  • A must see for anyone interested in classic trucks, plant or civil engineering construction.
Showing from conception of four berths to the extension of the original contract to fifteen births, through to the finished project.
Quarrying rock 30 km away over desert roads, then by railway wagons onto the giant breakwater to be placed on the seabed by a Manitowoc crawler crane.
The construction of 28,000 concrete 'stabits' on an industrial scale, as well as pile driving for the quays.
Editing has been kept to a minimum whilst still trying to retaining the narration, sorry for the jumpy bits.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for sharing this video. I believe my late father may have worked on this project or others in Dubai around this time. My mother, brother and myself also joined him and lived in Dubai for a year in 1972. I have been looking for anyone who may have worked with him, a needle in a haystack I know. His name was Samuel Leslie Fletcher from the UK. He worked for Costain and I believe his boss was called Ahmed. Could it be the same Ahmed who is in this film?! Who knows! We lived on a compound for Costain's overseas workers. I have very fond memories of our "Houseboy" called Apu who, though I did know at the time, became greatly influential in my later life. I was 4 years old at the time and remember my year in Dubai with the greatest of affection. Much gratitude to you it was fascinating to watch!

Even Port Rashid has been replaced as the main port by Jebel Ali now.

Such a shame that Foden did not capitalise on the reliability of their trucks and sell all over the UAE. Even the Abu Dhabi Foden agents (Al Jaber) ran hundreds of Mercedes and Kenworths for their construction subsidiary , but not Fodens.
