Hi Daniel, I just wanted to let you know that I started growing vegetables in my back garden in 2019 because of your videos. It was a small experiment, but I loved it, and in 2020 I expanded the operation with a bunch of raised beds and a whole lot of pandemic free-time, and now this year I have my back garden full of vegetables and an allotment of land in my uncle's big overgrown back garden in the countryside which I cleaned up and dug potato drills in. This month I'll add a few more beds and then I'm even planning to build a poly tunnel after your video. You inspired all of this! Thank you for sharing your journey. It's truly a privilege to watch.
I would love to see a video where you discuss how farming affects your health: both positively (exercising, eating healthy) and negatively (tiredness, injuries). Maybe tell us what you have to be mindful of?
My Daddy always had a “hot bed” It was a huge raised bed, made with rail road ties, full of seasoned manure. It was closed in with clear plastic frame. Late February early March he would plant. Daddy was a Trustee and also had a full time job as a boiler operator, yet we had our little farm. He butchered one pig and one young steer every year. His garden was huge. Simply a masterpiece. We had apple trees and berries. Mother would can for the year. My pony was blonde. Her name was princess. Tire swings, tree houses, home written plays, variety shows with a flash light when the electric went out. Sorry...I’m rambling 🥲
@@trishkuhne550 that's cool, in our country, I know trustees are those prisoners who can freely go in and out of prison to buy some things for the guards.

Well done Daniel! You are living the dream! I wonder if you will ever leave your plants to go back to work on your cottage? Not that you need to, you seem to live very comfortably! Your videos always make me smile and give me ideas! Stay well!
I haven't stopped working on the cottage. The plan is to finish the granary restoration this year, so I can move everything out of the cottage in to the granary (which will become a workshop). At that point work on the cottage will really kick into gear. As I've said many times though, I'm not rushing to finish the cottage. It takes as long as it takes, but it will get finished. :)

Hi! Tip for growing food to harvest in the lean months early in the year (avoiding the hungry gap): sow colliflower, fennel, lettuce in august, plant out in the polytunnel in september or October. Harvest in April/May. And the plus here: no pests like slugs and caterpilars because theyn aren’t there yet.

I'd second that. Fermented produce takes on an enhanced taste dimension as well. Jerusalem artichokes and green tomatoes are two that i would thoroughly recommend. They make delicious condiments and are very easy to prepare.
9:35 Finally the human gives me my just due, with this heated litter box. Boy that cat must have been ticked when he showed up later and found it covered with potted plants.
I sprouted lettuce and celery in my window sill this winter. In three months i should have enough for a salad.... but still im excited because they are the first food i ever grew.
My tips .. sow more than one seed of beetroot yes in a bigger module. They provide each other with early shade and humidity to get going. Given enough space they grow the same size. As does monty Don. One seed is usually actually cluster of two or more seeds as u may know but others won’t. So two is four which is perfect. Also I never try beans or cucs before May with no heat mat and I’m south coast U.K. And lastly your local outdoor market in U.K. is brilliant for cheap seedlings. No window cill dramas!!
Brilliant Daniel! Love the electric blanket idea as I have a small polytunnel but have to try bring my seeds on in the house. Just ordered an electric blanket
Great video, thanks Daniel. Good point about being alert to frost. I live in north east Scotland at 57 degrees and have to be very careful about tracking frost. The last frost date here is around the middle of May.

Daniel, you are a true inspirational person. You motivate me to keep going with my urban garden in Cork. Would love to pay you a visit, as I am literally just down the road from you.
Wonderful as ever, my friend. After a forty year layoff I have finally this year began planting for food again :). I am experimenting to see what I can grow successfully indoors on windowsills so I have improvised pots from old water bottles and produce containers. I have got lettuce, salad greens, spinach, tarragon, chives and parsley on the go in one room and a rank of carrots and parsnips in another. I shall look forward to seeing what you share with us as we go forward into the year.
When the frost is promised get some terracotta pots or metalik bucket and before you go to bed put into them some big candles and light them,it will keep temperature above freezing and protect the plants..we do it every spring, it works perfectly 👌
Ah, etiolation! That's what happened to my poor little seedlings! I tried starting 3 trays of seeds with one lamp, and it was just not enough... You've taught me a new word, and also diagnosed the problem, so I can do better next time!
I also tended to accidentally over-water - used those little peat pellet starters, but when they got dry on top, and I watered at the bottom, then they turned sodden like soaked sponges. I've got to learn to measure properly. I love your watering station where you can see the volume of water, before you set a tray in it. So much to learn! Thanks for sharing so much!
And, quick question - do you ever grow from food (not garden seeds) bought at the grocery store? I had some success sowing dried peas, sweet potato slips (cut off and saved while I ate the rest), and leeks (I saved the lower half of the bulb and regrew it in water, then soil). And once I germinated seeds scooped out from a spaghetti squash, and from a butternut squash. The squash died, sadly, but it might have been my lack of skill.
@@lrigdrenlrigdren2147 Often plants that have a lot of seeds (like squash) do so in part because not all the seeds are able to grow successfully. It could have been your lack of skill but it could also just have been a bad seed. Keep trying!
