Every time Matt has a 15-30 year old, super low mileage car I can expect it to be condemned. To me, it means the thing has just been sitting around, not being driven and vehicles seem to not enjoy not being driven. And it usually means it’s not had enough oil/filter/plug changes because a layman looks at mileage not age. Sadly it seems this little Kia conforms to that assumption. Sad really; I like the colour and I’ve never hated the Picanto’s looks and this kind of cheap car for new or downsizing drivers are dying out.
In this case if the mileage was higher it would probably have been scrapped years ago with all the rain and winter salt battering the underside. This car had had welding in the past so it did well to last this long.
That's calling out for a cheap long journey challenge video. It's averaged 500 miles a year for its whole life... would be interesting to see if it could do a years mileage in a day!

A few repairs along the way, only broke down once (new points fitted at the roadside). Next MOT screwdriver went through lots of the bodywork and subframes so it was goodbye.

Once I had a boss. He drove the exact yearmodel. It was rotten as hell. When we subjects convinced him to get new var, it had 265.000 km on the clock. Great little engines.
Howdy Matt!! I always have to laugh when you say that you're sad because you know obscure facts about cars. Actually, you should be proud. Being a fair bit older than you, I was like that in my youth. I use to hang out on all the local car dealers collecting all the info on the new cars. Be proud of your wisdom & knowledge. Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤪🤪
I love that colour names stick in your mind! 😂 I thought it was just me. It started with Colorado beige for me (76 Chevette!) my newer car colour database isn't as impressive as yours, I'm 56 - but 70's & 80's cars, there's a fair bit of pointless paint name knowledge in my mind!
It’s a bit grubby but I reckon it has potential. A machine polish and a good clean on the inside, some new wheel trims would transform it I reckon. Shame about the headlining.
Mat, that's the perfect car to fix the most serious issues then drive it to Spain in the summer and see if you can make a profit there, or maybe get your return air fare out of it!
Random thought about what you can tell about the age of previous owners from the radio pre set. Some of the early punk rockers are now in their mid 60s - some even older. John Lydon is 68!
The question I've always wondered is.. you buy these cars cheap from the dealerships £400, £500 runarounds with short Mots etc .. but could us as the general public also pick them up for this price or is it because you're in the trade and buy in bulk?
Love it, cheers! What causes a sagging head lining? I like the way you have a genuine interest to save old cars and see them running again, I think you're right with this one cheers.
I watch various youtube channels with people who collect and fix up very ordinary cars, something like this would be a easy fix for them compared to some cars they work on. Parts are pretty inexpensive as well.
Hello, Matt. Remember me in your will. 😂 Is it me or do 20 year old cars not look like 20 year old cars, I just think old shapes don’t look old like in comparison an 80s car did compared to a 90s car. Great video.
A 20 year old car has got to be a modern classic you'd have thought? 🤔 So instead of doing the right thing for the car by keeping up with the maintenance, the previous owner(s) decided to not spend any money on it & drive it into the ground instead!👎 😤😤 Thats good of them!👍😁😝
It's a shame really. I bought a metallic blue Peugeot 304 in far worse condition than that in 1979. I just took my time and got all my spares from scrapyards for next to nothing and built it into quite a nice car. Thing is I paid £500 for it back then, and I only overpaid a bit. Times have changed.
Me , pull up look over to car "scrap it , I'm not even looking at that it's not worth the aggro " Matt , pulls up " bit ropey but may be worth it if I spend a bit on it , I'll take it for wash even though the current MOT suggests it's a nail" I love the optimism
Matt, I assume that the scrap value plus video content value made this purchase worthwhile, or else you’d have done the carvertical check prior to purchase and the mot list would have made you decline? How about turning it into an off road demolition racer and starting up another channel. All the bad stuff you buy through the year gets stripped down to engine, gearbox, drivers seat and steering wheel and you have a high peak demolition Derby at the end of the year, or in May, May’s the best month. Nice one Matt.
I appreciate you have to take this sort of car as part of the deal ( Job Lot ) I am no car dealer but I would not be dealing with twenty year old cars. Great Video as always.
i'm from the continent, as you say. if i see a picanto like this, for this money.... i buy 4 new tires, 4 new brake disk and pads and if im correct a whisbone ( or similar). cost me around 700 euros. easy sell for 3000 or 3500 euros. With that milage it like Christmas..... But in every country its different, with cost and market movements.
The one time a carvertical check costs more than the car is worth.

