That Messenger turned out really nice! Can't believe the difference on the heat sink. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the "splatter box" rep is people blindly looking at a mono band amp, comparing it to a multi band ham amp and thinking they don't have filters how can they be clean. Besides that, over driving could always be a thing as well.
One of my best friends in CB Radio used the handle The Louisiana Cajun. He had a Realistic Navajo 23 channel base radio with no sideband that was a splatter box but that old radio was a beast on watts and modulation. He had no amp hooked up to it and was running the radio on a star duster ground plane. He enjoyed many years using that radio. He also enjoyed monitoring channel 19 and 9 to help someone in need. RIP Cajun you may be gone but you will never be forgotten. He was a legend!
I have one of those messengers, got it about 2 yrs ago from woodchuck in Tennessee has been one of best amps to date, would like to send it to ya one of these days and let you go thru it and do your upgrades you think it needs.
With that Roadrunner the only thing I would do to it is fix input tune. The rest is built nice . The splatter box they talking about maybe how the radio is tuned or that class C Amp is used on SSB. Also the receiver of near buy radio may have poor filters . That anderson powerpole may work but should use a SB50 connector in that amp. That M300 came out nice . That would need a SB 175 amp disconnect if putting one on it. Also some voltage drop on that 2 pill can make it splatter and run hotter. With any box you need good clean power to it. and a proper tuned radio to drive it. 73
I'm a HAM but I was and still a CB'er, back in the 60's my CB could be heard across the street on a steam iron. I'm an experimenter so I'm sure I splat a lot and don't give a rat's ass. I build antennas and a few times radio's and am a former Navy ET. Run the hell out of your radios and amp, no diff than a race car, but listen to your neighbor if he complains. @BoxBuilderIdaho I love the contrast, just joking around. Eagerly awaiting a part 2 of the other thing. I can't imagine who you might be building that for but can think of some prime suspects, then again I mix a lot of things up.
I never comment in order to stay out of the pissing contest. But I have seen it for years and years. The 1000 watt scale, each Mark is 20 watts. You have been doing 60 watts for years and years and years!!!
amplifiers are garbage in = garbage out, maybe his radios is a splatter box. at one point an "rci" product with bad ceramic disc cap was goin on a tangent putting out VHF band signals, after 10 seconds of key time and got worse as it went.
