Case in point, I am Dominican ( a Spanish speaking country located on a small island in the Caribbean) 47, and was 13 when Sweet Freedom was released, loving it instantly, to this day. I however, had not heard "I keep forgetting", being that it was released when I was 9, and probably not much aware. With MTV being my main access point to American music, of course, when Warren G and Nate Dogg's "Regulate" came out in 94, I was very much into Hip-Hop, as were most people my age to some extent. My best friend, who is a DJ born in NY and that came to live here in 89, told me right away it was a Michael Mc Donald sample, when I heard the original, I was even more blown away. From afar, all those musical differences between genres you guys have internally become blurry, and this "blurriness" is much better, in my opinion, since I view American music as a continuous story still unfolding, starting from fiddle players in the 13 original colonies, and the Vaudeville scene, onto Blues, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Disco, Punk, Hip-Hop, etc, with every sub-genre playing its role. Music is there to unite:)