Same is true of life in general but isn’t it about the journey?
Those MoT advisories! You know what happened: Previous owner thought as it only did 2k miles a year it didn't need any maintenance.
Those little Picanto's are a hoot - my daughter had so much fun in hers that it did not last long !
Ideal for a new young driver.
Once I had a boss. He drove the exact yearmodel. It was rotten as hell. When we subjects convinced him to get new var, it had 265.000 km on the clock. Great little engines.
When you were reading through the never ending list of advisory items I immediately thought this tiny car is condemned to go to the scrapyard...
I remember Car magazine describing the front styling as "cats bottom grille"
Howdy Matt!! I always have to laugh when you say that you're sad because you know obscure facts about cars. Actually, you should be proud. Being a fair bit older than you, I was like that in my youth. I use to hang out on all the local car dealers collecting all the info on the new cars. Be proud of your wisdom & knowledge. Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤪🤪
Haha I wish I knew other more interesting facts rather than paint codes
I love that colour names stick in your mind! 😂 I thought it was just me.
It started with Colorado beige for me (76 Chevette!) my newer car colour database isn't as impressive as yours, I'm 56 - but 70's & 80's cars, there's a fair bit of pointless paint name knowledge in my mind!
Love it!!
15.30....reminded me of C U Jimmy, character done by Russ Abbot many moons ago!!
This car looks better than it is mechanically.
Unfortunately Matt, it is beyond rescuing, you can’t save them all, top marks for optimism though❤.
Rusty wiper arms are always a pet hate of mine.
Typical Kia.
Between the beginning and the end Matt went from 35 years old to 17 years old! What a trick!
Rear discs? Fair enough on such a high performance vehicle
I'd love to see you buy a Nissan Cube, always wanted one and be interested to hear your thoughts on one :D
Love it, cheers! What causes a sagging head lining? I like the way you have a genuine interest to save old cars and see them running again, I think you're right with this one cheers.
Hi Matt i just bought an slightly crashed damaged but hpi clear 2000 Honda Accord Auto with only 59k miles! I cannot believe how low mileage it is
Looks like the Wonder Grip van has moved!
I just hope Matt is okay... The Man flu is a killer. Feel better soon Matt.
My first and current car
I love it ❤
No
Problems whatsoever
I watch various youtube channels with people who collect and fix up very ordinary cars, something like this would be a easy fix for them compared to some cars they work on. Parts are pretty inexpensive as well.
Perfect car for a young home mechanic to fix as a daily driver
Hello, Matt. Remember me in your will. 😂 Is it me or do 20 year old cars not look like 20 year old cars, I just think old shapes don’t look old like in comparison an 80s car did compared to a 90s car. Great video.
Hiya Matt shame about the Picanto but you do look about 10 years younger after your shave. Loving your work 👍
Haha thanks. 34 to 24 in 5 seconds :)
I disagree. You look better with the beard. And, sorry, but you kind of look older without it
A 20 year old car has got to be a modern classic you'd have thought? 🤔 So instead of doing the right thing for the car by keeping up with the maintenance, the previous owner(s) decided to not spend any money on it & drive it into the ground instead!👎 😤😤 Thats good of them!👍😁😝
In Portugal it was available with a 1.1 3 cylinders diesel and also an LPG version
I just wonder one thing. Do you ever do OBD tests on the vehicles you purchase? We haven't seen any, it would be cool.
Hi Matt new wiper blades with rusty arms . What a shame with such low mileage . Pity we don,t see the MOT checks
Me , pull up look over to car "scrap it , I'm not even looking at that it's not worth the aggro "
Matt , pulls up " bit ropey but may be worth it if I spend a bit on it , I'll take it for wash even though the current MOT suggests it's a nail"
I love the optimism
If only other garages thought the same way ,regarding the parts
There are plenty of 20+ year old cars that are cheaper and easier to work on than anything produced in the past 5 years.
Banger economics is great.
i'm from the continent, as you say. if i see a picanto like this, for this money.... i buy 4 new tires, 4 new brake disk and pads and if im correct a whisbone ( or similar). cost me around 700 euros. easy sell for 3000 or 3500 euros.
With that milage it like Christmas.....
But in every country its different, with cost and market movements.
I like that Matt still acknowledges the social media platform ‘X’ by its original name Twitter! 😂
I never was a big fan of it
It will always be twitter x sounds like some specialist porn site 😂😂
I've had two, brilliant little cars
