Most likely Dhulkarnejn was the great ancestor of Turks, known as Oghuz Kagan or Bilge Kagan, a title interchangeably used for him, who conquered east and west and north to south. His story was recorded on the Gòkturk (Orkhon) inscription stones, erected in modern day Mongolia, namely the historic birthplace of the Turks. He was not a pagan as were Alexander, Darius or Cyrus the greats, but a monotheist, which regarded Kök-Tengri as the single one and the only omnipotent creater of the world. His campaigns and conquests were written on the monuments, which are absolutely parallel with the narrative of the Holy Quran, that gives the story of Dhulkarnein at the end of the Surah al Qaf. As Zhulkarnein made his voyages and campaigns east and west, the inscription in the Orkhon Valley also mentions that Oghuz Khagan made his voyages to west and east and led the peoples where he met with the help and will of Kòk-Tengri, namely to the God Turks called. Furthermore in oral history and cultures of the Asian peoples, Dhulkarnein was known as the prophet sent to the Turks by Allah. Of course, Allah c.c. knows the best and He has the secret and sacred knowledge which we never comprehend with our simple minds...

There are many opinions. Perhaps he could have been an ancient African ruler or middle Eastern or a Eurasian leader. The most important thing is to get the lessons from the story.

It's funny how the aws and khasraj know who dhul quranain is but scholars and preachers today have no clue. All I want to say is dhul qurnayn is mentioned in the Qur'an as the man who wanted to know how Allah revives the earth after he causes it to die and then he died and was resurrected he became a king in Yemen called dhul qurnayn the man of two ages.hr was the grandfather of the aws and kasraj tribes that's why they asked him these questions. his army was called tubba also mention in the Qur'an. His army was a group of young men that Allah caused them all to die then he said to them to be resurrected. I can tell you exactly who yajuj and majuj are and where they are found. The companions spoke about dhul quranain and confirmed he was himyarite
