Sukayu (酸ヶ湯) at 890m above sea level is known as the snowiest place in Japan that is accessible by car in winter.
It holds the record of the highest snow depth 566cm in 2013 ever recorded by JMA(Japan Meteorological Agency) weather station. and its annual accumulated snowfall exceeds 20m in a certain year. (recently 1996, 1999 and 2006)

You finally made it to the hot springs & suddenly, it's ooyuki (heavy snow) time! It was coming down!
I did read that this part of Japan gets lots of snow in the winter months so this isn't a shocker.
