It’s a shame they never go into *why* the rules exist. In this case it’s because the pesticide they talked about was found to also kill off the bee population. Without bees, whole swaths of agriculture become unviable. The rule may have been punishing to Clarkson in this case, but it’s there to protect all farms and farmers from a much biggest cost than a single failed field.

@@imeverywhere9633 Sure, Clarkson doesn't know anything about farming, which results in a lot of mistakes and bad decisions that have a big impact. He also loves to blame regulations for things he did wrong.
About the fertilizer near hay. Hay can ignite due to anaerobic bacteria. 2 You do not want to recreate the explosion of Beirut harbor in rural England by igniting several tons of explosives (That happens to be fertilizer as well). Some rules look bureaucratic and stupid but exist for a reason
I can relate to Charlie. Charlie peaked in Season 2 when the council tried to illegally screw them over and it was the first time you see him get angry. "NO, THEY CANT DO THAT"
Fertilizer was the favourite bomb making ingredient for the IRA, ANFO, Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil( Diesel) and he´s not worried out it, admittedly is is hard to use or ignite without an explosive booster but the docks blast in Beirut was caused by fertilizer exploding! Not to be underestimated. Great seies though.
It takes at least half a stick of dynamite minimum to get it to go but preferably 2 sticks I think. My uncle was in mining in another state then got an explosives license later. The thing is, hay CAN EASILY spontaneous combust particularly if it hasn't completely dried yet. And you wouldn't want to be burning chemical fertiliser. Probably a bit toxic.
A note on the hay bales with the fertilizer, hat bales will definitely catch fire on their own, especially if they are stored in a damp location or are damp when they are bailed.
When I first heard about it I thought "No way." I thought "Well they will catch fire if you leave them out and some daft idiot is smoking around them." Then it turns out "No, this is a more serious fire hazard in damp conditions because mold, it's actually safer to smoke around gasoline barrels because the gasoline is safely stored within a metal barrel. The hay isn't!"
This is a great compilation, but its missing my favourite, the one where Charlie tells Clarkson about the issue with the farm shop's gate. That said, thanks for the upload, its a great show!

Most agricultural fertilizer contains high amounts of ammonium nitrate - AKA the stuff that caused the 2020 Beirut port explosion. So the EU are strict as fuck when it comes to storing it. If stored near hay, which releases gas as it decomposes, it can literally spontaneously combust if that gas mixes with it.
I suspect it's the other way around. Don't store it near combusrable materials since fertilizer fires are extremely dangerous. Couple years back you had the Beirut harbor explosion as an example of it.
