On July 8, 2022 on our way to Silverton and the Hardrock 100, my girlfriend Hilary (@HilaryAnn) I came across a couple of creatures crossing the highway just outside of Colorado. Turns out they were a couple of stray dogs, one much younger than the other but both dirty, malnourished and hungry. One of them, a heeler/terrier mix, ended up becoming the newest addition to the family.
Meet Charlie (Salami).
A sweet and loving 6-month old furball who we ended up adopting into the family permanently. It's been an interesting ride to say the least, as he'd completely derailed our Colorado summer plans and beyond...but we feel extremely lucky and fortunate to have found him.

Me too😩😩😩 . Hope it wasn't a mum and son combo. They were obviously together. I hope it found someone as kind as Billy🙏🙏
It was an incredibly difficult decision. We tried very hard to save the other dog as well…we spent about four hours there trying to gain her trust, but she was that much older and wilder, and it was just impossible without some professional help (and we did try to find a shelter that would come help us, but we were hours out of cell coverage and none of the local shelters had any space or ability to travel to come help us catch her). At the end of the day, we could have left Charlie there simply to keep them together, but I don’t believe he would have made it very far. He was small and running all over the road when we found him. There are apparently several hundred thousand wild dogs who live off of the land in desert areas like that, and most of them don’t live past a couple years old because they get hit by a car or eaten by a predator. As hard as it was to take Charlie without his friend, I do believe that giving one of those dogs a good life full of love - especially when Charlie is clearly a dog that thrives off of affection and companionship and wasn’t suited to an isolated life of scavenging - is better than leaving both of them to that fate. 💔

As I understood, they tried several hours to get her but unfortunately didn't succeed due to the dogs anxiety 😥😥
