopify or not. Last I checked, a way to determine if a website is using Shopify is by parsing the website and checking if a "Shopify.shop' element exists
hi, my cofounder are building a github copilot for lawyers at ETH - I have some questions about limitations of browser plugins - would you be open to a quick chat?
Otto, I'm a browser extension developer full-time and built the MVP for a 1-click checkout startup's extension. I'd love to share some professional advice if you're still looking into building an extension.
