      Because she doesn't have a ballerina body. It's not her skin color...she's muscular. Ballerinas are usually slender and dainty. There's plenty of Asian dancers who are slender not muscular. Misty is way more muscular than the typical ballerina. There's white women who don't have ballerina body types.

    I’m sitting here listening to this, I’ve been dancing since I was little but I stopped because of the discrimination I felt I was facing it was heartbreaking, it’s enough to make you cry realizing dance is often a culture of rich white families who could afford to send their kids to dance school, where I taught myself, I didn’t know anything and now I know so many things but unfortunately one of those things is the harsh reality that black dancers are put In the background they are never the main characters. Study the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey and so many other groundbreaking dancers. Misty Copeland is not now nor has she ever been the ONLY one. I find it odd that she rarely discusses other Black dancers or is seen in the company of others. That first and only persona is self deceiving and it’s like you can just never get past go. Falling back on that Obama trope just lands us at the feet of a creature like Trump. Wierd like that movie Groundhog Day... just repetitive. Freedom and Art are both so much bigger than a one off - even if it is a tour de force like Obama or Copeland. Well, imho You have not seen Stravinsky’ s Firebird until you see it done by the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Btw: I saw the swan in Swan Lake with DTH as well. Blackfacein the Bolshoi Ballet? I don’t really care. But hey: let them try that at Carnegie Hall! I’ll see you on the frontline there Miss Copeland because we are not winning our battles on social media. Can’t be done. There’s a wierd disconnect here. Can’t put my finger on it... but I’m keeping an open mind on the subject.

    • @buzabuba7326
      @buzabuba7326 2 года назад

      It comes down to industry, exposure, and scrutiny. AA and DTH never had a diversity problem because they were modern dance companies founded by great black dancers. And while they do explore standard ballet canon, that is not what they're known for and that is not their point of focus, artistically. Classical Ballet, on the other hand, certainly has a big diversity problem, and that is what MC is addressing here. And given her background and global level of exposure, no one is better suited for that. Her voice has leverage that no dancer at DTH or AA can match. You may not care about blackface at the Bolshoi, but others do. Ballet needs to move towards a future were companies have the diversity to call on their dancers of color to fill roles they are, quite frankly, entitled to.

    I think the conversation around casting choices vs ethnicities is worth having. How much of it is for aesthetic reasons vs just arbitrary? Why use blackface when you can use a real person of that ethnicity, etc.

    • @thegoogs
      @thegoogs 3 года назад

      Agreed. As a lifelong dancer, the casting decisions were so blatantly racist. I’ve been to maybe 600 castings in my career, and have only seen 3-4 Black dancers make it to the final rounds.

    • @Quach7

      Aesthetic reasons IS arbitrary by definition.
      Ballet is not a sport with a ball that you can count scores like ping pong.
      In my local ballet school, there's 1 guy to 49 girls. The girls have to cross-dress as guys to play guy parts. There are not enough non-white dancers to go around.

    come on how many more times can i hear the word divertissment, its over used. Look at the football teams in the uk theres no racisim within scouting there must be more black players now in the premier than white but so what if they are better at it than white so be it, Remember that there are a lot of restrictions in ethnic groups by thier own communities, its not always considered the correct route to go down, being a ballet dancer in a muslim, community yet look at someone
    like Carlos Acosta who was world class and adored in this country not because hes black but because he oozes talent. If youve got it and persist you will get there in the end.Women in ethnic communities are very often discouraged from entering this profession simply because of sexism in thier own communities and as for men its not seen as acceptable. Things are changing and audiences in this field are more than happy to see young talanted kids progress no matter what creed or colour. things have to change within thier own society too make a big change,

    Where do you people get these absurd assumptions about ballet from? So many people seem to think that the world of ballet is a racist, elitist county club for rich people with eating disorders. That is nonsense. Simply put, there has never been many black people in ballet - it isnt because anyone is attempting to keep black people out, it just doesnt seem to attract that many black people in the first place.
    Where did you get that nonsense from? Historically, some of the greatest ballet dancers in history came from the bottom of society. Regarding race, the world of ballet is NOT racist - no ballet company has a director or an administration that is racist, no professional ballet dancer would tolerate such a thing. Contrary to whqt some of you want to believe, no one is trying to prevent black ballet dancers from existing and/or succeeding. The reason that there has never been many black ballet dancers is because it's just not something that seems to attract many black peopple.

Race is the child of racism, not the other way around. However, as a fictional character and given the universality of that and other stories, the skin tone of whoever plays the character is irrelevant. On the other hands, I find hilarious that some americans (sorry, not generalizing here) are trying to impose their problems on other clutures/nations (thinking aobut the black face as a universal bad thing) while being so IGNORANT of other cultues themselves.

      I was just talking about this a month ago. Arts is so important and I feel like it’s not even emphasized in school. Not everyone wants to be in those science and medical fields! I wish arts was emphasized because I would love to become a classical pianist. I’m going to finish high school soon and all I can think about is being a pianist, but I feel it’s too late (since people usually start early) so I have to enter the other fields like everyone else. Art can get expensive for families too (like mine), so if they were in all schools and not just having drawing classes, imagine all the potential could release in kids who want to be in the arts but can’t afford it? Truly amazing ❤️

      @peachigo I think arts are so fundamental for kids to become well rounded individuals. It’s not always about being famous, and there are many career fields that needs creative people. But I think you should keep trying! Did you know that John Lennon didn’t learn how to play guitar until he was 18? He ended up being one of the most famous musicians of all time. Plus arts allow children to be expressive, and when being expressive they can contemplate life and have time for deep thinking.
